*The fact that the whole story is told without a single cutscene, everything is from Gordons perspective of things.
*Alex is the most likeable AI I've ever seen.
*Graphics was incredible when it first launched.
*The story itself is one of the best I've seen.
*The fact that Half-Life 1 was one of the best games ever made, for some of the same reasons as the prequel.
*Gordons is a faceless hero wich could be you, if you where awesome enough though! ^^
*The weapons was unique
*Enemy AI was smarter than most FPS' out there

The list could just go on and on, but one of the key factors is the no cutscene part. The fact that everything is happening while you play, through the eyes of the main character of the story. And the last one is the headcrab pet of the Dr.Name-just-slipped-my-mind, I thought it was awesome. But this is just me, everyone has their own opinions ^^

Edit: The question is why everyone fins Half-Life so wonderful, and you realy should play Half-Life 1 to understand why the fans like it so much. Or, you could just wait for the Black Mesa mod for the PC, wich is a complete remake of Half-Life 1 in source graphics.

The name you're looking for is Dr. Kliner, and the headcrab's name is Llamar.

I have nothing else to add.

NOTE: This is not a thread for insulting the game. (And when I say insulting I mean, don't go "THIS GAME ) Also, I did not find anything like this after searching.

So, I have been searching for a game and picked up Half-Life 2 this week. I played through it and I want to know - Why is it as big as it is? Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game, but it also isn't the greatest one either.

So, what I am asking is:

Why do you find Half-Life to be one of the best games (or a bad one), is it the puzzles, the shooting, and where do you stand with the series?

(I was quite fond of the driving sections actually.)
Ugh, this thread...

OK OK ill explain why I like it.
The reason half life 2 is a good fps is because it is petty much the first game to use "paceing". Before that, first half life for instance, and halo, would be pure shooting with no real characters or non combative segments. Half life 2 introduced a better way of laying out levels. There was gaps in between combat, filled by a puzzle, an allied base or a some form of challenge apart from mindless violence. It might seem normal by today's standards but that is because half life 2 became the blueprint, in a way.

In addition I still cant think of who does that better than valve, episode 2 did it really well. It was fairly challenging and had great puzzles and suchlike. Shame it was so short or it would be better than half life 2, and everything else. Anyway enough valve fanboyism, that is my opinion and I am sticking too it.

I thought that it was awsome because it was made of chocolate.

Cookie for anyone who gets that reference.

The characters are quite realistic, the protagonist has one of the best backstories - physicist shooting zombies and alien overlords, that's a winner - the levels are almost stunning, the story is very impressive and it has this man:

Really though, I don't quite understand all the praise it gets. It's fun, but not great, so, to that end, I like it as a regular fan, but I wouldn't go out of my way to call it one of the greatest games ever made.

It has great realistic characters along with excellent gameplay. Gravity Gun. Best weapon ever.
True. Shooting saw blades at zombies to cut them in half is pretty fun.
I'd also like to add that Ravenholm is one of the scariest levels in gaming.
.... What? I see you haven't played any horror games. Go play Condemned: Criminal Origins.

OT: The game has good story, good quality, good characters, it's long, and it's fun. What else do you want?

you forget the real reason why people like half-life... the modding community. It is easy to modify and is probably the best machinima/storytelling tool made.

Think about it.

Garry's Mod, the single best thing to come out of PC gaming in just about ever, came about as a result of the quality of Half Life 2.

Need I say more?

That's a pretty realistic relationship... woman talks, man pretends to listen, instead thinking about blowing things up and driving fast...

The only bad thing about half-life 2 is the unskippable dialogues (monologues).

Great game.

Pancakes > Half Life.

Regardless, Half Life is a great game.
From voice acting to the characters characters, it's all very tolerable.
The game stays amusing all the way, and there are some nice surprises in there too. I liked Half Life 1 for it's originality and fun story, and Half Life 2 just continued that tradition, but with better graphics. Half Life 2: The lost coast even had great graphics. And even that, being a graph test-level, had a nice setting and feel to it.

