The RPG template tends to be: you are a sword wielding unlikley hero with a huge destiny, you amass a party of quirky companions, the most important of which is a beautiful woman who you inevitably fall in love with - a love she inevitably returns.

To break the mold this is often played with: swords become magic, guns or cards, the beautiful woman can become mildly attractive and the quirky companions are interchangable with braindead AI drones.

I was wondering about the love mechanic - do you think that the main character, or secondry characters could be gay or have gay relationships with other characters - No Sex, just acknowledgement.

I was wondering how far you could take 'equality' before it became known as a 'gay game'.

Personally i think that gay secondry characters would be fine, no sex; just diologue that reflects that they care for each other.
Although im really not sure if kissing would be well recieved, so i'm on the fence there.

Seems pointless. I mean, what percentage of people are gay? Less than 5, I would guess. You can't make a game for everyone, so you cover as many bases as possible.

Aslong as there kissing or even straight kissing in my games it's disturbing when i'm trying to kill some fool.

Around 13% at the last census buddy. Thats a lot of people.

Also, why would only gay people buy a gay RPG? I would if it was any good.

Why is there no option of "I don't care about my charecters sexuality he could be into the freakydeaky sutff if that got him off I just want to play the game"

Hmmm... how about if you get to choose if your character is straight or gay? I can see nothing wrong with that, just another option when you create your character.

I guess more like 5%. Might be more like 10% if it was more socially accepted or under 1% if it is a criminal offence. More people are gay than are orphans who were found with magic amulets that are the key to saving the world anyway.

I can't imagine them doing this and it not being off-putting.

In general I'd prefer romance is left out of films/games entirely, unless it's integral to the story and well done, i.e. Final Fantasy 7,8,& 10. It's just when it's shoehorned in for no good reason it annoys me.

Being straight myself I can get excited for the characters in a straight romance story, if it were a gay story I'd feel like it wasn't there for me to enjoy, and wouldn't be able to empathise.
If the gay romance was for side characters it wouldn't be a deal breaker if the rest of the game was good but it would still feel like it was forced. Unless whoever wrote it was amazing.

Despite being pretty accepting when it comes to other lifestyles I still get a little freaked out by gay PDAs, like if it's in a TV show I like some warning so I know it's coming.

EDIT: However I voted 1.Yes - the goodness of the game is more important, as if it's a great game I'm not going to let my squicks mean I'm missing out.

I don't see why it should make the slightest bit of difference. People should really grow up. I'm gay, and I don't have a problem playing a straight character.

Well, in RPGs in general, isn't there a trend towards player customisation of the central character? So shouldn't the decision really be left up to players? Can't they choose in the course of the game to flirt with people of the same sex or the opposite sex?

Personally, I'd love to see more games with gay central characters. It's not like it has to be a big deal. At this point, I'm happy as long as there can even just be subtext in games that implies a character is gay (without having writers give a knee-jerk response to that of shoving copious spoonfuls of 'Look at how straight our character is' down our throats the second they get scared people might perceive gay subtext in the story).

well, Vaan was gay, so I've already played a game with a gay main character, even if he took a back seat to the first two characters with any actual importance to hit the scene at the start of the game.

seriously, I know he wasn't gay... but what the hell was with the whole not having a shirt and always sounding like he's a 4 year old who just woke up after a bad nightmare thing?

What with one of my best friends being a lesbian, I can safely say I'd buy an RPG with homosexuality in it as long as it was GOOD.
