Do you have to play Half Life 1 in order to understand it or can it be played solo?
I'll clue you in on some of the important details, which will help you understand a few parts of Half-Life 2 better.
Gordon Freeman is physicist from MIT who, while helping to conduct an experiment, opens a portal into a Alien world called Xen and the aliens, of course, have no better idea than to destroy all humans in sight. This happens in a facility called Black Mesa. At the end of the game, a mysterious man in a suit (called G-Man by the fans) tells him that he has work to do.

I'd like Valve to finish the Half Life series. Really want to know what happens to Gordon Freeman.

As much as I enjoyed Portal, more games would devalue the idea. Sometimes, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Portal is one of them, in my opinion...

I recently remembered that I never finished Episode 2 (so I am doing it now), but judging from that game and the other games Episode 3 for sure. I'm not sure what they could do with Portal beside making it online multiplayer and adding the gravity gun and stuff to hurl at each other in addition to the portal gun. That and a map editor would make one of the best multiplayer games--no story please, just fun.

I believe theres a website somewhere that explains what happens in the first one so you have a grasp on the story if your just playing the second one, I'm too lazy to search for it right now. Anyways its not too complicated, I played HL2 first without knowing anything and still loved it, then when back and played HL1, then played HL2 again. =P

Probably Portal 2. Portal is an incredible game, but all the time I was playing it I was thinking "You know, this feels like an experiment" (pun not intended). It was such, such an awesome game, one of my favourite of all time, but it still just felt like a taster for something even more epic.

Theres so many great machanics you could add to Portal. Take the Portal gun, add everyday guns and you got some fucking awesome combat. What about changing the Portals size, so that when an object is put in one Portal it comes out the other one a different size. Portal with water? What would would happen if you put a Portal under water, made a really small portal, then placed it on the wall. It would create a jet.

Portal Multiplayer anyone? That would be fucking epic. Take away normal normal weapons in deathmatch which causes people to be creative about there murder, using the enviroment and portals to take them out (bombs, cubes and turrets could be scattered around). What about races in Portal? Or tag? Or capture the Companion Cube?

Story is about the only point where I really don't have any ideas. That's up to Valve, and I hope they could create something just as clever and hilarious.

I'm very excited for Episode 3, it's true. But mostly just because I want to see how it all ends (if it does). But I know it's just going to be more of the same. Thats certainly not a bad thing but still.

Nah, the game stands up by itself just fine, but if you play HL1 a lot of the little references will make more sense.

Play Half Life 1 damnit!

I'm more interested in seeing Episode 3 (sometime this year would be nice) and going by the end of episode 2, it looks like there will be some Portal/Aperture Science crossover anyway. Plus, we may get to play through that scenario detailed in Raising the Bar, if the location of the Borealis is anything to go by...:)

I don't think theres going to be a portal 2. Portal is just so... PORTAL... I don't think you can do it without a serious case of awful sequelitis. We've had one map pack, I expect MORE portal, not portal again.

But, I don't know what that research ship hinted at in Episode 2 was exactly, but I wager 5 bucks that glados is still alive, and in that ship. PORTAL doesn't really have a story arc like HL2, but they will work it into the greater half life universe for sure.

You can play it solo, although there are some things that require playing through Half-Life 1 to understand.

Focus on Episode 3 and have it be the last installment, so that way they won't have to torture everyone with, "When's it coming out?" or, "Will it ever come out?"

I mean, if you're gonna do episodes, focus on that instead of other projects. If television got away with what Valve has been doing, no one will watch it.

Okay not to sound like a graphics whore or anything but come [http://www.forest.impress.co.jp/article/1999/03/03/game25_half-life1.jpg] on [http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/screenshots/gs/news/010608/dmc_screen002.jpg]. Freaking Quake back on the PSX looked better than that. Maybe if I can find some decent retextures...
Those pictures have been taken at a pretty bad resolution. You can ramp it up to about 1600x1200 and turn on all sorts of other things to make it look better, but you've got to remember that it's more than a decade old and it's running using a modified version of the Quake 2 engine.

Anyway, the remake may be out sometime over the next few months and if you still haven't gotten around to playing the original (which you should,) here's a vid for the remake which is coming out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lul60ixy_40

Episode 3. I found Portal vastly overrated, and while it was decent, I have no interest in a continuation.

Portal 2, Portal I found really entertaining and some parts quite challenging, the Half-Life games bore me I have every single one and haven't played more than 2 hours on each I don't have any incentive to complete them..
