If it makes sense for the character then who really cares? Anyone who wouldn't play a game simply because there's a homosexual character in it is pretty darn stupid in my opinion.
It doesn't really matter does it? I mean, in my favourite RPG, Oblivion, you've got free reign. Your character may well be gay. In never have made a gay character personally, but I could if I liked, and I'm sure someone's made a mod so it's possible. It's heavily implied that the Orc smith in Bliss is gay as well.
Makoto was gay and he turned out to be a very central character who appeared at key points and was in love with Toya. I believe there was even a (albeit forced) male-male kiss scene at the end.
Aside from that i don't see why you should force this stuff down people's throats. I'm perfectly happy with the option to be gay, just don't make me be gay. Take DAO. You could play a gay or lesbian character if you wanted, but the romance subplots were entirely optional full stop. Don't make a linear RPG where the protagonist suddenly comes out as being gay. It feels offensive and one-sided. I'm not gay, so how the hell can i possibly relate to this? And while you may argue gay people feel excluded from hetero romances, they clearly do not make up the majority, and unfortunately majority > minority. If you're going to make everything PC, why not have a black hero, or female hero, or black female hero, or Asian hero, or... you get the idea.
The idea of a role playing game is to get into the role of the person whose life you are playing out. You're not trying to project yourself on to him / her unless it's that kind of RPG (like DAO). Final Fantasy games are about experiencing the character's and party's story, not telling your own. By whining about there being a typical 'hero / maiden' trope you're trying to project YOUR life and YOUR feelings onto the character and replace their own with yours. They are characters, NOT avatars.
Because every gay character, male or straight, has been a ridiculous stereotype. Especially fucking DOA. Oh, I'm a gay little femme elf with a thing leather and with sort of a weird lisp! Obviously not offensive.
i dont mind if you give me the choice to be gay or not but if you force me to play as character and thats his only sexual orientation i believe it would ruin a bit of the emersiveness for me(straight male), but if the storys good along with the gameplay it wouldnt bother much.
p.s. i am not trying to be homophobic in anyway its just i like to make the charatcers i play as a vessel for myself
In Dragon Age my first character was bisexual, and I also finished the game once having agay relationship with Zevran. The first was more because I wanted to see if I could have sex with everything in the game than anything else though.
Anyway, as long as the game is good and the story is interesting, I don't mind if the main character is gay. Unless him being gay was the focus point of the whole story, I guess that might make it a bit harder to relate.
I would play the game if it was good. If the game had a great story, characters, and gameplay. Thats all that would matter to me. However if the game had a lot to do with gay culture I would probably avoid it. Just because I wouldn't understand it and the content would be uninteresting to me.
I don't like or understand the NBA all that well so I avoid NBA games, same deal here.
Never, especially if they are in your face about it. I personally am irritated by flamboyant gay people / characters. This would just put me off of the game.
I wouldn't have any problem with playing a gay character what so ever if it was done in a nice way. I mean, the fact that I am straight is not my most defining trait as a person. There are things that are a LOT more important that says a ton more about me then the fact that I like titties. The same thing is most certainly true for a gay person as well.
So basically, if the game is good and they treat the main character as a person and not just some "gay dude lol" then that's fine that's fine. In fact, I'd probably be very interested in playing it just because nobody ever seems to have the balls to try it.
