I played flight sims long before shooters myself, so it seemed a natural fit. When people ask "why not the side-to-side" motion, it always seemed like steering controls on the sides, like the top of the stick was the top of the avatar's head, pull back, push forward, and steering.

Invert when it feels unnatural to have it not. It's kind of a game-by-game basis, but as stated, usually first person controllers or flight sims I'd rather they be inverted.

It's different with a mouse though for some reason, inverted mouse just seems silly. =/

the reason WHY it is strange (i have posted this same reason in the double digits on here i swear) is because when you press right, do you move left? no you do not, so you can't give me that head excuse, what about when you press right and down? does your head move left and up?

no, it does not, therefore that excuse is null (sorry if this came across as rude but this reason has been stated to me so many times but it is NOT logical)

First 3D games I encountered were flight sims and a bit later on the original Star Wars arcade game. By the time first person shooters got mouselook, I had had about 20 years of gaming experience with inverted sticks, so that's the only way I can play them.

It's sort of like when some genius programmer decides that you're going to move the camera with the left stick... it's just all sorts of wrong.

With any FPS, I treat the control stick like my head. With anything with flight, I treat it like a joystick on a plane. It gets really hard to set up properly for some games. I remember having to specifically calibrate my joystick backwards so that it wouldn't change how the mouse worked in Battlefield 2142.

Comes down to torque. Moving your head forward has you look down. Moving it back makes you look up. Moving your head to right has you look right, to the left, left. It's simply how the neck pivots.

They are thinking of the head and stick as muscle movements and in a horizontal plane. when the muscles on the right side of your neck contract, you turn your head right. But, when the muscles on the back of your neck contract (pulling back on the joystick, pushing back/down on the control stick), your head tilts up. Whereas, you think where I'm still stuck for a lot of games, where you're thinking of your head and the stick in a vertical plane, and its the movements without muscles. IE, left for left, up/forward for up, downright/backright for downright.
Logic solved. Blame flight sims.

wait what?

if you were controlling your head, TILTING it to the right makes it peek right, not actually look right, if you were controlling it like a joystick, pushing it right makes your head go left, not right. therefore thats where my "only Y invert" doesn't make sense.

i get what your saying, but regardless the "head" logic isn't solved, i could care less if you want to do it that way, but if you put the joystick as your head that doesn't solve the "only Y axis" logic.

Almost all games have their Y-axis inverted when I'm using a controller or joystick. The only time it's not is when I'm using a mouse. It feels natural and makes sense.

Third-person camera control? Yes.

First-person games? No.

So it depends on what you mean. I prefer keeping first-person normal, since I usually only play first-person games on the PC (and because UP IS UP, DAMN IT).

sure it does. Like I said, its which muscles are used for which movements. If you'd like to do a test, just move your fingers around your neck while turning your head to see which muscles get shorter. I think you get the front and back just fine anyway. They think of it in the way of whichever muscles you use are what the stick controls, therefore while the Y axis is inverted, the X is not.

Nope, and never did. I dont see a point to it. Its pretty simple, up is up and down is down. Only time I want my Y-axis to be inverted is when i'm flying.

Someone who inverts their Y-axis, can you please tell me the point in why you do it? I dont really see a reason why that option should be in a game

If some people would rather have it, why WOULDN'T it be included? Not like it takes a lot of time to add the option for it.

I do not. In fact, it frustrates me when it's inverted by default. Up/forward should be up, it just makes sense, at least in my mind.

once again i get what your saying, but that's your muscles twisting, not actually getting shorter and taller like when you move your head up and down, and just say this, if you were to put a joystick on the back of your head, if you pressed it to the right, would it not move left? and if you pressed it to the top, would it not move down?

It depends.

Basically in situations where a downward force would result in upward motion inverted is the way to go.

I always invert, it is more imersive for me and just feels right. It used to be default for just about every thing.
