And yet Guild Wars didn't -dent- WoW. A lot of people who bought it, never played it again. Current players are considerably less, less than a million.

Consider that that's 6 million total paid accounts made vs over 12 million current subscribers which doesn't account for total paid accounts.

That number is meaningless in a discussion of whether GW2 will be a 'wow-killer'. Nor is that even an appropriate term? GW1 wasn't even a WoW-tickler.
That was kind of my point. GW and GW2's success is determined by units sold, not by subscribers. Because there are no subscribers. Their model revolves around people enjoying the game for as long as they want to, then buying expansions and playing them for as long as they want. People are actually expected to leave the game when they get bored of it, because ArenaNet isn't earning most of their money through subscription fees. Their goal is to make the game enjoyable enough that people will buy the expansions. It's like an offline game in that way.

By the way, where did you get your numbers that considerably less than a million people play GW1?

Anyway, this is what I and others have been trying to say. WoW and GW2 aren't even in competition, because people can easily play both games. That was how GW1 and 2 were designed.

The sheer number of people who play WoW, is enough to completely steamroll Guild Wars. Its futile to examine this with a poll, but if you want to argue from a critical standpoint, thats completely different. Put simply, dont be impressed by the poll results.

I don't think anything can dethrone World of Warcraft at this point. It's like the Magic: The Gathering of MMORPGs.

The short answer to this kind of questions will be "show me how this new fantasy MMORPG is different from WoW and I'll tell you why it's going to fail". There's a good reason why everything in WoW is just the way it is, this reason being because it works!

When it comes to quests, those are actually an alternative to grinding mobs for leveling. To get a taste what a real grind feels like one should try Lineage. As for end-game grinding in raids or the arena, well, it is the essential part of any MMORPG as there would be absolutely nothing the players can do without it.

After all when I want to enjoy a good story without experiencing tedious gameplay I get myself an offline game. Or a good book.

RIFT Already won. Both lose.
Isnt rift just WoW with shinier graphics? People are not going to leave WoW to play wow, even if there are a few mechanical tweaks.
Have you played RIFT? I am the worlds biggest Anti-WoW person EVER, and I'm loving the shit out of rift right now. It's really fun, I highly recommend it.

I havent, but the stuff that I've looked at just seems that it's really similar (keep in mind the honeymoon period of MMOs where they seem amazing at first but end up being really similar).

From a numbers point of view, if its too similar people aint gonna play it, just because they're heavily invested in WoW, and theres no free trial so that'll damage any subscription base from arising as well.

I'd quite happly try it, but I'm not spending £30 to potentially end up playing a tweaked WoW, which is how I'm sure a lot of people feel.

You know, there's a reason the trailer for Rift says "We aren't in Azeroth anymore".

It's because if it didn't say that you'd mistake it for a WoW trailer.

Awesome, and a bit off-topic, given that the topic is 'Will GW2 kill WoW?'

Besides, this is a thread about whether one believes GW2 is a WoW-Killer or not. Do I believe they will coexist? Absolutely. Do I believe Gw2 can -dent- WoW? Not a frikken chance.

what about chuck norris
Have you ever seen them both in one place at the same time?
Yes, and he was roundhousing its face off, he was about to kill it but felt sorry for WoW and it's desire to suck souls into its gorge of greed but walked away saying that wasn't worth the effort to kill.
That was a Wow robot to divert suspicion.
So WoW is trying to commit suicide by programming a robot in Chuck Norris clothing to kill Kramer in order for it to be considered murder rather than suicide?

NCSoft Producer.

ArenaNet Developer. Geez if your going to insult the game at least get the developer right. Also ArenaNet only developed GW1, not Tabula Rasa.

I was already corrected earlier in this thread, heres my reply if you are lazy to look.

It's not made by NCsoft, it's made by ArenaNet. Like the original GW, which has had quite a respectable level of both success and acclaim. NCsoft is only publishing it, and they're giving ANet pretty much complete freedom over development. They aren't even giving them a deadline.

Also, ANet has repeatedly said that the game will come out "when it's ready." They're going to polish the thing with a toothbrush before they let it out the doors. They've definitely been keeping an eye on the failures of previous MMOs, as evidenced by the fact that they canceled public beta tests planned for 2008 because they realized that most people view betas as demos now.
Well, in that case, lets hope they won't get pressured by NCsoft in any way. It would be great to have something fresh out there which isn't same bag of marbles under a different name.

Personally though, every time I see an MMO tag slapped near a franchise of my interest, I just turn the page. Played too much, too many, to care or have any hopes for the genre to change in any significant way. Saying it here just in case, so peopel dont think I'm a fanboy or a hater ;)
Also, I never said that ArenaNet was responsible for Tabula Rasa.
I messed up some facts about GW, yes, my apologies, but I have an excuse (who doesn't?).
Original GW was pretty boring, and suffered from the same problems as the games developed by NCsoft which I mentioned in my original post, hence why I wrongfully assumed that NCsoft was directly involved, them being a publisher and all.

Just personal experiences and opinions, not insults, forums are here so we can express those, am I correct?

I know there are a lot of die hard WoW fans out there, but WoW (at least in my eyes) is kinda dull. It's' travel to point X kill this many (insert name of enemies here), and you either go raiding for gear to do MORE raiding or grinding(grind is the bane of gaming!). I know there are some out there that will argue against me, but it's just what I believe. I play Guild Wars and I'm excited for Guild Wars 2! I think it has a chance of taking down WoW, if not that than at least being able to have an equal amount of players as WoW. Now, before you decide to crucify Guild Wars 2, PLEASE look at the website(guildwars2.com) and gameinformer.com, it has some serious potential, innovation, and beauty(GOD it's beautiful!). So will GW2 be the fabled WoW killer, will WoW still reign supreme, or will it be a draw between the two games?

If you are unaware of the differences between WoW and GW2 please check the website below:

http://www.killtenrats.com/2011/01/14/world-of-warcraft-players-guide-to-guild-wars-2/

Vote GW2, WoW, tie and say why.
Making VS threads is frowned upon and making VS threads that are a thinly disguised "I hate this game because I'm a fanboy of another series" even more so.

I wish I could report people like you for trolling.
I actually really apologize for that post. I was in a bad mood at the time I wrote it, and just in a really ranty state. See, I have a deep-down hatred for WoW. And as I started to explain my position on this topic it got out of hand.

To explain my view in a more civilized manner: I think that Guild Wars 2 is going to be an awesome game, but those who play WoW like WoW for what it is, and most people are attracted to it because no other MMORPG's have the same features (and those that try always fail). Guild Wars 2 is just not going to draw the same audience.

Any game intended to be a WoW-killer is guaranteed to fail, because WoW has already had some 7 or 8 years to perfect its qualities. But if a game doesn't try to compete with WoW for its own audience, then it's guaranteed to get fewer people BUT it's also not doomed to fail either. That is to say, at the end of the day, Guild Wars 2 is going to rock, but it's not going to have as many players as WoW.
perfectly understood. Incidentally I voted for Guild Wars II, because I chose to interpret the pole as asking which would be of better quality. I've only played WoW for about over a year and half, but I quit only a few days ago when it at last became too stale and familiar to bare. I'm bored to death of WoW, and cataclysm has killed its personality. I've been looking forward to Guild Wars II and the next generation of MMOs for a long time.
