It has to be Snake for me. MGS blew my mind and changed the way I thought about video games when it came out, like no ever game has done for me since. But I'm a little confused, is the question who is the most kickass icon? Or who makes a better icon ie. is more well known, instantly recognisable. Because if that's the case, I'd have to say Mario hands down, everyone knows who Mario is. Hell, my 30 month old nephew knows who Mario is.

Mario was never that impressive, and he's just annoying now. I played the original Mario, got bored, and put in the Legend of Zelda or Duck Hunt.
Sonic is even more a laugh than Mario. It's like seeing a washed up whore at age 50 pretending she's still 20.
Link is Okay. At least his games are still somewhat good.
I never really thought of Solid Snake as an icon. I guess he is if you're into that series.
Crash Bandicoot. OMG, please just turn off the PSX. I swear I'll be good, just don't put that monstrosity on.

If this is all there are for gaming icons, I ask why can't we just end games in their prime instead of allowing them to degenerate into this?

As much as I do like him, I don't think there's really 1 single iconic character for all games. There's probably 1 or 2 icons for each genre that most people know. Platformers have Mario and Link, Stealth games have Sam Fisher and possibly Altair, FPS games have Master Chief, Doomguy, and Gordon Freeman, Pac Man is a symbol for... nothing, Horror games have Issac Clarke, the list goes on.venom 3135 said:

Crash for me. But as THE genuine gaming icon, out of all of these I'd say Mario's most widely known, therefore a more suitable gaming icon.
