On most games I play normal, but for Fallout 3,I started on Very Easy. It's not that it was hard;its just that for me to soak everything in,it had to be incredibly easy.

I find that the first time through a game, when you have to move on instinct, react without pre-planning, is when I do the best. Then, I settle into the planning phase and work through it slowly. Have to start on the hardest difficulty setting to achieve the best adrenaline focus.

I start on normal or hard, but when I feel like killing stuff, I choose easy. I start on Expert for any Guitar Hero/Rock Band game.

Normal difficulty should be designed for the average gamer, i.e me. And therefore if i find it far too easy or far too hard then the designers have failed. Unless ofcourse its not aimed at the average gamer like ninja gaiden and then it can slaughter me all it likes on normal and i wont complain.

Depends on the game, I played Mass Effect on the easiest setting there was simply because I just didn't care about the combat. Gears Of War I played on the highest difficulty level, Mirror's Edge I played on normal but then went on to Hard, Empire Total War I played the campaign on normal and the battles on very hard.

Basically if I play a game to be challenged (mostly FPS, RTS) I set it on the highest difficulty level. If I play a game to just have same laid back fun (mostly RPG) I put it on easy :) Varies though.

En général, I tend to start off with the default out-of-the-box Normal difficulty, and if the game's insultingly easy I'll crank it up to Hard or Very Hard or whatever.

When I first play, I'll play easy.
Then I'll gradually get harder.

BWAHAHAHA, sexual innuendo.
God, I need sleep.

i'd rather not be given the option, the most enjoyable games i've played have essentially confirmed this. they should just decide for themselves what sort of difficulty to make the game, and then if you beat it, do like a 'hero mode' or some bollocks thats only played by people who want to have RSI. but if i had to choose:

as i couldn't give a fuck how good i am at a game, i'll choose easy if there are 3 options, and the second easiest if there are 4 or 5 options. more than 5 options is idiocy.

i'm good enough for normal in most games, however i would struggle and get frustrated much more than is really necessary for that feeling of accomplishment.

if you're good enough to flow through a game on hard then good luck to you, but i'm not, and i'm not exactly desperate to be. i'm not going to buy a game so i can get stuck on it every 15 minutes. i'm going to buy a game so i ENJOY that game.

in the end, i don't see the point, because it's not (and it never should be, or else the game is doing something horribly wrong) the difficulty that makes a good game satisfying, it's the game itself. probably why all the old school games were so hard...

I choose normal, because difficulty in games is like hot sauce at different restaurants.

Some have 'hot' flavor you can barely taste, while other restaurants serve 'mild' which will put blisters on your tongue.
