Maybe you have to have played the original to get into it, I sort of found it like the halo serieis if you didn't play it from the start you wouldn't understand it. It is a really good play though

I'd also like to add that Ravenholm is one of the scariest levels in gaming.
Not trying to sound like a troll or a smartass here, just genuinely curious about what you found scary about Ravenholm. Perhaps I just didn't find it too bad because everyone has built up how scary it is, so I was anticipating it.

I had fun. It looked pretty. Neither the writing nor the acting made me cringe as so many games that have come before it have.

there is limited interaction with these characters. When compared to Halo 2 which came out in the same month, it felt worn and dated for a new game, and apart from a gravity engine, it did not do anything special.
But then that's just my opinion and im sure people will disagree for good reasons.
I'm the opposite of you, I think Halo 2 felt dated compared to HL2, particularly story wise. Also, what version of the game are you playing? I vividly remember the cast of Half Life 2, and the graphics...well, I find them "better" than Halo.

As for why I like it, good story, good characters, and some fantastic mods.

I liked it the first time I played it.

Seems pretty boring looking back on it though, nothing is particularly great about it.

I LOVED the original and I bought all the expansions to it. But I didn't like HL 2 as much, until I bought the Orange box and played episode 1 & 2... and for some reason those two episodes improved HL 2 allot for me!

*edit* I liked the original because of the atmosphere and because of the graphics which were awesome for the time.

I would say I liked HL 2 for roughly the same reason.

Progressively the game has gotten worse and worse.

Initially it was interesting, however Half life 2 took away the essence of the game, and then episodes 1 and 2 completely ruined it for me. It feels rushed and the storyline they've implemented is awful at best. Two words I have describing pretty much the entirety of ep2: Forced Drama.
