You forgot the 2 longest running MMO's still in operation, Everquest (10 years) and Ultima Online (12 years I think.)

You also skipped City of Heroes/Villains.

Wow, not many to choose from in your poll. Anyway I say Everquest, or maybe Star Wars Galaxies (in its old glory days).

Runescape.

No really, the quests are so freaking cool. Graphics and Combat are... Meh. But the quests are always, ALWAYS fun.

I didn't play it back then, but I heard it was awesome. I loved how the game let itself evolve with jobs and money making. It sounded very real to how I imagine it would work. Not just anyone could be a Jedi, and it was a badge of honor to be able to do so.

I voted for LOTR Online on accident. :p

I voted for WoW because I thought it was the best among the choices. You can't really deny that WoW is at the very least an average game with its 11 million customers...

It makes me sad to vote for WoW because its really not that great, it is however good all round, and in terms of content and lack of bugs its the old and has had far more time to perfect itself than the others.

War does pvp better
Eve does economy better
Lotr does titles better

But wow is atleast good in all areas.

Off topic - Currently playing Eve and quite enjoying it, i think i must've gone insane.

5 votes for Runescape, while I'm the only one who voted Guild Wars? Blasphemy. I understand WoW being in front. Even if I sincerely dislike WoW, I can see and understand why people enjoy it so much.
Here's why I love Guild Wars:
1) The community. Even if you have your standard fare of MMO idiots and jerks, the "good" players really shine. They're helpful, friendly, fun to play with, know the game inside out and are very generous.
2) If I don't feel like grouping, I'd get my henchmen to help me out, or even better, my Heroes.
3) The art style is very unique, and the graphics have aged very well. Also, the best armor designs I've ever seen in an MMO.
4) The world feels alive. As someone who has Master'd several tabletop games, this game uses all the right techniques for making the world seem alive. Small, petty conflicts between factions (for instance, the merchants and the bankers), NPC's with personalities (GASP!), Cooperative Missions are amazing to play, especially with a good group.
5) This one I'll never tire of repeating: Skill. This games doesn't reward time spent playing, it rewards pure Skill, strategy, teamwork, and understanding the mechanics of the game. Also, PvP is well organized, with frequent tournaments, LOTS of modes. All WoW fans saying WoW's PvP is better can go suck it play Guild Wars.
6) Instanced play. Some people hate it, I personally love it. It's a more self-contained experience: just you and your group kicking ass.
7) Vanity. No game puts a greater focus on your own vanity and ego. I don't care if you're the best player in the world, if you don't have a rare minipet, special armour and look absolutely stunning in your armour, it's all for nothing.

Voted EVE because of the technology they use to get 350,000 players on one server.

Would have voted City of Heroes, Guild Wars, or 'other' if not.

City of Heroes/Villains, because it's one of the only MMO's to give a clear sense of customisation, the community isn't nearly as bad as a lot of MMO's, the only things you HAVE to buy to get better are enhancements, instead of random pieces of clothing which turn you into a patchwork quilt. PLUS, the clothing you CAN buy/obtain give nothing other than an aesthetic boost. You can also write your own backstory, the PVP missions are fun, and the Mission Architect was a genius idea. Finally an MMO which gives the players a way to make detailed story-arcs, rather than being forced to play what their under-payed and bitter writers come up with.

Totally not a fan boy.

WoW. It's balanced, full, fun and social. It has, in my mind, the best PvP (not traditional PvP, but in terms of application and viability and sheer fun it kicks the pants of even WAR.) and the most engaging and beautiful PvE. Gear and content is never stale and you never have down-time.

It's the best at being what an MMO should be. Hence, the best.

Now if you don't mind, I need to drive a tank to storm a beach so I can knock down buildings while an army of my buddies storm the fortifications. After which I will turn into Dudepeel (wolverine deadpool) and teleport from foe to foe and unleash an unholy torrent of hateful vengeance before throwing knives like some kind of bladed hurricane at all my foes. After which I will dissapear in a puff of smoke and slink away to do it all again.

WoW: Dreams come true.

As its not on the list I will do my usual and say DDO here instead. Being the only mmo to date to deviate from the wow clone syndrome thats afflicting all other mmo's it gets my vote. I will admit it could be better and has its flaws but I still prefer dungeons and dragons online to any other mmo I've ever played (which is most). Its unique combat and complex character creation/progression has put it head and shoulders over any of the competition.
