Poll: Half Life 3: Do You Still Think It's Ever Coming?

I know this isn't exactly a new topic for debate, but it feels like it's been a while since there's even been a decent fake rumor or "leaked HL3 teaser", interest in the series is waning, and there's still zero actual evidence that the game was ever being worked on at all.

As depressing as it is for fans of the series, I think at this point one really has to question if Half-Life 3[footnote]or Half-Life 2: Episode 3, or whatever valve chooses to name it[/footnote] is ever coming at all or if the series has just been left 4 dead[footnote]I am aware other's have used this pun before, go ahead and sue me.[/footnote].

So what do you guys think? Am I being pessimistic? Realistic? Does anyone even still care anymore?

Personally, while I wouldn't count out the possibility, I'm very, very doubtful.

I'm fairly sure that they're making it, but not with a great deal of priority as other projects like Steam are way more important. The best we can hope for is that it's a relatively decent game, and that the ending ties things up nicely & Valve then refuse to make any sequels.

Something Half-Life related will undoubtably be released one day. Whether it's Episode 3, an actaul sequel 3, or something totally different set in the same universe, I don't know.

We're at the mercy of Valve's whim.

Another 5 years and it will be definitely be released. Give or take.

Imo, they are having such a hard time with it due to the unexpected popularity of Portal. Now they gotta juggle two radically different games set in the same world, happening at the same and at dangerously close proximity. I believe that Valve can pull it off, but they need time and to handle both franchises with extreme care.

I think we should hear about it in an year or so probably. The time gap between HL1 and HL2 was 6 years. or was it 5? and since episode 2 came out in 2007, and with the rumour of steambox, it makes sense that Valve launches a full installment as its launch product. I do hope that its a complete game when it comes out, an episode would be a huge letdown.

Surely it won't come along before they have a new engine to show off both products, problem is Valve isn't pressed for time on any part of that, also they are far more interested in Steam rather then games right now so this may end up suspended for decades.

Of course it will come. It's not like valve are in financial trouble, it just seems they got distracted by their other projects and Steam. It's just going to take a loooooooooooooong time.

I think it'll come eventually. It'll probably be the end of Half Life though, or at least Gordon Freeman, it'll wrap things up and give a nice, satisfying conclusion to this adventure we all shared.

I doubt it will be Episode 3, as that'd be a bit of a joke. I imagine it will be a fully fledged sequel and on next gen, or maybe the flagship title for the SteamBox or whatever it will be called.

I am in agreement with others that due to the long delay and the amount of hype people have for the series, that it will either be amazing or a huge disappointment. Only people who are not fans of the series as a whole are likely to have an opinion in between, as they won't have as many expectations.

I think the question is less when is it going to be released, but more, will it be worth the wait? Personally I lean towards no. Outside of TF2 I was never a big fan of Valve games, and I have a feeling that nothing that they can do with Half Life 3/Half Life 2 Episode 3 could possibly ever life up to the hype, or just be worth the wait in general. I have no problem with Valve, but I think they drew themselves into a corner here.

I expect it to come eventually, with a little more hope for the near future now that the next generation is upon us. Maybe it will be great, but I really don't see it living up to the expectations people would have for it as a result of Half-Life 2. I don't expect it to be Duke Nukem Forever bad, but I seriously doubt it will be as well-received as the first two games. Perhaps, though, people's expectations have dropped enough, given the time since Episode 2 and the number of bad games coming out of development hell, that expectations will be low enough for it to actually meet or exceed those expectations.

I don't know why people are so keen for this game anyway. I don't mean because the previous two were over-rated, they were very good in their day, but the story for Half Life never particularly grabbed me so I'm not holding out for a conclusion, so I'd rather see Valve move on with other projects.

It's win/win for them either way though, if they do release, cause whether it's Duke Nukem Forever 2 or a golden gift from God, it's still going to fly off the shelves.

I think it's a given that Half Life 3 will be released at *some* point - probably tied in with some tittilating new physics or graphics engine or something.

Half Life 2 Episode 3? I'm not holding my breath.

I think they will be concentrating with all these free to play rubbish for the next several years, so I wouldn't hold my breath for HL3

I think it is, but it will most likely come out some time after the completion of Source Engine v2 at some stage. I honestly think it wont be well received compared to Half-Life 2 or god forbid Half-Life 1 because after waiting for so long the hype will have affected people's opinions of the released game.

Valve have truly fucked themselves with this though. They shouldn't of waited so long (if it ever does come). Not only will it not live up to the hype at all, I can easily see it being the most pirated game ever.
Damn it, ninja'd again!

At this point I'm kind of expecting Valve to just drop it on us out of the fucking blue one day. No real warning, just "Hey guys, just thought you might want to know Half Life 3 comes out next week," or something to that effect.
