I consider sentence structure and spelling to be very important. It is exceedingly painful to read a post written by someone with the vocabulary of a high school senior or college student and the grammar of an eighth grader.
Worst recent example: the "Are Microsoft Evil" forum.

BURN THE MISSPELLERS! BURN THE INCOMPETENT! BURN THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Eh-em.

*Straightens his polka-dotted tie.*

I'm an avid grammar and spelling nazi. I prefer sentences to not lok liek thsi, bcauz its r plane annoing. C wat I mean?

As stated before, writing is an art. Not just the creative aspect of it. Show pride in your writings. Don't leave it like a tornado ran through and then giant two year olds came and played with the wreckage. (The letters and words.)

I noticed a spell checker comment earlier.
Is there really a spell check built into some Internet browsers?
Because I have always used IE and assumed that there was little to no difference.
Yes, different web browsers have different properties. Plus, there is a difference in speed and performance as well. Trust me, you can do much better than IE, it's the baseline for web browsers.

Additionally, while I can use proper grammar, my question was: Is it really important on forums? I would never turn in half of the stuff I write here as a school assignment. It just seems like a forum is more of a place for informal conversation. I write here more like I would speak with friends, not superiors.
It is VERY important on this forum. If you've noticed, a lot of the more esteemed members use better grammar, and this is not a coincidence. Posting properly, and using correct grammar is a matter that we here at the Escapist keep in the highest regard. Typing in correct grammatical form makes you seem more intelligent, making your point much more effective.

Also, if you can't bother to take the half-of-a-second effort to make sure that you post with at least some grammar and punctuation, then you're viewed as lazy... No-one likes people who are seen as lazy posters, with the exception of other lazy posters.

Sheer curiosity, do you capitalize the 'I' in a conjunction?
Example: i'm vs. I'm
Which is right?

the only thing I will get you on is "then" vs "than" or if your grammar is so terrible that it makes you sentences ambiguous.

I don't really care about grammer. I think a person should try to used grammer to some degree so we don't get sentences such as....
"y are their skool?" which means, "What purpose does school serve the average man?"

I have to be too proper at college, I'd rather not have to deal with grammer Nazis saying that I have a comma splice or something.

I both love you and hate you for putting up that image.
I love you because it is a perfect example of the kind of crap that should result in a finger being amputated.
I hate you for the same reason, as well as the fact that my brain is now trying to crawl out of my ears.

On topic, if you want to put your thoughts up online and have people discuss them, at least have the decency to make sure your mind spillage is understandable.
To put it visually: do you prefer walking into a room that has been burgled, blown up, and covered in cat blood, or a room that only has a bit of misplaced laundry?
You're my long lost twin.
Oh, and you shouldn't post like that ever.

I do think people take grammar too seriously at times, but I sometimes agree with them. A few typos are pretty tolerable, we all make mistakes, but sometimes it's just embarrassing.
Like when people say some thing that I can't read after reading it over five times. People that are that thick just need to go back to grammar school, plain and simple.
Or at least Get Firefox.

Most people would rather read a well-written post about, say, violence in video games than a poorly written post on the exact same thing.

So yes, it counts. I wouldn't enforce it, nor do I care if someone uses 'wtf' or 'lol', but the amount of effort you put into your post to make it more literate makes a difference in how people perceive you.

For me, proper language and grammar allows me to read what you mean.
When I read, I hear it in my head. If you don't capitalize the "I", for example, I automatically hear a short "I." In this sense, saying... "i wnt 2 skool"
sounds to me like, "eh wunt two skule." I'd automatically start thinking, "What is a skule?"
Yes, I can understand what is being said, but in the translation, it looses its power and/or original connotations.

And yes, I think funny. Don't make fun of me! ;-;
