Desktop computers are still superior in any imaginable way, particular as they are easier to upgrade.

Some say there will be a market for gaming laptops in the future but I rather doubt that.

In any event, I'd love a high-performance 14 inch laptop, but I've never really found one.
This is what I just tried to buy on Black Friday, and Alienware was actually the cheapest. I'd be happy to let you know if it works out. I'm going to take it on the road soon.

I carried a 17 inch Sager in my bag for a year...with 45 minutes of battery life. It had as much power as I could wish for at the time and was great when I was stuck somewhere for a while but I was constantly terrified of breaking it in transit as I didn't have any room for any kind of protection for it where as I can fit a freaking pelican case around a 14 incher and shove that in my bag.

I'd say desktop, not just because you can upgrade it and it's more powerful etc. but if you get wireless keyboard and mouse, you can use it from your bed/sofa just like a laptop, which incidentally is exactly what I'm doing right now.

There is no such thing as Gaming Laptop. There are lappies that can run games averagely. Desktop all the way for gaming.
so my 700 quid laptop that runs crysis on max isn't for gaming? ok... better throw it in the rubbish...
Your laptop doesn't run Crysis on max unless you bought it from the future.

Hands down, desktops are better in terms of performance per dollar spent. There are other concerns which can make laptops superior, but if all you're worried about is performance, go with a desktop. There's less heating issues and the hardware is flat-out better for the same amount of money.

Also, don't buy from Alienware. They add a ridiculous amount of money to the charge, where you end up paying almost double what the thing is actually worth. Your best bet is to build it yourself out of parts from Newegg. If you are incapable of/don't want to do that, Falcon NW and Origin PC are both better options for pre-built machines.

- A 15" Macbook Pro would honestly be a pretty good option, as you get something quite light and thin, with 7-8 hours of battery life, quad core processors, and decent graphics that switch automatically between integrated and dedicated... and some of the best build quality around. But, I won't force the point, considering how much emotion it can create in a gaming forum... and there are of course solid Windows alternatives. The Alienware M11x is pretty decent, though it's really only a "gaming" laptop by name, because Alienware makes it.
Since you didn't want to force the point too far, I'll just say this and drop it: For every game that gets released on the Mac, there are at least FIVE others that are released on the PC, and none of the Mac games are Mac exclusive.

OK, now, personal take, about 90-99% of the time you're going to want desktop, for all the reasons stated. However, in the rare occasion that your career has you away from home more often than not, then your only real option is a laptop. If you're choosing a laptop so you can game while watching TV...first off, I have to question what kind of low-attention-span games you're playing (*coughWoWcough*) and second...just get a cheap laptop to stream TV beside your desktop. I have a laptop that's over 5 years old, and while it can't game for shit, I can watch damn near anything on it.

I own a gaming laptop but I miss the configuration of a desktop. That's what I will be buying next once I save enough.

Sager is usually pretty reasonable too and not many folks know about them, most of the "custom" shops I've seen online basically use Sager shells for laptops
Well, only in that they use Clevo shells like Sager do.

Quite a simple question for those of you that are PC gamers, Which is better overall. Alienware Laptop or Alien ware Desktop Pc ?
alienware nothign. dekstop beats laptop, build your own and you can have somethign that is highest end for the next ten years for 900 euros. i build my own and it is EASY. just read the manals you get covered in in and watch a youtube vid for a general idea of build order.
you can do it in about 5-6 hours if you know nothing about it, and after having built one, that goes down to an hour XD

Macs are only good PCs when you've got a rich family that buy Apple stuff because they think they are the best computers in the world - my friend seems to think that Macs are better than regular desktop PCs at everything, even though they are so overpriced its unreal.

I want to know where you got your laptop. Cause mine would have been 1500 before shipping.

Gaming laptops are for people who either have so little free time they can only play games during public transport commutes, for people who travel so much they spend more time out of home than in it, or for people who simply HAVE to be able to game in every home of their house (I cannot think of a single legitimate reason why this would be the case)

Build your own desktop PC, Only buy a pre-built PC if you have exactly zero technical expertise, no willingness to learn basic technical knowledge, don't know anyone with any technical expertise or have more money than sense. NO gaming laptop is as powerful as a custom desktop built for the same price. Fact.

well i got it from dell, it was ~$1100 due to a discount that i had on dell laptops. the equivelent desktop, while i don't remember by how much, was more expensive.

also i got this thing four years ago, so take that as you will.

gotcha, I guess it also depends on the deals you can nail down, and the power of your system that you want. For instance a laptop can only get so powerful, while a desktop has far more possibilities.

They do.
It is you that do not understand that when people say PC they mean Desktop PC.
When they say Laptop they mean Laptop PC.
And finally a mac is a mac PC.

There is no need to specify each and every time.
Humans pull this on a lot of things all the time.

Better get used to it.

Alienware nothing! Seriously, Alienware computers are some of the most expensive, whilst having not much power gaming computers. Let me put things into perspective, an alienware with a 3.2Ghz proccesor and a gtx 550 is MORE expensive than the one im building, which has a 3.5Ghz proccesor and two gtx 560 ti!

OT: Well, a gaming desktop is always better, because they can be upgraded and are cheaper than getting a decent gaming laptop. I think people should have the gaming side in their desktops, and use the laptop for simple stuff like web browsing.
Perhaps you're misinformed. I didn't feel like doing another build and I wanted a warranty, so I bought an Aurora R3. i7 2600k, gtx560, 8gb ram, 2TBs worth of hard drive, and the kicker, with the liquid cooling and case layout in general, underload in a heated room, its never gotten above 29c in any zone. I only paid ~$1500 shipped with a 3 year warranty that covers any kind of damage. Their prices on their base model systems have dropped like a rock in the last 6 months, and to me, it's worth the premium for the warranty and support.

And to the 'uR n00bz' calls that will probably result from this, this is the first system I haven't built myself since my first 486dx2 system in 1992, and I'm the head of an IT department on a fairly large campus. It's nice being able to just pick it and get it, and have it all work as intended and be covered by a warranty for once.
