Eh, does it matter if they're gay? As long a they're suitably heroic then no one should mind playing them. There are lots of ways you can play it where that would be a good puzzle answer. I guess why do you assume anyone who does not have a sexual preference be straight? I mean, considering how overcompensating Duke Nukem is, I could see him being in the closet.

I don't want gay characters simply because I'm not gay. If you get a choice so be it but I want to identify with my characters :S

I'd like it if it was just something incidental about the character, and it wasn't the theme of the entire game.

Yeah,as long as the protagonist is an Epic gay, like Jann from Valkyria Chronicles.

How Epic? He screams "Die for me,honey!" while aiming a huge explosive lance launcher at your rear end. No gay is more Epic than Jann.

Why does it matter?
Some people just arn't comfortable with gayness in a video game, and actual gay people don't seem like they should even care that much, so whats the big deal?
I mean, theres no reason to deliberately make a gay character, as video games already have little plot as it is and making a character gay would make the developers really have to force it into your face (I'm assuming).

I just wouldn't play as a gay guy, either. Just like how I don't like playing as a woman.

The problem with this idea, most of the time, is that a characters sexuality is brought up so rarely I doubt it would change anything; kind of like when J.K. Rowling revealed to the world that Dumbledore was gay.

What does that say about us as a society where gays, women and other minorities aren't as relatable as people. I mean really, the differences are pretty minimal. You'll find more variation within each group than between the groups themselves. Why is it that everyone can identify with a nondescript, late 20's-early 30's, white, heterosexual man with brown hair? Wouldn't it be refreshing to have a change of pace?

Is there any games that actually have a gay main character? That arn't BL. It seems kind of weird that you see a lot of games about saving the girl so I would think they would change it up to make it more unique or something. Do you think their should me more homosexual characters?
it would be gimmicky. why would there be a reason to point out a character's sexuality at all?

Dragon Age allowed you to make a homosexual character.

Anyways, the main character's sexuality doesn't matter to me. I do think it would be a leap for the industry, but there's a lot of homophobia out there so I doubt said game would sell well, unless it's from an already well-established series (Ballad of Gay Tony).

well there is one obscure flash game I can think of where one of the main characters was the ghost of a gay guy. this game is quiet falls and it's inspired by the silent hill games only it has a very strong gay message. although it's not directly obvious until you get to the extras. I think it's a good idea. most film and game characters are lacking diversity anyway.

As mentioned before, there are multiple RPGs that allow you to choose your sexual orientation.

Now, as for games that don't mention romantic relationships or don't use them as big parts of their plot. I don't see why you couldn't just imagine your character was gay. Does it really need to be said in the game? Do you need to be told that it's ok for your character to be gay?

But for games like the Mario series or Kingdom Hearts, where the main character's goal is to save "their love", I don't think a gay protagonist would work. Because it would be hard for most players(the large majority of people are straight) to relate to the character. I wouldn't have a problem with a game like that being made, but I doubt it would do well.

I think it could be fine but I it would work it would either become a stereotypical thing of the main character saying "hey girl friend I just saw the cutest pumps at the male oh and guy at the cash register was gorgeous" or they would play it off as innovative and the whole game would center around it, and they try to make it gritty like I dunno have the PC get aids or something.

There doesn't need to be more homosexuality in games and frankly there shouldn't be much concern for a character's sexuality as it is.

No because the writers of said game series would make it this big deal where people openly tease about it in game or it's just over exerted.

If such a thing should be employed it should be subtle, maybe leaving you to wonder if said character is a bit different. Then maybe a single scene for you to go " ....oh.....oh okay um...didn't see that coming!". But as I said, if done it'd probably be done wrong.