Well for starters I know plenty of people who didn't like Half-Life, most since it is not their genre of game. Meaning a FPS.

When Half-Life was released it was an FPS with an engaging storyline that no other FPS had at the time. When I was younger and I played it I remember the shock I had when the first soldier killed a scientist and then started shooting at me. I hid behind a box and the soldier threw a grenade over the box and near me, I ran and he started shooting me. At the time nothing like that was done successfully. The AI in Hexen, Doom, etc just wasn't there.

When Half-Life 2 came out it was the same thing, it was the continuation of the story, graphically at the time there was nothing that looked like it. The AI for Alyx is just awesome. She will stick with you, run for cover, open doors, doesn't get stuck on a pebble on the road. The G-Man character has slowly been evolving into..... something. The addition of a solid physics engine added gameplay elements that weren't there in other games.

It's those elements that have kept the game in such high regard. Now I do admit the first game is dated. The 2nd still looks amazing to me. People going back and playing it now for the first time, it doesn't seem to strike the same chord. Maybe it is just one of those "You had to be there at the time" things...

I've tried playing Half-life 2 three times now. I started the original, Episode 1, and Episode 2.

None of them managed to grab me and make me want to buy the game. My biggest beef is the filler/gameplay ratio. The "no cutscenes" storytelling runs into problems when I don't know what's going on, they're very long and not very interesting, and they can't be skipped. Even when you're not in the middle of a scripted sequence, the game still feels padded. I remember being particularly annoyed when I got the hovercraft, and had to spent an obnoxious amount of time just speeding down the waterways.

Oh, and then there's the constant gravity gun "puzzles" which basically amount to putting heavy objects on top of something to weigh it down. It might have been cute once or twice, but when I'm already running out of patience, they're just tedious.

As for the game when I'm actually playing- well, it's a shooter. One where I never had more than a couple of weapons available to me, and without particularly interesting level design or enemies.

I can appreciate the high production values, but overall it just wasn't very fun. As for it's hype, I've begun to half-suspect that it rose up when PC fanboys needed a game to rally around while bashing Halo.

I just realised the headcrab's name is Llama with an r. I find it unoriginal.
...

Llamar is a common name for African-Americans, bro.

For me Half-Life was the best game when it came out. NOTHING was able to top it. I mean NOTHING at that time could.

It was just so awesome. Graphics back then for the game was awesome too. It also didn't resolve around killing ANYTHING you saw. Which most FPS usually did.

Remember those big tentacle monsters? Yea, you had to dodge them and sound triggered them. So when you where a kid, which I was back then, you thought grenades where to precious to use. So what do you use on the wooden planks that blocks your way? Crowbar your way through. :D Man that was exiting.

Then you had to go all the way up too. Later on I use Grenades much better and most likely only need 2 or 3. There are 2 Obstacle and one is used to lure them away.

Then we have this other monster which was a semi large alien which really just take a lot of hits. You could avoid it the first time and it was also thrilling.

Some areas forced you to not shoot that much because someone thought it was a good idea to booby trap a storage full with nukes.

It was just fun.

Now the only other game I can remember being able to compete is Unreal. Come to think of it, WHICH games where good back then? :/ I played several ones but only Half-Life stuck to the mind like glue. Also Unreal.

For HL2. It just built up on HL and made it even greater. As for the physics. Even today I see games that have half assed physics that doesn't feel REAL. HL2 does. Flinging that brick on someone feels good.

There's a lot of those. Striders, Bull Squids, Antlions, etc. If you're talking about HL2, then I'm assuming Antlions because you said "You could avoid it the first time and it was also thrilling."

I've never heard the name actually. Is it common?

EDIT: Nevermind you said it was common. Wasn't thinking at the moment.

Actually I was talking about Half-Life the entire time. I started to talk about HL2 at the end.
But semi large alien you could avoid once was that Blue beast. Well sometimes you had to run past it and keep running. If you just took your time a bit it got a bit hectic. ^^
