I agree wholeheartedly with this. I never got attacthed to any of the characters while I was playing the game. That led to me not really caring about the story either. They just didn't draw me in like I guess they did to everyone else. A small gripe really, but still.TB_Infidel said:I would disagree. The characters were realistic, but also very forgettable and as Gordon is a silent hero, there is limited interaction with these characters. When compared to Halo 2 which came out in the same month, it felt worn and dated for a new game, and apart from a gravity engine, it did not do anything special.NoMoreSanity said:It has great realistic characters along with excellent gameplay. Gravity Gun. Best weapon ever.
But then that's just my opinion and im sure people will disagree for good reasons.

I never knew you could pick up toilets. This opens up a whole new world for me! (Melodic opera music as a holy light shines down from above)Sightless Wisdom said:Well I personally used to be on the "this game is pathetically average compared to the hype it gets" side, but I played through the entire second game plus episode one and two. After that I have to say it's one of the more solid games out there. And solid really is the key word here, it has a fairly good engine, the graphics were great at the time of it's release and still aren't terrible. The characters are believable and very memorable. The story...well from what we've seen so far, it's not entirely that origional but still interesting none the less.
Then there is the part that makes a game "good" for most people: the gameplay. It has six basic weapon "slots" each with it's own fairly generic gun or explosive; pistols smgs, assault rifles, grenades etc. The major addition to this otherwise generic weapon set is of course the gravity gun. Hilariously entertaining, and undeniably helpful. With this gun there is always ammo, because everything is it's ammo. Especially sawblades and toilets. And then there is one of the most rediculous and hilarious sections of any game: getting the ultra gravity gun(forgve me for my lack of proper or better name). Throwing not just props but enemies around is the most fun I've had with a game in a long time.
Anyway, aside from those things, the game is long, it remains entertaining throughout, it controls well, it's difficulty ranges from average to disturbingly hard...I don't really see any major flaws.
(A note on Ravenholm being scary: I was scared, I know that. It was mostly a suspense thing, you were always waiting for poison head crabs or speedy, skelatel zombies to come rushing around the corner at you. And by the time you've killed half of them your ammo is gone and your forced to defend yourself with a crowbar and a gravity gun.)
After 5 years, it's still regularly mentioned in a positive light. It will probably go up there with the likes of Command and Conquer and Duke Nukem. The gaming masses remember it.cantthinkofausername said:NOTE: This is not a thread for insulting the game. (And when I say insulting I mean, don't go "THIS GAME ) Also, I did not find anything like this after searching.
So, I have been searching for a game and picked up Half-Life 2 this week. I played through it and I want to know - Why is it as big as it is? Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game, but it also isn't the greatest one either.
So, what I am asking is:
Why do you find Half-Life to be one of the best games (or a bad one), is it the puzzles, the shooting, and where do you stand with the series?
(I was quite fond of the driving sections actually.)
