God of War came first, so it gets the GoW acronym by seniority. [I feel like someone's going to bring up an even older game that could use the same acronym...]

Gears of War is abbreviated as Gears. I rarely see people use GoW to refer to Gears anyway.

God of War - Why?

Well I've never played a Gears of War game or seen any footage of one beyond the odd t.v commercial and maybe one video review. The series holds no interest to me as a gamer.

I've played the 3 main God of War titles on the other hand. While I consider it to be a subpar game series as a result of it's boring gameplay, the over the top set pieces and characters keep me interested in what's going to happen next.

I'd literally rather watch a pro play God of War on easy and carve through the game than play it myself. I say they incorporate that silly Mass Effect 3 story mode into God of War 4 just for me. That or make the game remotely fun to play.

GoW is God of War and also makes me think of cattle.

Gears of War is shortened to "Gears"

I would imagine on:

360 = Gears of War
PS3 = God of War
Book = Grapes of Wrath

The first result on google is Gears of War website (searched as GoW)

The moment I read those initials, I see Kratos arching his thumbs right before gouging out Poseidon's peepers.

To me, it means neither.

I usually just see 'Gears' for Gears of War, while God of War is only 7 characters (9 with spaces) and can simply be stated without any need to shorten it. I haven't actually seen the GoW acronym used, because almost everyone is aware that two hit game series share those initials and they'd rather avoid confusion.
This is quite literally the dumbest and most nitpicky thing i've done on these forums and i'm sorry but i couldn't help it. God of War is 8 characters, and 10 with spaces, i'm so sorry

Well, Gears is more relevant to me than God of War, but whenever I see the acronym without any context I find there's just a voice in my head yelling "Which one do you mean!?".

I care about Gears of War more but everyone calls it Gears, so that's probably why God of War is ahead, it just makes more sense.

It means "Whoops, which one are we talking about?"

I always clarify if need be... which is rare, as I've played neither.

Don't be; that's totally fine. I'm wondering how my brain messed up such a simple count. I'm not sure how, but I must have mentally used 2+3+2 instead of 3+2+3. Point still stands, it's only se ...eight letters. Very easy to type, and I'm not sure who would feel the need to actively abbreviate that.

Games On Windows.

I don't play either, so it rarely comes up in conversation.

God of War.

Gears of War has always been Gears "Insert relevant number here".

I also hate when people use GW for either of them because then I'm all like Guild Wars? And it never is.

Fuck Gears of War. It's a series about a bunch of morons made of meat grunting at one another. I tried playing the third one, 'just to see,' and it was so godawful I ditched it as fast as I did Bayonetta (albeit for different reasons). By contrast, though it loses its way in some respects, God of War is an awesome series with the most compelling antihero in gaming, sweeping epic events, locations and bosses, and an oft-imitated but never matched combat system. Yes, ok, DMC came first but there are distinct differences. Though I do like that series too. Rant concluded.

God of War, to me at least. Gears is what I call Gears of War. Soon, a third option will be available: Gate of Waffles.
