Well, fun FPS game, and unlike others lately, it takes longer then 6 hours to get through the campaign... I've also played it maybe 3-4 times and still haven't gotten bored with it... other games I get bored with pretty easily...

Oh... and Ravenholm... not scary for me... might have been because I played FEAR before HL2 or something... after playing FEAR, there really hasn't been a game that has matched the scariness...

The reason I like it is because everything is done with a zest and style that complements the way the advrage player plays: 15 of full metal jacket, some brainy things and a chance for tomfoolery with the exposition. Their is also the fact that you get a gorgeous sidekick (Alyx), a fun Texan ally (seriously, how many games give you a Barny Calhoun?) and hundreds of easter eggs.

I rented Half-Life 2 for my xbox about 2 or 3 years ago (I know it was around New Year). I never really knew what was going on and never finished it before I sent it back. And my arguement is the revolver is the best revolver I've seen in a game yet.... and also the gravity gun is good too but I have a soft spot for revolvers. Something about them having large caliber bullets and never ever jamming.

It was a good game and I wasn't paying attention to the story that much cause I can't remember it.

I'm thinking of buying it soon though. Like The Orange Box for my 360 and Half-Life 2 for my PC cause mods are just awesome.

It has great realistic characters along with excellent gameplay. Gravity Gun. Best weapon ever.
I would disagree. The characters were realistic, but also very forgettable and as Gordon is a silent hero, there is limited interaction with these characters. When compared to Halo 2 which came out in the same month, it felt worn and dated for a new game, and apart from a gravity engine, it did not do anything special.
But then that's just my opinion and im sure people will disagree for good reasons.
I agree wholeheartedly with this. I never got attacthed to any of the characters while I was playing the game. That led to me not really caring about the story either. They just didn't draw me in like I guess they did to everyone else. A small gripe really, but still.

Well I personally used to be on the "this game is pathetically average compared to the hype it gets" side, but I played through the entire second game plus episode one and two. After that I have to say it's one of the more solid games out there. And solid really is the key word here, it has a fairly good engine, the graphics were great at the time of it's release and still aren't terrible. The characters are believable and very memorable. The story...well from what we've seen so far, it's not entirely that origional but still interesting none the less.

Then there is the part that makes a game "good" for most people: the gameplay. It has six basic weapon "slots" each with it's own fairly generic gun or explosive; pistols smgs, assault rifles, grenades etc. The major addition to this otherwise generic weapon set is of course the gravity gun. Hilariously entertaining, and undeniably helpful. With this gun there is always ammo, because everything is it's ammo. Especially sawblades and toilets. And then there is one of the most rediculous and hilarious sections of any game: getting the ultra gravity gun(forgve me for my lack of proper or better name). Throwing not just props but enemies around is the most fun I've had with a game in a long time.

Anyway, aside from those things, the game is long, it remains entertaining throughout, it controls well, it's difficulty ranges from average to disturbingly hard...I don't really see any major flaws.

(A note on Ravenholm being scary: I was scared, I know that. It was mostly a suspense thing, you were always waiting for poison head crabs or speedy, skelatel zombies to come rushing around the corner at you. And by the time you've killed half of them your ammo is gone and your forced to defend yourself with a crowbar and a gravity gun.)

I never knew you could pick up toilets. This opens up a whole new world for me! (Melodic opera music as a holy light shines down from above)

And yes. Poison headcrabs and fast zombies are very likely to cause suspense in any situation.

The way the game was expertly made to create tension and suspense by building up the action slowly at the right moments few games have done that better IMO.

Adding great attention to detail in convincing surroundings (the 1984 feel of city 17 was perfect) and strong likable characters that you interact with only through your eyes created one of the most immersive story lines I have played through in an FPS.

In short I love it, mostly for the story mind you. The actual shooting elements I found only just above average.

I did forget to mention that I really didn't enjoy Half-Life(the origional) but to be fair I didn't play through the whole thing because it kept glitching out on me. I'm waiting for Black Mesa to play through it, which I'm happy to say is omcing out some time this year.

NOTE: This is not a thread for insulting the game. (And when I say insulting I mean, don't go "THIS GAME ) Also, I did not find anything like this after searching.

So, I have been searching for a game and picked up Half-Life 2 this week. I played through it and I want to know - Why is it as big as it is? Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game, but it also isn't the greatest one either.

So, what I am asking is:

Why do you find Half-Life to be one of the best games (or a bad one), is it the puzzles, the shooting, and where do you stand with the series?

(I was quite fond of the driving sections actually.)
After 5 years, it's still regularly mentioned in a positive light. It will probably go up there with the likes of Command and Conquer and Duke Nukem. The gaming masses remember it.

I think that makes it good game.

EDIT: Along with the good grounds of it's predecessor too.

HALF-LIFE 2 IS TEH G8EST GAME EVAR!!!!!!!!!!!11

I kid, I love HL2. I like the great environments that you travel through, and the overall atmosphere of the game. I enjoyed the driving sequences, I liked the characters. And even though Gordon is silent, I still like him. Plus, the gravity gun. It is so fun.
I also loved the puzzles, although I have had enough of giant see-saws. I know valve, when I put weight on one end of a plane on a fulcrum, it tilts! I would like them to use more novel puzzle ideas, like those used in Research and Development.
