Jump in with him obviously =P

Call the cops because the law may judge your actions as 'extreme' then you'll be sharing a cell with him.

For those who voted 'shoot through door' I ask this: What if it was your friend, family, spouse? I mean how would you really know if you didn't look?
they should know better than to break in my damn house.
I take it you are on bad terms with your friends/family?
If not, let me know so I can avoid you in person =P

Call the cops in a panic, leave the house until they arrive.

I don't get why the OP calls the man a "stupid criminal" while admitting that he may have been suffering from psychosis and had no criminal intent. It's not at all unheard of for people with dementia to be so unaware of reality to forget which house is theirs.

If I saw someone in my house who was doing something like showering, my first assumption would be "This person probably needs mental help." I also don't see what going in and shooting the guy does from a personal safety standpoint that leaving the area wouldn't.
Firstly, I'm referring to his likelihood that he gets lumped in with some kind of "stupid criminals" list. Because really, breaking into someone's house is bad enough without also asking the cops to hold your hand while you do it because you got cold feet. He could need mental help, or he could just be stoned out of his mind. Either way, his intent still wasn't clear until the cops were on their way. For anyone else, that's leaving way too much to chance.

Also, I don't really understand the "a person who's forced his way into your house clearly needs assistance" mentality, especially as a gut reaction. Why should anyone assume that a shower was the only thing the guy wanted when he broke in? How recklessly naive.

I'd strip down and get in there with him, wrap my arms around him, and whisper sweetly into his ear, "Glad you could make it."

What I'd actually do is pull the deadliest weapon I have, beat down the door, and kill him immediately if he's armed or beat the shit out of him if he isn't.

Call the cops and grab my crowbar. I can go Gordan Freeman on him if he tries to leave before the police arrive.

what's wrong with quickly opening the door, tossing in a toaster (plugged in, of course) and wait for the tasty smell of burning human?

why wasn't that an option??

In my Mind:Tell him sorry that my shower sucks and to try else where

IRL: Either shit my self in terror or ask him to leave... then shit myself in terror.

Well clearly this is just showing that the education system in any country is failing.

More towards the poll, I'd talk to them first. There's a good bit of home robberies committed by people who are first timers or genuinely dont want someone to get hurt (usually cause they know that will mean more jail time). So I'd talk to them and see if that can sedate them. I'll be honest, if the person broke in, but calmly left and left everyone with me, i'd let them go. I'd get the locks changed, but I'd let them go.

However, if they cant be reasoned with, you subdue. NOT kill, NOT maim, NOT disable, SUBDUE. Then call the cops. It looks bad if you beat someone, even if it is in home defense. There's no reason that in your own house where you hold the advantage of home field, you shouldnt be able to subdue someone.
Yeah. Subdue. That sounds reasonable. I mean everyone in the world can easily subdue everyone else. The only reason for violence is of course the evils in peoples heart.

Well back here on earth some people don't have the option to subdue others, and if force into a confrontation have to do whatever it takes to defend themselves.

OT: Should it have happened as in the story, where the person locked themselves in the bathroom I would let them stay there, and call the cops. Let the cops take care of it. Wouldn't stop me from arming myself and letting them know its safest for them if they stay in there till the cops arrive.

And your logic reeks of vigilantism. As cool as Batman is, the average person isn't as qualified as him. I actually know the cops where I live fairly well, and believe it or not, they're competent, intelligent people! Shocking, right? Honestly, best to let the trained professionals deal with this, no matter how much you hate "the man."

Eh, maybe it comes with training. But thats what you should do anyway, at least thats what the few police officers I've talked to have told me. They hate a bloody scene and arguing if the case had obessive force used in it. BUt like I said, there's no reason you cant subdue someone, rather then just beat them to a bloody unconscious pulp.

Wait till he's gotten out of the shower, gotten his clothes on and then attack him with a buckets of mud, paint, syrup and Bacardi 151 and kick him out of my house.
And then I would set him on fire.

Call the police. Normally I'd fuck up someone who broke into my house but if he's showering then A, he isn't stealing anything, and B, he's nude and I'd rather not get into physical confrontation with a naked man.
