Topic done to death, rezzed and killed again.

I'll say what I always say: You can take any gender to play as and someone will still find a way to insult you for it.

As a guy:
-You play a girl. Get a lot of stick (hence this thread)
-You play a guy. ("LOL UR GHEY YOU STARE AT A MAN WHILE U PLAY LOL")

The possiblities are endless.?
Be honest. Has anybody actually done that to you?
Once, when I was trialling WoW. I lost most faith in humanity that day and became a cynic.

I always paly female versions when the male versions are ugly(draenei WOW)
or if there are benefits in the game for being female( black widow perk, fallout 3)

I'd rather kill things as a huge badass paragon of testosterone than a skimpy girl. Plus I feel sort of awkward, like if I played a girl character, I could give some desparate guy the wrong idea. And then I could get hit on and make him feel bad when he found out I was really a guy....

Online games I exclusively play male characters. I prefer awesome full plate and heavy battle-axe over dual daggers and leather half-armor exposing most of the stereotypically (to the point of boredom) sexy female characters anyway.

Offline I tend to switch depending what I'm in the mood for. My male character in fallout 3 is a sneaky bastard while my female is a melee/big guns/asskicking specialist.

I've noticed that if there are guys playing as girl characters, it is usually for one of three reasons.
1) They want to mooch off of the guy populace that want to supply the "girl" with stuff to make "her" life easier and to steal the one "girl" off the internet from the other female-starved men of the gaming nation.
2) They don't want to stare at a man's derriere for the entire duration of their play-time.
3) Sometimes playing a girl character is more fun (i.e games where the class the player wants is strictly female).

that is about the size of it

Nope.
The only time i can think of doing this was on Guild Wars, as male Nightfall Monks looked crap, so made a female one.

I'd add in 4) Because the character really deserves to be female.

Chun Li wouldn't have worked as a bloke.

I can understand that though. Even if I was a guy, I would not play as a Night Elf male. Those guys just look retarded.. with biceps bigger than their torso.

Personally, I always play as male character except when I have to play as a woman. Another reason why I dont play female characters at all is "the change" women made in video games over the past years(not only in games ;movies for example). Close to every charming female character was replaced with a lunatic or a hardcore kong-fu b. who as far as we know normally has no back story which can discribe her fighting skills or is simply done by saying "she is strong". The best example for a hardcore woman in movies in probably "Ultra violett". If you haven't watched it you are lucky.

Another aspect is probably the customization of female characters or to put it simple : giant tits. For the best example check out Lara Crofts figure from Tomb Raider 1 for ps1 and the game nowadays (something like ( ) ( ) to ( ) ( ) ). Do those proportions magically compensate for the lack of muscle or why do they normally look that way?(maybe if they used some kind of tits-tackle....) World of Warcraft ,thankfully, didn't go that way but there are too many online games that did

I personally don't get the idea that you have to pick a character of your own gender ot play a game. For example, I don't really want stick to an ideal version of myself when I can use my imagination and play something else entirely.

Online I never play as a girl. Ever. But in games like KOTOR or Mass Effect I have been known to play as a girl just to get the whole experience. Especially in Mass Effect because the female voice does a better job, imo. (but not THAT much better)

Oh yeah, its always an upsetting time when you are trying to create an actual likeness of yourself in a game. "Your not that tall", "Yeah i am", "no your not... your not that thin either", "fine". etc.

I'm generally more comfortable playing a male character. I have played female characters in games on occasion - like the original Diablo where you had to be a female to be a rogue, for example - but I have never played a female character in an MMO. The different in treatment between male characters and female characters (regardless of who is sitting at the keyboard) can be pretty awkward.

I always play as a guy because I just find it a little creepy when someone is playing as the opposite gender in an MMO.

I don't play online, but in games that let me select my sex, I typically start with male (my own) and if possible try to model the character after myself. Subsequent play-throughs, I'll choose female for a sense of variety. In the case of Fallout 3, now, my first character was male, second was female, third male, and my fourth is going to be female once again (each of them have different alignments/skill sets/play styles, too).
