Hello!

Just wanted to know whether I'm actually WEIRD or not, as all but one of my gaming friends do not choose the option to invert their Y-axis when playing games (typically shooter-type games). For me, pointing the stick forward means looking/aiming downwards, and pulling back on it means looking/aiming upwards. There is no other way I can play! Perhaps it comes from using a joystick from an early age and playing lots of flying games? I don't know, anyway I thought this would be the best forum on which to find out!

Thanks for taking your time to vote!

Yes, agreed. For me, it comes from being a cinematographer. When you're dealing with a tri-pod, you move the camera from a stick in the back, so moving the stick up means moving the perspective down, and vice versa. So I always do it. It also comes from the fact that I played flight sim games long before I played shooters.

yeah, i'm the only one of my friends who inverts Y, also. it just always seemed more logical to me, for basically the same reasons Thaius mentioned above me.

No. Except when I'm flying, which makes it really awkward in Bad Company 2, when the same 'invert Y axis' option applies to both UAVs and helicopters. The UAV handles like a flying soldier (i.e. normally), but the helicopter flies, which means that I typically crash when I swap between them.

Always for a controller, whether it be the camera or in an FPS, I always invert.

I can't actually pinpoint the moment I started, but I'm pretty sure it was down to a game I used to play quite often, that had no option to non-invert the Y axis camera.

Nope. I usually keep it at regular for every game I play, but if a game comes with the y-axis inverted with no option to change it, I can adapt pretty quickly. So, it doesn't really matter I guess...

I started with inversion with Pilotwings 64 because it was the default layout. I can't play anything without inverting the controls now.

Hmm it appears from some comments that maybe I should have included a "sometimes" option. Oopsie.

This topic just came back into my head today, as I was forced to play Kung Fu Panda (since my son was off school for being ill and I couldn't play anything violent) and there was no option to invert the Y-axis for camera movements. I found it quite hard, definitely wouldn't be able to cope for long in a shooter game without inverting.

Only in flight sims, and that one submarine game that i have that no-one outside of Japan will never have heard of.

Everywhere else, up is up and down is down. I dont even rotate the screen angle in rts games.

It's... Kinda weird when I think about it
What this guy said. Using a controller, I always invert the Y-axis on the camera. I simply can't play otherwise.

Using a mouse, though, the reverse is true.

No, I find it awkward to play when the Y axis is inverted. Although the exception to the rule is with flight sims where it feels awkward without the inversion.

Hellz, yes. Everytime.

It started when I played Ace Combat 4. And when I said "played" I mean "Thoroughly beat it until my eyes bled, S-ranked every mission in Ace mode."

After that much playtime, it became natural to have invert. Everytime I start up a game, that is the very first thing I head for.

I don't get teased or questioned about it at all. Gaming experience usually goes down like this:

Me: Hang on, I have to invert my control.
Gaming buddy(buddies): Cool.

Basically this.

I remember trying to play a game where the option wasn't available, so I couldn't use the shooting mechanics at all.
