Poll: Goth Clothing

It doesn't bother me at all, and I will never understand why it bothers other people so much. Either they're "childish" and "unholy", or "pretentious" and a "poser".

Neither of these two groups seem to be interested in the idea that they just like how it looks. I wasn't interested in it, but it's been creeping into my style more and more recently. I just like the associations that come with wearing black, rings and silver crosses. I might as well go full stereotype now that I'm here, at least then people will know a bit about who I am just at a glance. Morbidity, dark places, horror movies, photography? I'm there!

I could definitely date a girl who wore something she picked up at Hot Topic or a rock culture store, or hang out with them if it were a guy. Just because they didn't have to get it in some darkened store and pay twice as much doesn't mean they aren't cool people. I don't give two shits about what the "trend" is.

*nods* I freely admit that my knowledge of the goth sub-culture is lacking, but my impression has always been that showmanship plays a big part. It's making a statement, and that requires a lot of self-confidence. It's the reason I was always rather impressed by the girl I used to see wearing a top-hat around Uni.

It's funny, quite a lot of the goths I knew had the attitude of "I hate it when people stare at me just because I look different".

To wear a long coat, a corset, thigh high PVC boots and a spiked collar you have to enjoy having attention, if you didn't you'd never consider dressing like that in the first place. If you don't enjoy attention you try to shrink into the scenery, but most gothic fashion is designed to make you stand out. By wearing it you're basically agreeing to getting stared at and you've got to play up to it. Goth fashion looks villainous in a lot of cases, it's very grandiose so you've got to have a bit of a moustache-twirling mentality to pull it off. You're going to get everyone in a room staring at you and you can't tell them off for it because you've deliberately caused it, you've got to own the room.

Though I'd barely call 'goth' a lifestyle, it is more an aesthetic school to me. I don't really think there's enough to goth to really fill a lifestyle adequately.

Well if films are to be believed (which they are) it was probably a freak lightning storm. We'll probably have a string of unrelated adventures each, occasionally saying things that segue nicely into the other person's conversation to allow dramatic cross cutting. Eventually there will be a heart rending scene as one sacrifices themselves to allow the other to live.

I hate goth clothing, not because of the clothes but because of the people wearing them.
Goths act like they have problems when their life is fine, and then it's people with real problems that have to put up with the fuckers.

In every genre there are unpleasant people. I know more goths who don't act in the way you've described that who do.

Goths can look good, but thats not to say that they all do. Personally, i'd love to be able to pull off a Gothic outfit, but I feel uncomfortably pretentious just wearing my longcoat...

Oh yes, I too have that problem. I fear people regard me as "wannabe-edgy" or something, but I just like coats... :/

I don't think I could survive very long if I cared how people viewed me based on my clothes. But I dress for my environment, not for atheistics or pleasure, so people see me dressed to suit where I am and what I'm doing.

Gothic clothing and accessories are pretentious and showy. It is nothing but an attention grabbing deviation from the norm, designed purely to turn heads, and if you as a designer disagree then are simply full of yourself.

Hardly a reasonable statement. Most of what I design can be worn as corporate office wear as well as 'goth'. It all depends on what you wear with it. I dress the way I do because I find mainstream fashion to be vomit inducing, not because I want attention.

Having been posting in the "Fashion accessories that piss you off" thread, I noticed a few people complaining about gothic clothing.

Being a kind of goth, alternative fashion designer, corsetiere (I make authentic waist reducing body training corsets using steel bones), and general weirdo, I'm used to it. But it always fascinates me to know why people feel that way. I can understand why people don't find it aesthetically pleasing (I feel the same way about mainstream fashions).

So what about it don't you like? Indulge my curiosities, if you will.
Or, if you like it, let me know what about it you like and why.

Goth fashion is excellent. Sure, it can look crappy but so can ANY clothes if you wear them wrong, or they don't suit you.

Anyone who dislikes goth fashion obviously doesn't have a girlfriend who does gothic fetish modelling.

I like the aspects it take from metal like the leather, wristbands, studs but a large part of it is just stupid and now being goth and emo isn't really how we perceive it. Every goth or emo person I know has really colourful hair and has that tendency to wear some really colourful belts. I knew this person who used to wear nine falmboyant belts at one time. Style is kinda weird now. Help us class of the 1920s! Even the 80s weren't this fucked up.

You don't need a girlfriend who does gothic fetish modelling.. Just pictures/videos of it happening. I site Apnea (Apneatic). But I see you're point, it would help.

I have to disagree with you. A person's style is their style. Just because someone's own style isn't the accepted norm and is commonly bashed in the media doesn't make it childish and something to 'grow out of'.

I think gothic clothes requires subtlety to look good. Some people can pull it off other people just look stupid. Rule of thumb: stay away from baggy.

I was going to type several paragraphs on this, but I think this post sums up what I was going to say quite nicely. It's fine in high school, but once you get a few years of college under your belt it's time to show your identity and individuality through your actions, not your clothes.

When I see an older adult wearing what you might call "goth" clothes, I tend to think of them as just being childish. Sure it's appropriate in some situations, but when you're just out and about it just makes you look like you're trying to hold onto being an adolescent.

I've got a friend that wears Goth clothing, but doesn't take it to an extreme. As long as it's kept at a reasonable level, I think it looks fine, even sort of nice.

I think it can look pretty good. Of course someone can pull it off wrong, but then of course, the same could be said for any "fashion style".

Plus, I find that Goth girls can be incrediably hot.
