Just so you know I'm not here to poke fun or be an arsehole. I'm here to find an answer to a question I've had stuck in my head recently. Any insensitivity is probably due to the fact I care very little about polotical correctness and I lack alot of tact when it comes to matters such as this.
Listen, being politically incorrect, or tactless is exactly the same as being an asshole. The only people who differentiate between those two is the people who believe they have a right to be assholes to others. You are not born politically incorrect, it is not an excuse. You're tactless? Fine, go work on it. If not for everyone around you, then for yourself. It might make people want to approach you more kindly as well.

Can you imagine what it's like to be compared to a paedophile or someone who performs bestiality?

No?

Try it? Seriously. Would you feel angry? Would you feel sad? Would you be insulted?

Congratulations, you have now mastered the first step into empathy.

Step two: Envision the question you wanted to ask and think before you hit that enter button whether or not the question would insult you if it were asked to you. Is the answer yes? Try again.

do not unto others as you would not have them do unto you.
You are asking me to change what kind of person I am. I refuse. I don't want to be politcaly correct because i think its bullshit. I had an opinion, a niggling feeling that I couldn't shake and wanted to resolve it. My delivery shouldn't matter. If someone thinks less of me for having free will then so be it.
If someone calls me anything i turn the other cheek and don't waste my breath.
First, you said you had a question, now it's an opinion?

If you really didn't care about other people and their opinions, then why bother shouting out yours to the world? Do you want to convince them? Do you want them to listen to you?

If you thought being polite was bullshit, then why post that you don't mean to be an asshole when you obviously don't care whether or not you are one. 'cause you're such a bad boy, you ain't ever gonna change, right?

I do think less of you now, and I'm guessing, based on the other discussions here that there are a lot of people in this thread who are thinking less of you now. Also, you haven't turned me the other cheek. I called you something, and here you are, saying you want to be yourself. Defending your right to be 'politically incorrect'.

Do you exercise your free will when you talk to your mother? your teachers? The elderly in your neighbourhood? Does your delivery matters then? They are no more deserving of your respect than the people on this forum, than the gay people we're talking about.

Change is a natural aspect of life, I should sincerely hope that you are not the same kind of person as you were when you were five. Think of it as growing up.
Nope, i live in my own little fantasy world of blunt statements, unclear opinions, outlandish metaphors used to describe getting killed in a video game and a constantly stagnating novel that drowns in rewrites. As soon as reality stops being so lame then I'll give it a try. I never wanted to grow up.

There, at least now you're being honest.

I do not understand people who say they cannot relate to gay relationships. Why not? I honestly don't get it! I'm gay and I find it perfectly easy to become invested in straight relationships. I honestly think that the reason a lot of people claim they can't is that they've never really experienced a good portrayal of one. I know I'll probably get a lot of replies, and I would be interested to hear from people about why they don't like it other than "it disgusts me", something else I just don't get either.

I do think game developers need to make a bit more effort with this. I get it in some games, it doesn't fit, but sometimes it could work. I mean something like a Final Fantasy game, where you have all these characters hanging out for a very long time. Surely it would come up! C'mon Square! Just confirm that Vanille and Fang are a couple!

EDIT: I've noticed a few people posting sarcastically how we should add transvestites and people with disabilities as if it's ridiculous... Yeah. We should. Why not? If it fits or could fit and works, why not? These people exist. Why shouldn't they be represented in art and culture?

You know what gaming needs more of? Obese black peg-legged transsexuals with a crab arm and a robot hand, and they have cancer in their peg leg.

Boycott and petitions, motherfuckers.

poll answer: bengay because it sounded like the funny answer

i don't care if there more gay character but they have to be real characters that have traits beyond being gay. like people in real life
in other words they don't remind everyone that their gay in every conversation because that would make them a crappy character
if they crappy character your better off not have them at all

good or decent gay character it can think of from games i played

Veronica Santangelo from fallout new vegas
i like having her as a follower for mostly her personality and she punches stuff
and the fact that she is a lesbian is meaningless to me.

Arcade Gannon also from fallout new vegas
i have not even started his side quest yet so at this point so i don't know much about him
i do know he is gay but that is not his only characteristic so at this point he is a decent character so far

sorry, I am going to interject here. A little bit of political correctness/sensitivity is a great thing, but (at least in NY state) there is far too much of it, to the point where it ENCOURAGES dishonesty, fear, and racism. I have personally seen someone get fired for catching a minority stealing from the store, only to have that person turn around and label them a racist (actually i have seen it a few times). Why? political correctness.

