Devil May Cry 4. I loved 1 and 3 and was excited to hear about DMC4, I haven't played much of 2 but it wasn't bad from what I did, but I really couldn't get into 4. I lost my save data the first time I got to Dante, and the second time I played I felt so uninterested I just set it to easy, trudged through until I got to play as Dante and then haven't played since. If I were to go back to 3 or even 1 I could probably play them, enjoy, and beat them again, it's not the formula getting old, nor was it even Nero, hell I like Johnny Yong Bosch as a voice actor, a great deal, my only problem is he sounds so samey with his voice, but that's another topic. Perhaps 4 just lost the spark, but getting through the game halfway both times to the point where I get to play as Dante and not want to continue? I dunno, you'd think playing as Dante would make you want to continue, but I hear it's just the same levels backwards and it just feels cheap.

TL;DR, Devil May Cry 4.

I really, really, really hated Bioshock. Sure, the opening was great, but after that it was just awful. Add in bland weapons and enemies, boring NPC's you can't interact with in any way. It promised so much, then completely failed to deliver.

Oh, and OP, how did you get lost during the first level of Mass Effect? It's practically a straight line...

Oblivion for me. I just can't get into it. I know it's awesome, but it's just too boring for me to like it. Not even with all the mods I've gotten.

Oh hi! I didn't see you there. Well now that you are here sit down and listen.

I bought Mass Effect a few months ago (due to both a friends recommendations and the MASSeffectIVE fan base it seems to have on here), got home, sat down and turned on my 360 and stuck the disc in. I was prepared for the greatest gaming experience of my life. And then... well then nothing.

I got about an hour into it and was just not having any fun. My whole experience involved me creating a character and giving him a backstory (which was pretty much relayed back to me in the first 5mins of play), then landing on some unknown planet where I proceeded to wander around this plant lost, cold and confused. I met a girl, got lost again and then my attention span evaporated and I gave up. I have tried to go back and give it another go but it just doesn't work for me.

So Escapists, has this happened to you? What game have you played, that everyone said was great but just couldn't get into?
Actually, I understand you. The first Mass Effect takes time to get into. I personally played the second one first, and I think it was mainly because I liked it so much I was able to like the first one. I'm currently trying to force me through it a second time with closer to 100% completion, but it's impossible... So yea, it's pretty easy not get into the first.

Still, it's worth it when you notice all the small changes in the second game. It might only be some persons that are changed here and there, some mails and some small sidequests or dialouges, but it's AWESOME! :D

Nope. Not everyone likes the big games that get a lot of attention. I mean, look at all the people that hate Halo for different reasons.

All just a matter of opinion, not all games are for everyone. At the same time, though, you'll find this subject attracts a lot of the 'Mainstream games are so lame, I prefer the games that kind of fly under the radar, you know' And those are pretty bad reasons.

But hey, why not- I've never really cared for any of the Mario games. Most of them I haven't played and I'm not sure that I've ever beaten one either. My favorite of the games that I have played, though- was Super Mario Sunshine, to be honest. Though I never played Galaxy, and don't see that happening any time soon.

I read everywhere and was told by everyone that Braid was the second coming, one of the greatest games of the generation and would revolutionize games as art. I dropped the $15 on it and proceeded to hate every single second of my time with it.

Thank God there is someone else out there who hates that game.

I bought it expecting a revolutionary new style of game, heavy atmosphere, great story, compelling gameplay, etc. The atmosphere and designs were spot-on, but the gameplay was turgid, generic FPS nonsense. Very very disappointing.

OP: I loved Mass Effect, but I thought ME2 took most of the good things about it and jumped up and down on their head until they were given brain damage. The ammo thing, for example, is a good case in point. You couldn't run out of ammo in ME, but the game designers felt that more advanced weapons (in terms of the universe) should suddenly have ammo clips (whether or not you want to call them 'cooling clips' is up to you) and render any decent weapons you obtain suddenly nigh-on useless. And then there's the planet scanning. *shudders*

I didn't hate Bioshock but it was far from what it was hyped as. Like you said, it was just another FPS although witjh a colorful backgrounds.

GTA IV. I HATED this game SO FUCKING MUCH, and I don't get what people see in it. It's a mediocre, poorly written, overrated mess of a game, and I hate it more than I've ever hated anything.

cod mw 2, that game was just unimaginative, ugly and boring. also filled with hackers and no mods to stop them.
