As difficult as Devil May Cry 3 was, it wasn't as blisteringly difficult as a number of people make it out to be. For me, the game that gave me the greatest sense of accomplishment was Ninja Gaiden (Xbox). It may not have been ridiculously difficult either, but its difficulty was just high enough (and its frustration was just low enough) to give me a feeling of accomplishment when I completed.

My best feelings of accomplishment usually come from puzzles. There was one puzzle in Myst: Uru (the online one) where a group of us had reached this enormous puzzle with an altar filled with symbols, and our leader (who had done most of the puzzles so far) couldn't figure it out. I finally noticed a mathematical pattern, tried a few button presses, and managed to get it.

Also, this quest in Oblivion from a mod, called Ruined-Tail's Tale. Your partner leaves, with only some vague hints about where he went. I felt pretty good when I finally traced all the clues and figured out where he was. (and for those who don't know, the map of possibilities in Oblivion is HUUUGE)

After beating any boss in Legend of Dragoon. That is a long ass game. Four PS1 discs. I've had it since 2002. I still havent completed the whole thing. Mostly because I was stuck on the Grand Jewel for 3 years. Yes, three years. I'd pick it up, try a few times, get my ass beat, then give up for months. Rinse, lather, repeat. Until i realized he only does magic attacks, and one of my characters in the party had insane magic defense. Took me three years to realize that. But when i saw that sunuvabitch die i felt like God. That was the moment i felt most accomplished as a result of a game.

Beating RTW on Very hard as one of the Roman factions felt great. As did beating Legendary on every level of difficulty and every level in Halo. (That felt good, especially finally grinding through Truth and Reconciliation.)

I grew up with Monkey Island 1&2 on our home's computer. They were installed before I was born, and were some of the first games I ever played. I started my first save file on both games in '95, and finally got around to finishing them in around '04. I was so proud of myself :)

Beating the secret boss in Kingdom Herts 2 Final Mix+. Terra, or more commonly know as ES (Enigmatic Soldier) is The most challenging fight ever. All of his attacks, on critical mode, and combos will kill you if you don't have the second chance and once more abilities. Truly felt accomplished when I finally dealt the finishing blow to him after about 20 losses.

I've felt a sense of accomplishment during and near the end of games, only to finish and realize that nothing has been gained in my life. In the end, beating games tends to leave me feeling, over-all, a sense of loss for all the time wasted.

Those were amazing games, The end of Monkey Island 2 kind of left me feeling like "wtf?"

I also remember that in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero... finally beating Fujin after years of not playing it and finally going back to it... I think that probably felt better than beating DMC3

When I finish bad games, I don't care. When I finish a lot of good games, I'm annoyed that I beat them so quickly. When a finish one of those mind-poopingly difficult games that are still incredibly fun I get a sense of accomplishment. Those games would have of course been Braid with the secret stars (I had to redo the whole game because of one of them) and the second level of I Wanna Be the Guy, which I suppose isn't actually finishing it. I one day hope to get past the third.
