Arcanum. Do you need a patch AND a fan patch to fix glitches? Maybe. Never encountered any myself, but there appear to be many.

Is it horribly imbalanced? Yes.

Does it have extensive character customization, fun gameplay and excellent plot? Very yes.

One of my favourite games, but does it ever have problems.

Pretty much every game developed by Obsidian, Troika, Black Isle, and Bethesda?

Seems to be an rpg thing. Game gets released with a load of glaring flaws and problems which are then cleaned up either by the developers themselves, the fans, or a mix of the two to reveal the fantastic game underneath. Certainly the case with every single Troika game from Arcanum to Temple of Elemental Evil and finally Vampire: Bloodlines. Obsidian also has that flaw, with Kotor 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2 both in a wretched state on released before in Kotor 2's case being fixed up by the community, and in NWN2's case by support from the developers.

As for Bethesda, they made solid games on release... it's just their games tend to get better over time as more modders work to improve and change the basic game formula. Bluntly put I haven't really enjoyed a Bethesda game out-of-the-box since Morrowind, but given time and the dedicated communities work and even games which I otherwise found boring are given a second life.

Hell, here's a fun one for ya too: World of Warcraft. I remember when the game was first released there were so many server and client problems that crashing was a regular issue and so many glaring flaws and exploits were possible I'm kinda amazed WOW ever became as big as it has. But then I guess that's what continued support from a developer can do!

STALKER: SoC.

The only game where the company actually tells you not to patch, it may cause more problems...

But after a couple patches (they streamlined everything, 1.0 was terrible compared to what it is now) it's a great game..and hardly crashes at all!

Great game and the saddest part is that the developers weren't the ones that patched it to perfection it was the modding community with the STALKER Complete mod.Don't get me wrong I'm thankful and admire the work that people put into making them. It's just so unprofessional and it makes me the consumer feel a little ripped off when products as broken as the games mentioned in this forum are still distributed to us.

It seems a bit early to say this, but New Vegas, anyone?

I'm told that WoW was kinda buggy on day one, and look what it's become.

The developers tried, they really did. They released what, 7 patches? The X-ray engine was entirely too ambition for it's own good.

..which also touches on why RPGs are generally more buggy than other games. They're very ambitious games, they try to do a lot, and yes, sometimes fail. But think about all that goes into an RPG, ..think how -big- some RPGs are.

and more points worth mentioning:

KOTOR 2 was not Obsidians fault.

It's been said before, but Fallout 3 is definitely on the list, with the exception of the PS3 version. No matter what, YOU WILL FREEZE CONSTANTLY. I've had it lock up on me for 3 hours then suddenly come back. Superbuggy. >.<
No. not no matter what. I froze 0 times in my time playing Fallout 3. :p ...But worth mentionign there is the Gamebryo engine wasn't made by Bethesda, so their mods to the engine to get it to do what it wants got in the way, and it's actually not even that, "Bethesda's game engine" Is a mish-mash of third party software. It was just -asking- to be buggy, but it probably worked great on their test computers.

...and..i'll shut up now >.>

I never encountered any glitches in my (at least) three playthroughs of Knights of the Old Republic 2. But that was great. I'm enjoying New Vegas, but it still is broken so I don't think it counts yet.

This is like the "List some Obsidian games" thread.

I don't understand the Fallout 3 glitches. I bought the game at Christmas about a month after it was released and I found no problems

However Fallout New Vegas is a whole new story

I'm surprised that for all the mentions KoTOR II is getting, no one is mentioning KoTOR I. I still can't play that game because of the massive number of bugs.

I encountered many in this list once the game was said to be stable so I dodged alot of these bullets. I do research most times before buying a game and because of it rarely buy on release day. This actually saved me money on Alpha Protocol's release recently as I was REALLY close to pre-ordering it.

The one I did not dodge however, was Civ 4. I bought on release day and it was riddled with bugs from installation to playing. They had it playable within the month though. Then I became a little irritated at the content once I was able to play it and found Civ 3 to be the better game between the two. I had became convinced that the Civ franchise was heading to the crapper.
However, in the end after the last expansion, I have to say Civ 4 became better than any of its predecessors by miles and miles.

Vampire: TMBL. Bugged to unplayable levels at launch, one of the best rpgs of all time now.

I would add another STALKER game - Clear Sky. Maybe not as good as Shadow of Chernobyl, but when released CS was almost unplayable. Now it runs ok, its a good little game that I have replayed a couple of times.
