there's not really a point to it, mostly they're trying to feel smarter about themselves because they don't have the comprehension skills to figure out what is actually being said.

i find it funny since most of the time after outsmarting someone, they'll resort to insulting the person by pointing out the grammar of the other person. then they usually resort to calling people names right after that.

so are they being a troll? yes, they are only doing it to feel superior and antagonize and all around not constructively add to the conversation.

are they breaking forum rules by being a grammar nazi? yes, they aren't advancing the content of the topic, they are stagnating it

i personally don't care about grammar, i've got enough comprehension skills that i can understand what someone is saying if a word or two is misplaced or misspelled. it might take a second or two longer to read but i can still figure it out and i don't even feel the need to try and correct them

There's not really a point to it. I feel that, for the most part, they're just trying to feel better about themselves. I'm also going to put an intellectual slur in here implying that correcting grammar and spelling is their alternative to comprehending conversation.

After being outsmarted, a common technique that I see is to pick at the grammar of the 'victor', right after which is name calling.

So, are they trolling? Yes. To me it seems they're only doing it to antagonise rather than add to the conversation.

I don't care about grammar. I've got enough comprehension skills that I can understand what someone is saying even with a few errors. Might take a little longer but it doesn't bother me.
Friendly neighbourhood mod reminding you the true joy of grammar.

Avoiding the topic at hand to break down what a person has typed? Not the coolest move out there, but definitely not the worst. It's trolling, but on such a weak level it's nearly ineffective. But I will grammar Nazi someone if they speak in L337. That's completely different.
He has a point people.
Don't be idiots.

Yeah, fuck spelling. It's not like we're ever going to need it in life or so anyways, lol. I myself grammar nazi to help people spell better, besides, there's no real excuse for spelling wrong. Programs like Mozilla Firefox have built in spellcheckers, though I'm from Sweden, so mine wants to change everything to Swedish, but still.
This is a great reasoning.
Even on a simpler scale, it's a lot fucking easier to understand proper English than spending 15 minutes deciphering a paragraph of acronyms and "leet-speak".

Being very pedantic by nature, misuse of the language annoys me. Misspellings I can accept, everybody makes mistakes.

However, it costs nothing to use correct punctuation and structure, and it makes you look slightly more intelligent. I know for a fact if I see someone on here fucking up their grammar, I take them less seriously.

I never request people to use proper grammar, spelling or use of language, however, I do like to ensure I'm typing properly because it makes it easier for other people to understand me.

Foreigners messing up their English I don't really mind (like this French fella I know who kept mixing up the words donkey and dog, and also love and like (he went around telling everyone he loved them, it was hilarious)).

When someone makes a stupid grammer mistake, or when I get a text I have to get someone to translate for me, it really bugs me.

Deliberate error, or was that just a fail?
Hmm, yeah, um, on my, um, keyboard, the, um, a and e are next to each other, and, um, I kinda leaned as I was typing and, um...

Yeah, massive fail on my part.

I would consider myself a relatively benevolent grammar Nazi, just because misuse of the English language annoys me so much.

The weird thing is, those who have English as there first language are almost always the worst perpetrators.
Shouldnt that be "their first language" :p
pwned.

i HATE grammar nazi's. Unless your constantly thrashing the english language to a degree where it gets hard to read then correct away. But when i make one fucking mistake and the Nazi has to be the big hero about it and point it out, no one likes you.

Think about it, you know "That Guy", the one that thinks he knows everything and when you mess up he corrects you. Well if you remeber no one liked him, and no one likes you Nazi's, because your "That Guy".

And that list of missused words was just stupid, i can tell alot of people can and do missuse those words but if you still know what the person is talking about it shouldnt matter if they used the wrong hominim (however the hell you spell it, go ahead correct me "That Guy"). The English language is already one of the hardest because of said hominims and exeptions and shit.

All right, the rest of your post aside, I think you're wrong about this being about comprehension skills.

I care about what I write, so I take the time and effort to make sure my posts are comprehensible. Otherwise, this post would probably be sumthin liek this lul and wile im shur u cann figure out wat im typeing, lets b honest it dont look 2 gud lul.

A post like that tells me that the writer is either not too bright or doesn't care enough about what they're posting to bother following even the most basic rules of grammar and spelling; trying to have a nuanced discussion with someone who doesn't care is a waste of time.

[small]That being said, I've only taken someone to task for poor grammar once, and it's because he sent me emails 7h47 w3r3 wr1773n l13k th15.[/small]

It's hard to tell what that kind of person is when on the internet, maybe English isn't their first language, or maybe they got a crap education, or any education at all cuz they had to spend their childhood selling cabbages near the zebra crossing to fund their dad's drug habit.

I'll admit secretly I'm wishing they'd do better, but I never say/type it to anyone's face to L2Type.

Oh btw, I was on ebay looking for a new phone, check this out.

Meh I think bitching at people for spelling wrong is pointless. On the other hand you did anoy me by using "Am" instead of is. I guess i'm a grammer nazi....
Yeah, sorry about that.
That was partly a topical joke, partly a ploy to hook people in.

Frankly i do find text speak and l33t quite annoying so i am glad to have people trying to uphold proper language but doing it in a derogatory way is often counterproductive
