If I pick a slightly feminine class, like a healer of some sort, I'll roll off as a lady.
As a dude who works as a health care assistant, let me be the first to say I hear your mum picks slightly feminine classes.

A couple other explanations:
Nerdier folks who play video games have no control over women in real life. In a video game, they choose female characters so for once in their life, a female's actions will make sense to them.
Low self-esteem: If you don't like who you are, you'll probably not choose to play someone like yourself.
I almost always play females in games because I just like them better. I'm a male every other time in my life, playing a female in a game is a nice change. The only time I played a male by choice was in Mass Effect, and that's because the character I was making (single-class soldier) really didn't fit the gender, plus there was overlap with Ashley.

In most MMOGs the male characters look gay and the female characters look HOT. I'm not gay. Go figure.

I rather look at the sexy female bladedancer's ass all the time in L2, rather than the sexy male knight. Other than that, I use to play my novel's main character in other games, who is mostly a cross between Duke Nukem and Max Payne with a chip on his shoulder.

Yea, I have issues.

I play as a guy online because I want my avatar to be me. My actions are kinder to other players and I feel relaxed if I'm playing as me, I think its because I'm escaping normal life so all my worries go away.
Isn't that the point o games, to relax?

I'm nearly always forced to play as a dude, which isn't cool unless it's Link, Voodoo Vince, Conker or Tommy Vercetti. I prefer to make my character look like me, because I enjoy seeing a ridiculously pretty version of me kicking some butt.

Two reasons:
#1. The male characters sometimes look ridiculous.
#2. Variety.

Online if I'm only allowed one I'm likly a male (Can't think of a time that hasn't happened) but if I need a secondary character then it's up in the air but I never parade the fact that the character is a female to anyone.

On the whole, I play a bloke. But sometimes - thrice so far, twice in LOTRO and once in a PBEM RPG - I've played female characters to see if I can. But then I've been playing RPGs, both pen-and-paper and computer-based - since 1989, so... It's an interesting change of perspective rather than anything else.

Given the choice I prefer male characters, I like my characters to be like me (but way better) in my games, but if it's a game like diablo where classes can only be female and I want to play that character... well I don't really have a choice do I?

I generally keep my character the same gender as me, the only exception to this being in RP games. There I'll have a healthy mix of both male and female characters. This is particularly true in WoW, where I play on an RP server. I don't play females to mooch off socially-deprived male players, or for aesthetic appeal. I play them because they make for interesting RP.

And because of that, on WoW I've got a ranger who works for an enigmatic group, the granddaughter and self-proclaimed heir of Magatha Grimtotem; and in D&D I've got a traveling and energetic elven wizard who has no other motive for adventure other than "That place looks neat. I want to go there."

Ok, I confess. I just started Age of Conan and picked a female Avatar. mostly because it's something better to look at for the next however many months of my life I'm throwing away. but also its something different and more interesting to roleplay. so far I've noticed several different npc conversation elements relating to gender. and I paraphrase: "oh, that such-and-such is a wild one, I'd like to tame her under the covers if you follow me... don't look so mad, you're pretty too" etc.
also it makes running around nude in the game slightly more enjoyable on another level than the plain humour of a naturist adventurer (don't judge me. the female armour available in these games bareley covers them anyway).

Interacting with other players is interesting though. I havent been offerered free stuff yet, but I wonder if people assume what my gender is in RL. only had one person ask me flat out. and I don't think he was bothered.

next time I pick a female av, I'll name her "Guyenne Arr'El" or "Is'Reelie Ad-Ood" to hopefully clear up confusion. AOC only allows one word names though I think.

for an offline game I will use my own gender (male) first and then after I have beaten it I will play again as a girl.

for an online game I will do pretty much the same exept they dont really have an end so I play through most of the lvs then switch.

I'm a girl who occasionally plays a male. Usually only if I've been messed with coz I'm a girl. On UT I had to switch names and everything because I had this creep trying to chat me up everytime that I logged on. But I generally prefer to play girls.

just tossing my general opinion out there. I think it's a little weird when people switch genders online for RPG's IMO. Because, it breaks the RP flow IMO. Unless, you're roleplaying a girl and then you probably should go for some pssychiatric help. But hey, that's my opinion.

I sometimes do but i don't normally play MMORPGs. I did play Star Wars Galaxies (and still would if people actually played that) and I did have a female character. But that was just for the hell of it. Maybe people just switch genders to see how others will react to them. It'd defiantly be an interesting experiment to find out why people do this and what the aftermath of it is.

I'll play as whatever, depending on my mood @ the time of creation. Take MMO's for example, some females play as males to give themselves a leg up and be considered "equal", not that thats a good or bad thing its just what they want to do, personaly if someone says they really are female/male then i take them at there word. I have alot of friends from LOTRO on my MSN, but i still call them by there avatars name.......Is that weird?

I've gone a round or two with this issue before. I've got two friends from my area that I play WoW with. Each has played a female character.

Friend 1 played as an Alliance female draenei mage. Whenever people approached him in the game as to whether or not he was a real girl or not, he lied. DOn't know why, he might have just liked the help. Eventually he had a 'boyfriend' that was about 13 or so (F1 being 18). He kept up the charade for quite some time. He even stooped as low as to 'cyber' his boyfriend with his character. I once asked him something along the lines of 'Whaa? Why would you do that?' to which he replied '... well I know what guys like ...' Eventually he felt guilty enough to tell the guy and his guild that the person they had all been so flirtatious around was actually a guy. If I remember the boy's reaction right, it was something like "... wat? Srysly? ... omg". Friend 1 deleted the female character and plays male characters now. I don't know if he still cybers anymore.

Friend 2 played his first character, a male blood elf paladin to 70 for about a year. He was very successful with that character and frequently raided with a high-end guild. In the downtime he played on his alts. He tried a few characters for a day or two then deleted them. The ones that he held onto were all female. He currently has three blood elf females (rogue, mage, deathknight) and one human female (warrior). Presently, his male character is retired and he plays female characters exclusively.

Then there's me. I have never played a female character nor do I ever intend to. I like to represent myself through my avatar in a way I can identify with. Friend 2 and I have gotten into a debate recently about playing female characters. He seems to think that I should play a female character and that it's weird that I don't. In return, I ask him to explain specifically why he plays a female character. He says that he doesn't mislead people as he's very open about saying he's a guy whenever some random player does a /assgrab in a crowded city. And although he once candidly said that "They're so hot I can fap all day to my characters!", he claims that he doesn't play them to just stare at their ass. He was never able to give me a solid answer and just meekly dismissed the conversation saying "Well, I just like playing my character, that's all." He has never made another male character.

So I don't understand the cross dressing demographic. Some are perverts (Friend 1) and some just like the look of them (Friend 2). I don't understand how people should feel that they need to justify their sexuality by forcing themselves to stare at a female character's backside all game. I sure don't stare at my male character's backside with man-lust. I understand that a character is a character, and I just choose to see mine as a representation of myself rather than a perky tool to drive around.
