GTA IV hands down. The older ones were ridiculously silly. In a bad way.

Vice City because I felt sooo bad ass taking over crime/drug lords by myself with Miami Vice playing in the back.
Vice City, because it just had such a fun-and-sunny atmosphere to it. It seemed like a light-hearted gang-war, where the others struck a higher note of realism. The real world just isn't as fun to ...shoot...people...in...huh, that sounds incriminating.
I was surprised that they dropped all of the San Andreas stuff from GTAIV though. It wasn't great and it was kind of macho-ridiculous, but I'd expected it to be carried over in some form.

I've probably had the most fun in San Andreas on PS2. It was a silly, over-the-top game. It has same-screen multiplayer that provided hours of fun.
Then there was the "pedestrians riot" cheat. Damn that was fun. I really wish GTA4 had that. I miss things like carjackers and random people with guns.

SO MANY HILARIOUS CHARACTERS AND MISSIONS! So many silly bugs, so many vehicles, so much landmass to explore, so many hours on the story, so much potential for random chaos.

it's probably almost unianimous that San Andreas and Vice City are the best 2
Vice city has the music, the cars, the clothes and the feel of the greatest decade
whereas San Andreas had the depth, the characters, the customisation and quite frinkly was longer, had more side quests such as horseshoe collecting, it had skill meters allowing you to feel the growth of CJ as you went on in the game with him, was more varied in it's locations, more varied in it's vehicles and to me, was not just the best GTA, but was one of the best games of all time

while Vice City is one of the best for its "miami vice" feel, i have to say San Andreas was more fun, altough it didnt do anything in the area of "story" VC did it better, San Andreas felt more like your little playgrownd... the size of 4 frikken huge islands and one of them was a god damn forest that if you ever ever ever ever crashed your car in it you were stuck walking for 30 minutes to the nearest frikkend road, had to wait 15 minutes so that something that barely resembled a car passed by and another few minnutes trying to catch the blasted thing