I have worked in Alabama, the heart of the "southern" stereotype, and you know what? They are LESS racist than the people in NY state, one of the most politically correct states in the country. why? because extreme political correctness BREEDS RACISM. The people in Alabama are not politically correct at all, yet they are much nicer, respectful, and honest than the politically correct areas.

Sensitivity is a noble aspect, but like everything else too much of it is a bad thing. Right now we have too much sensitivity and not enough honesty, respect, or common sense.

And no, I am not a republican.

More sexual equality in gaming? Where do I sign up?

I mean, there's really no way you can be against this without being a douche. As long as it's done properly without stereotyping homosexuals or giving us heterosexuals the short end, there are zero downsides to it.

I think that is the main crux of the issue here.

I mean, those are big IFS you put in there.

The ballad of gay tony from GTA IV??? There are quite a few gay people in games, you just have to know where to look.

Sometimes I hate the romance options so much I wish I could choose gay options. Sometimes I do because they're the best fit. If I like the character, then I'll romance them in a game. Don't care.

I like Bioware's stance on things - they give you a selection of gay/straight and bi characters and let you choose. I sometimes wish all characters went both ways, but that's not really realistic, so I'm good with having multiple options for whatever floats your boat.

I do wish more RPGs and such gave you a choice on who to romance, though. I'd have gone after Yurick or Mirania in The Last Story, for example, (not) screw Calista.

... Or games could play out like FFVI, where everybody kinda has a thing for someone else but they don't act on it, because, well, the world is ending and they've gotta save it. They can all fiqure out their love traingles/squares/pentagons/hexagons/septagons/octagons/heptagons... whatever ten-a-gons is, etc later.

But yeah, much more gay, for both genders.

With the massive over saturation of homosexuality in games now, if anything it needs to go the other way because there is disproportionate representation.

Most gay characters are horribly written. Bioware's gay characters and a lot of the gay characters in Japanese developed games are so embarrassingly awful that they make me feel homophobic.

The only gay characters I've really liked are Arcade Gannon, Gay Tony, and maybe a few others like Dethmold from The Witcher II. The best gay characters are the ones that just happen to be gay. Most developers fuck it up by creating a character whose sole purpose is to be "The gay dude" and building a bunch of drama and angst related to that.

Still waiting for the day we got a cool, badass, and most importantly, PLAYABLE gay character.

PS: The people who keep saying they don't care about a characters sexual preference and how it wouldn't really bother them if X character was gay are so full of shit it's coming out of their eyes.

I can't really speak for most AAA games, because I generally don't play 'em... but as some have said, Fallout: New Vegas stands as a beacon of a sexuality correctly portrayed in gaming. Sexuality is part of each character, but it's never the focus of a character, even with the Vegas prostitutes. Everyone has more important shit on their minds... they live in a dangerous wasteland, after all.

and take issue with this only because....it kind of feels like me complaining I'm having "guns" shoved down my throat in a game like uncharted

It may be somthing that you personally are not interested in seeing in a game but I belive that its whatever the creator wants to create
That's fine, they can make games that focus on gay and straight relationships and make them mandatory. But I will never, ever buy them. It's the same reason I won't even give the game Catherine a second look, mandatory relationships in games is something that I will never ever care about. Gay AND straight alike.

One of the things I like about games is that sometimes you can get excellent roleplay out of them. It's just personal fanon, but if the game does't contradict it, there's no reason to assume that Gordon should love Alyx, who he has almost nothing in common with, over Barney, who at least grew up in about the same time period, if nothing else.

Really, homosexuality only needs to be in a game if romance or sexuality at all is explored or talked about in the game. Sexuality doesn't need to be mentioned in a game like League of Legends because it's not important to the gameplay and the story is mostly for extra flavor anyways. In a game its really best to just assume that the characters have no sexuality until the topic is brought up.

Of course the problem is that most straight people assume everyone they meet is straight like themselves unless told otherwise hence the reason people have to "come-out of the closet". In real life assuming someone is straight works roughly 9/10s of the time and people apply to characters in games the same way as real life forgetting that fiction doesn't have to conform to real life demographics at all. So in a game, developers have to make it PAINFULLY obvious that a character is gay or else people will argue forever that the character is straight as if liking a gay character makes them gay also through some weird transitive property or something.

As someone who is gay, I don't want a one-dimensional gay character; I want a strong, interesting character who happens to be gay.
