Because its fun even after playing through a couple times. What other reason do you need a game to be wonderful?

What really set it apart for me was its approach to the storytelling, doing away with cutscenes completely and having all the action take place in-game as you're playing. I really. really. really. wish more developers would take a page from Valve in that regard.

also, they have a gravity gun.

It's its uniqueness for me. No other game pulls off realism so well; the expansive, interlinking locations and ambient atmospheres are really immersive. They create a better realistic effect than any amount of high-res character models could ever hope to achieve.
Okay so it kinda fucks realism with the gravity gun but hey, it's the yang to the ambience's yin. It just works! Besides, flinging ragdolls at eachother is just plain awesome.

Never played the games so I can't say. Though, I do hope to get the Orange Box since I just got a 360.
Get it on PC. You'll have over 9000% more fun.
I would, but the only computer I have is a 5 year old laptop. Hell, when I tried Team Fortress 2 durring it's free weekend the graphics looked like crap, it ran at about 5 frames per second, and it crashed about a minute after playing. Not my idea of fun.
This happened to me too..! I think it's something to do with the graphics cards we were using.

As for the game, it was innovative and different for its' time. It also has great plotlines, characters, gameplay, weapons, blahblahblah.
I like it, they just need to hurry up with Episode 3.

I would have to go with the cut-scenes argument: When you are playing a game and it goes to a cut-scene it makes you (it makes me at least) feel like I am watching a movie, like I'm being told a story. Whereas being able to dick about and jump on top of people while they tell you vital information, though essentially stupid and pointless, really makes you feel like you are part of what's going on. Very immersive IMHO.

Obviously the graphics were also a key factor for HL2 though. I really liked the fact that dead NPCs did not just assume the position before they'd even hit the ground as in HL2. In fact I have not experienced anything more pleasing in a game than taking out an enemy on a rooftop and watching his limp body collapse and roll off the roof into a dumpster. Awesomeness on a stick!

I was very disappointing. The only reason I bought it was to get Team Fortress but i play Half life every now and then. It's good but I've played better. The graphics are subpar (which isn't something that usually bugs unless it's a Wii game that trying to have good graphics...that's just painful to look at.) the game play isn't that great, the Gravity Gun is for little more than cheap laughs from hitting a guy in the face with paint can. The characters are from uncanny valley( another thing that usually doesn't me if the game is good enough). There are more but I don't want get too just crap for flaming.

The first half life was okay for me, just okay. When I played Half life 2 I was more into it and I liked more the the first one. But for valve games I prefer team fortress 2, portal, and left 4 dead

I've bought the first one just recently. My impressions may change but... so far I'm not exactly overwhelmed.
Half-Life 2 seemed better than Half-Life 1 to me when I looked at previews and gameplay and stuff. That's just my opinion though.

It's a more refined FPS experience over than your standard HURRR-DURRR RUN N GUN HALOZ FPS experience. If you have the mentality of "don't think about anything just shoot enemies" then yeah, you probably aren't going to like Half-Life 2.
I'll never understand how videogames can breed condescending remarks or how any choice in entertainment has an inherent "smartness."

I'm on the same boat as OP, Which is why I have nothing to say to this games defense.

The designers that helped make Half-Life and/or its sequels should burn. What's wrong with it? Well, EVERYTHING.

Are the graphics visually appealing? No.
Is the music catchy? No.
Is the story compelling? No.
Are the characters well voice-acted? No.
Are the physics realistic? No.
Are the physics beneficial to gameplay? No.
Is there variety in the overall gameplay? No.
Are the controls fluid? No.

Are the puzzles convoluted? Yes.
Is the overall game generic? Yes.
Is the overall game cryptic and convoluted? Yes.
Is the overall game too hard? Yes.

Is the game boring? Yes. Frustrating? Yes. Fun? No.

Pancakes make my butt fat.

But the first half life took me an incredibly long time to get into, Bought it the day it came out, didn't finish the tram ride until several months later. Fell inlove with it after all and when the second came out I picked it up and loved it all over again.

I bought the orange box. Maybe that was my mistake, because I didn't have the earth shattering experience that every one else seems to have had. I couldn't get into the game, I found it very boring, to the point that I didn't finish the game. Let me tell you, for me, that's as bad as it gets. I've played some awfull games, but I still finished them.

I am having a hard time trying to think of a FPS that I liked less.. . . nothing. There is no FPS that was worse than Half Life. I think what killed it for me was the bad graphics, controls, and poor characters. But those things just made it a bad game, it was the utter and complete lack of immersion that made me quit the game. I've been more interested in a game of scrabble than Half Life.

Portal on the other hand, was loads of fun.

I thought it was an incredibly average game. If they ever release the third I'll play it eventually. It's not a game I'll rush out and buy, like ME2 is.

Half life 2 is freakin awesome as well but not as good as the first.

Made and supported very well by Valve; intriguing story and characters; involves you in the game's world; non-generic.

I never played the first one, but HL2 and Episode 2 are both exceptionally good in my opinion.

On the other hand Halo 2 (someone mentioned on the first page) felt generic, dull, uninteresting and ugly as hell. I think it's a credit to the game that with a silent protagonist you still actually care about the characters, and I never actually felt the need for Gordon to speak.
