Sonic.

I think he adequately represents the game industry as a whole- creativity for the sake of fun, then replaced with cynical profit-mongering.

After just completing Ocarina of Time yesterday (probably the 3rd or 4th time now), i'm going to say Link.
Yes, they're all amazing icons to gaming, but Link just is so much more.... epic :D

Certainly none of those.

The only thing Mario's an icon for is getting pillaged horrendously for ~30 years and still making loads of money.

Where's Gordon Freeman? I'd say he's the PC-gaming icon of all time.

I have to say Mario. He is the reason i began playing games...I first played it at a friend house. Ah, the memories.

It was really hard to chose between Mario and Link. I started of my gaming on consoles with Mario and even played Galaxy when it came out but I chose Link because I enjoy the Zelda games better nowadays than Mario which is a bit easy at these years, Samus comes at a good third place but only started playing when corruption came out. Tried the games before but didn't fall for them until the last part of the searies.

Define 'icon'. If by 'icon' you mean a figurehead, a shining example of gaming brilliance that never grows old, then names like Guybrush Threepwood and Kyle Katarn are sadly missing from your most incomplete list. If by 'icon' you mean a franchise that's been milked for every mean-spirited, penny-pinching drop over the years, then I say Mario and congratulate you on your comprehensive list of brilliance!

LINK!

The time-travelling, monster-slaying, soul-capturing, tights-wearing MAN-OF-ACTION!

Weep tears of despair at his magnificence, and do not mention the cartoon. That, does, not, exist.

When it comes to an Icon, yea- have to go with Mario.

Epitomizes everything about an icon for gaming, nearly everyone knows about him, even without playing his games, and knows at least some of the music or something about it. As much as his games have never been my cup of tea, and how the majority of the crap that Nintendo throws him into- I have to admit he's THE Icon for gaming.

Mario?
Mario is nothing compared to the legend that is, CRASH BANDICOOT.

Well, his first 3 games were amazing.
Then they just sucked, like Spyro's.
Though Crash Team racing was even better than Mario Kart IMO.
agreed. it was better than mario kart..no more to be said

Crash. Because he started my love of gaming. Yes, it's completely personal and sentimental, but whatever. Oh, and his first racing game, Crash Team Racing, is worlds better than Mario Kart has ever been.
YEAH!!!!!!!!

i voted for snake, but i honestly think crash. He was my first ever game character...but that was only from the list. All of the real icons are missing. What about spyro, the chicken from skull monkeys, james from silent hill 2 etc.
