I found Dark Souls to be the most polished and rewarding game yet (this year).

Uncharted 3: had an amazing story but worst gameplay of the series (the puzzles were neat though).

Skyrim : amazing world and character progression system but downright ugly textures (mostly stone, I mean flat cobblestone... comeon) and crude character animation pulled me out of the experience every time.

Portal 2 : nice story line funny characters and memorable quotes/jokes but the puzzles were way too damn easy... so it was every time I had no characters to listen to just boring.

Zelda : the third most interesting game here, and the third zelda game I played

Deus Ex : very nice story and gameplay feel if it weren't for the bosses it'd be number one^^ second best this year for now

Saints Row 3 : still pending~

There are still 2 months left in the year (counting this one). There is always a chance that something else "worthwhile" within these two months.
for now, my GOTY goes to either Portal 2 or Mortal Kombat 9.
And we're still waiting for Serious Sam 3: BFE. Whatever that stands for...

It's not my game of the year, but Skyrim will probably sweep the field. And I will yawn. Don't get me wrong, it's more engaging than I expected- I hated Oblivion- but I have gone from zero to "this is fun", whereas I loved Arkham City instantly and it stayed that way.

I'm more of a Mass Effect fanboy anyway, so my year finishes in March 2012.

Again, I think DXHR was a very solid and pretty enjoyable ride despite some minor complaints here and there. But it failed when it was most important to shine, IMO.
Yeah...I found the gameplay to be an excellent marriage of new and old. I never would have thought a stealth/cover system from today would have worked so well for this sort of game.
Of course, it helps that the sneaky elements from the original were preserved.

I like the spy/agent-nature of the game, and the voice-acting was some of the best I've heard in a long while (ironically, except for Mr Jensen who sounds like he gargles gravel for a living). The plot...it has a strong basis, but an ultimately weak and predictable delivery.
I could even forgive the boss fights, despite how out of place they are (they're annoying, but ultimately really easy).

But the part I absolutely cannot forgive, is the ending system. We reach the climax of the story, and it completely falls apart.
And really, there was no reason for it to come apart at the seams at the end. The only things that absolutely had to be maintained in canon for all endings are:
1) The fall of the Illuminatti, or some way that allows for the Illuminati to fall before Deus Ex 1's timeline begins.
2) The introduction of the project that creates the Denton brothers. This isn't much of a problem, given how secretive the D Project would have been regardless of how Human Augmentation turned out politically.

Human Revolution well-exceeded my expectations, which so rarely happens these days in gaming.
However, that ending system pissed me off so much...ugh.

Well, SR:TT is getting awesomer reviews than most expected, but I think Skyrim will win it.

Seeing as the heavenly light of Skyward Sword has not integrated itself into my Wii yet, I can't rightfully put it as my favourite of the year. Not many games have really tickled my fancy this year, but I quite liked Portal 2. Doesn't beat Portal 1, but that's an extremely high bar for a game that had so much punch in such a short length.

Though I agree that not everything has come out yet, so it's not over yet.

That being said, I will consider every year a disappointment until Jak and Daxter get a new game, Sly 4 comes out in full glory (which seems to be next year sometime), and The Last Guardian comes out.

It's kind of a tricky one. I'm enjoying BF3 almost perversely, it will easily be the game of 2011 I sink the most hours into. But it hasn't moved the medium, to sound all artsy.
Portal 2 was excellent, but I think my choice would be LA Noire. I'm not an emotional guy. I may have been playing the wrong games, but I don't recall ever feeling anything about either pro- or antagonists.
I did in LA Noire. I'm not sure what did it, I'm not sure the amazing animation even had that much to with it... but goddamit Cole, how could you?

In any case (no pun intended), LA Noire would be my pick. Now, I should probably get around to giving it another playthrough.

Despite being a better overall product, if Uncharted 3 wins best 3rd person shooter over Gears 3 I'll throw a chair. I've played both of them and Gears 3 does that aspect of things much better. Plus, to categorise Uncharted 3 as a third person shooter kind of diminishes what it is.

That said, after seeing the reviews for Skyward Sword I think that's going to come away with the gold this year.

Skyrim.
Why? Because so far it has blown all of my ridiculously high expectations out of the water.
