I'm not sure anybody would really care? I'm not sure why anybody should care anyways. Gay or straight the main character is going to be an outlet for your personification anyways. I doubt any heterosexual or homosexual gamer is going to think "oh geeze, how hot am I?" as they are putting holes in people or commanding legions of dudes to assail another legion of dudes in an rts.

The onl yreal place where sexuality might actually help deliver the atmosphere or plot is in an RPG and most people don't like being told how to play their characters in most proper rpgs.

Dev: "your character is gay in this game!"

Player: "Why?"

Dev: "Because ... he is"

Player: "Does being gay give my character better skills?"

Dev: "No ..."

Player: "Then I couldn't give a shit."

For example, what I like call to 'Fable Syndrome' <.<

I'd like to see more gay characters, i just wouldn't want it pushed in everyone's face.

A stereotypical character would be hilarious in a game that doesn't take itself too seriously, like Bayonetta, but if a game wants to reflect reality a little more it should acknowledge that most gays behave just like any straight person.

Straight people are allowed to hate camp people, because gays hate camp people too xD

it's really not worth bothering with actual romance is basically non existant
Mario is saving the princess because she is a political leader protecting the mushroom kingdom any semblence of romantic motivation is player invented.

Most of the rescue girls could just be replaced with magic gloves/spanners they really don't added anything to the story and their loss is hardly ever reflected in any emotional terms with the main character.

As for controversy half a second of alien side boob got mass effect into the pot hell even the hot coffee mod only depicted hetrosexual sex and that got throughly bashed for it

So I really don't see the reality of people belife that hetrosexuality is actually ok in games when any portrayal of physical intercourse gets blasted as immoral.

If the character isn't a walking stereotype then why not ? This is the 21st century, the only people who have problems with homosexuals are the religious and the retarded.

Of course. I'm actually writing up a story with a gay main character that I hope to get made. And hopefully english football players will actually put some fucking effort into their performance, ff14 won't suck, trolls will cease to exist and 4chan will change their hideous ways and save the world from a zombie/vampire/werewolf invasion through the power of rock.

I think it would be hard to make a gay character. If you go all out with a Big Gay Al kind of flamboyance it would make the game too goofy to take seriously.

The only gay main character I can think is the main character from Fear Effect. I never played the games, but I remember reading a magazine talking about a lesbian relationship in the second game.

Again, it's all the circumstances.
I mean, I wouldn't mind playing a game where it turned out the character was gay. Might be a nice change. Bi might be more accepted by the general populace though... Not that it makes a real difference.
Sometimes I can't help but think the industry's running around not knowing where to aim it's game at.
Then again, even in games where the character is supposedly straight... well... People read into things. Let's not even get started on the whole Roxas/Namine/Axel thing from Kingdom Hearts II.
Then again, that game came from a company who decided the best route for voice actors for Cloud and Sephiroth in the Japanese version of Advent Children was to pick two guys with a fairly big history of gay love story CDs.
Back to the point- Why not just keep it totally open? Just to please everyone. Read it whichever way you want perhaps.

A characters sexual prefernce shouldn't be the reason to play a game. It should just be there to round out the character. For example. i played Fear Effect 2, not becuase it had a lesbian lead but because i enjoyed the game play and story of the first.

Have you played a Final Fantasy game lately?
Just no.

OT: As long as it has nothing to do with the main and the character is not a stereotype then I don't care. Also if they still develop the character and not use the character being just gay as being a deep character and go into detail with characterisation.

Sure, but only if their homosexuality was not a main part of the plot. Or if the developers of the game showed him or her off like it was a completely new thing. Otherwise, I see no problem with it.
Oh I dunno if part of the plot was him being hit on by an oblivious female only to break her heart when he comes out of the bedroom with another guy turning her loss and sorrow in upon itself twisting into rage and finally making her into an evil psycho ***** out to destroy everyone and everything, himself especially it could work that way as part of the main plot and be no more inflamatory then if he boned her and then turned out to be seeing another girl because he was straight at least the gay one would probably turn her down gently

not really. before the waves of knee jerk angry people descend to call me homophobic etc. let me explain. the gaming industry at the moment would not do this well. in fact it would do this terribly. we would be forced to watch through the sort of dodgy low brow camp-fests that would herniate every functioning brain that watched them.

Short Answer: No, it would be poorly executed.

I'm sure in some way a homosexual character can add to a game's story line, but the chances are it wouldn't be subtle in any way what so ever. Sure, a plot twist is nice, but if you've been playing the character as gay for the whole game I won't be in the slightest suprised.
Perhaps the opposite would be better; Have someone seem like they are a homosexual and then when people question them about it indirectly to throw in hetero themes to keep the audience guessing until at the peak he or she plough's the hell out of the opposite sex.

Would not really be bothered, as long as it had a good story.

Also I wish I had a penny for everytime there was a topic to do with homosexual characters

I'd actually like to see a sort of generic bad ass character that instead of sleeping with every female that crosses his path, he just comes up with clever ways not to sleep with them. Then toward the end when you get to the inevitable boss that has to try to seduce him he just says "I'm gay" in the most bad ass way possible.

More generally, I'd dislike some character that was just over the top gay as much as I'd hate seeing a character that was over the top straight. You don't need to sleep with every woman in sight!

I'd play as a gay guy/girl, sure. They often get stereotyped as dainty, camp and just plain annoying, when this is far from the truth. The toughest man i've ever met is homosexual, and hell, He could easily be the protaganist of an EA title.

I think there's been a few lesbian main characters, but it's mostly a demographic thing. I hate to say it but a gay main character that would actually have a serious relationship would be more likely for a game that is marketed to women.
