It's too marred by it's adherence to tradition over innovation. Tomb Raider II was a vastly superior game to Tomb Raider I, and while the influence of the female heroine came from the first one, that isn't enough to justify putting it on the list instead of or above Tomb Raider II.
I agree completely. I don't know why they have GTA3 instead of GTA:SA or Vice City. SA and Vice City both had better graphics, more to do, and tighter story lines. GTA3 was more influencial arguably but not quantifiable better in anyway.

Good and Bad. It has Ico, BGE and Adventure (long live Advent!!!). But wait - final Fantasy III beats VII? VII is not in the top 3? No worms? Myst? Twilight Princess BEAT R&C? Only one R&C? ONLY ONE?!?!?!? Fuck you, pointless list with spelling errors and Nintendo Bribery.

*checks what Final Fantasies are on there*

3, 7, 10, Tactics, 2, 12.
This list sucks.
I think they might be using the American numbering system for the Final Fantasy games, because there is no way in hell anyone would put in 2 and 3 and leave out 4 and 6.
They did. Look at the year and system after the game. FF 3 is listed as 1994 on the SNES, so it's actually FF 6.
Oh good, because 12 kicks the SHIT out of 2.

Assassin's Creed - the video game equivalent of Sominex - beat out 57 other games... including Infamous, Thief, BG&E and Chronicles of Riddick... not a chance.

And Silent Hill 2 not being in the top 25 is an insult.

Any ordered listing of "best games" is going to be subjective and controversial - i.e. BS.

By the way, did they mention how they defined "best"? That's an important part of the methodology there, and different on an individual basis. Most people, for instance, don't consider how definitively the game shaped the industry. And if it's based on a poll, then sheer popularity wins out over any other "good" qualities.

1 -- The Legend of Zelda (NES, 1987)

There is absolutely no reason that should be number one.

Worst. List. Ever.

Ha, they've got some good games in there, but they're not organised properly.

Don't even get me started on the fact that Mafia is nowhere in sight.

Ok I have only played 120 of them so i don't know how much my opinion counts but Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2 on the list ALREADY? True, MW2 did allegedly set a record for first day sales but isn't it too soom to be adding it to this type of list? Now if you were making a list of top 200 gaming milestones perhaps you could have it on as a means to justify the mediun into mainstream

Bioshock above system shock 2? Oblivion above morrowind? Modern warfware above CoD and CoD2, LoZ:OoT and MGS below WoW? I can certainly say this is far removed from my ideal list and I've not even read it through all yet..

Here's what I don't understand: I didn't play those old ass games at the top of the list when I was a kid, and I don't play them now. I went on my 360 and played MW2: amazing graphics, furious gameplay, and ultimatly an example of how far gaming has come. Then I went and played a game of Tetris online. Didn't compare. Are these critics just a nostalgic bunch or what?
Come back in 20 years time and if MW2 is still one of the most played games in the world, you'll be more than welcome to compare it to the likes of tetris. However, I can already tell you it won't.
Because a sequel can never be better than original. Ever. Ever ever ever ever ever. It's the rules. I don't care how good your game is, it's not possible. Ever.

Here's how to tell if an old game really deserves a top spot or not: give it to a really hardcore gamer who's never played it. And guess what? 98% of the time they'll hate it. For example, a few years ago I tried the original Legend of Zelda for the first time. It did not strike me as being "teh best game evar!1"

Also, I don't see any KOTOR.

These types of lists always come up under fire from people who disagree!

I personally don't think Mario Galaxy derserves to be there in any shape or form. But that's just me, people will disagree with these types of things, I just ignore them usually.

I agree with most of the list. To clear up confusion about GTA III being that high and higher than other GTA's, they didn't put it there because of how good it was. GI knows later GTA's were better, but GTA III is what created the sandbox genre. Ever since that game came out there have been multitudes of games using the same formula. Without GTA III there would be no GTA: Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV, Saints Row, or any other big sandbox games.

Only 4 current-gen games in the top 50, including the practically unplayable Oblivion? Disgraceful.
