Most of this is explained in either Half Life 1, its expansions or in Half Life 2. Except for the g-man but he's supposed to be mysterious. He also appears in the game several times as a sort of easter egg.

The Halo books are nice, but since the whole story of Half-Life began with the first game, the black mesa incident, there is no need for that much backstory. In fact it would be hard to make any, since you witness the events of Half Life from 3 different perspectives. (Gordon Freeman obviously, the Barney Calhoun in Blue Shift, and finally a soldier tasked with cleaning up the Black Mesa mess in the Opposing Force expansion)

Going by that logic, Halo didn't really explain much about the rings either. All we know is that they were built by some "forerunner" and they kill stuff if activated.
Hmmm, I don't remember the Combine being revealed in half Life or it's two expansions but it has been a while since I played them. There was those black ops guys but I thought they belonged to the military.

It isn't necessarily the backstory that irks me when it comes to Half-Life series but more of a lack of explanation on the main story. I'm fine with some things being left up to speculation by the responder but somethings need to be explained. For me, the Combine and what happened on Earth need to explained in the game.

The Forerunners are something I feel don't need to be explained because you don't come into contact with them (unless you count 343 guilty spark as a forerunner). You learn a little bit more about the rings throughout the first game although you have to pay attention to what Guilty Spark is saying during 'The Library', pretty hard with the zombies.

You're so very wrong there. I truely enjoy the Halo universe. I have all the games, and i've read the Fall of Reach book.
Fair enough then, my bad. Sorry about that.
During half-life 2 and the episodes the 7hour war is mentioned several times. So the story must go something like this.

Black mesa incident opens portal between alien world and ours.
Because of this portal the combine can come to earth.
Combine are fastly superior so the war for earth only last 7 hours.
The world is changed to a 1984 look-a-like.
Half-Life 2 begins

How is that for a back story

Halo Life?
Nah. Just make the Gravity Gun a Forerunner weapon available in Multiplayer (e.g. like the Sentinel Beam).

Although, thinking about it, just playing a game in Forge mode allows the Guilty Spark to pick things up... Hmm. Just needs a repulse action.

I liked the crossbow and crowbar, but surely they would be useless against Mjolner Armor?

P.S. Halo series > Half Life series
That's how I've always felt too, Halo over Half Life. Ever since Halo started being unfairly bashed Half Life's been unjustly praised. I played Half Life 2 when I got the Orange Box and you know what:
I thought it was okay.
That's it, fun and creative but still just:
Okay.
I much prefer Halo on every level, mostly because I grew attached to the chief, Cortana and of course the Arbiter. That and the multiplayer is extraodrinary.
So I decide to hell with everyone who thinks Half Life is some becon of greatness.

I love Halo, I APPRECIATE Half-Life and everything it does, but I'll never love it like my baby Halo.
Yeah that's pretty much how I've always felt. I can see what's great about Half Life 2 but I think I'll always be more charmed towards Halo becasue it is a trilogy I have lots of affection for.

Halo and Half-Life shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence or the same breath. it insults the masterpiece that Half-Life is.

Half-Life Because it was amazing, plus it introduced me to Steam. Are we talking about the series in general or the originals?

It would work, considering neither of the protagonists like to talk,
and just replace flood with head crabs or vice versa.

Halo is my favourite by far.

I found Half-Life got a bit boring, I never finished it, I got to some spider on the alien world and got bored.

Half-Life 2 was alright, I find it rather boring, the last section was particularly dull, the entire tower section felt largely repetitive and uninspiring. I only completed it because I wanted to the the end but the fun had completely gone for me.

Episode One started on a low point by beginning in the tower, I got so bored of doing that all again, once I got the the train I pretty much gave up.

Episode Two was much better, the last scene was particularly good. I hope they can surpass this for Episode Three.

I found Halo incredibly good fun however, much of this was down to the cooperative play. Halo when played as a single player game was still excellent but coop made it amazing, the best FPS of its time and one of the best games of all time for me.

Halo 2 was a bit of a let down but it was still good. Halo 3 was mediocre, a complete let down, it had its moments but was well out of the league of say, COD4.

I take both.

Depends on which game you mean.

If it are the originals, then Halo.
Sequels, then Half Life.

The original Half Life had no story. Well, other than "shit went wrong, are you a bad enough dude to survive?" Which, IIRC was the plot of just about every FPS released at that time.
You clearly missed the underlying social-economic criticism. Also, the game was clearly anti-colonialism and some other deep stuff. Of course, you had to pay really really really close attention.

Seriously though, HL's story summary: Demons Aliens from Hell Xen invade a secret military base using Gateways portals and the lone marine scientist has to fight to survive, eventually finding out about teleportation experiments and then going to Hell Xen and finally killing the Spider Mastermind Nihilant (who, by the way, has an exposed brain), which stops the invasion.

Throw in a military clean-up and a G-Man.

Half-Life for me, it was one of the first "big-boy" Mature games I was introduced to, and possibly the best I've played since then.

Vs threads are not allowed - its an idiotic poll anyway as the two games are completely different.
Cry some more

I'd say Halo, I'm not a fan of the series, but I loved the first game
I didn't like Half Life that much I always thought it was vastly overrated; I found it too linear and just a bog-standard shooter, the only thing I liked about it was the physics system. Some may argue that Halo was overrated, but whatevs, I definatley preferred Halo: CE.

I would sat Halo in terms of multiplayer, but if you were talking about single-player only it would have to be Half-Life

Halo was fun but,... Half-life was ground breaking!... and when HL2 came out on the source engine... It looked better too!... it still does.
