But indeed, the main character of Tom Clancy's novels isn't in the Special Forces, and never was; he is a CIA analyst that eventually works his way up to be the Deputy Director.
EDIT

-=HOLY SHIT BOOK SPOILERS=-
Actually Jack Ryan became president when the vice president got ousted for a sex scandal. The current president placed Ryan in the VP's position, but a 747 then took out the President leaving Ryan to take the job. He then successfully campaigned for a second term.

Debt of Honor, Executive Orders, and The Bear and The Dragon cover all of that.
-=End spoilers=-

Considering that the Clancy name is attached to HAWX, I really wouldn't automatically assume that a Tom Clancy game is going to involve any form of intelligence anymore. Expect Ubisoft to plaster it on anything involving "MILITARY LAWL" combat.

A Clancy fan I'll wager?

And I been following HAWX and I believe they said that HAWX is a group of mercenary fighter pilots. Makes sense for mercenaries to make up cool sounding names for themselves.

I guess I'm too optimistic about the entertainment industry.

SPOILER ALERT FOR TOM CLANCY NOVELS

---------------

I know that, I've read all the novels that Tom Clancy himself actually wrote. I just didn't want to blow out a huge spoiler for anyone who hasn't read the novels and wants to...So I only mentioned Jack's career up to Deputy Director at the CIA.

And actually, if I remember right from The Teeth of the Tiger, Jack refused to run for a second term because of all the shit he had to go through. Poor guy had the roughest Presidential term ever, having to rebuild pretty much the entire government, deal with one biological attack and another attempted one, assassination attempts on himself and his family, tensions with India and China, cleaning up the mess left over from the conflict with Japan, a major war in the Middle East, and a war between China and Russia that came close to becoming a nuclear war. Robby runs instead, then gets assassinated by the KKK while campaigning in the deep south.

Oh

...

Whoops

I'm kinda thinking an edit on my previous post is in order.

I was excited when I first heard about HAWX. Then I started reading about the actual gameplay and it's basically Ace Combat dumbed down to the point that a blind, deaf, autistic two year old could play it well because apparantly arcade flight games are 'too hard for newbies.'

Never played any fighter sims besides Rogue Squadron (and does that even count?). As a general rule I follow Tom Clancy franchises and I've liked pretty much every one so far except Ghost Recon (Advanced Warfighter was fine enough but failed to hold my interest, oddly I really disliked Ghost Recon 2 but I beat it).

I'll just wait and see, I mostly don't dismiss games before they're reviewed unless they're of a genre I don't like.

You can atleast gives props were they are due. Tom Clancy does a great job of blending all of his franchises in a cohesive way.(Them being not many.(For example in EndWar you can use the HAWX's and GR.)

Another (Minor) issue I have with HAWX is that Ubisoft is dipping into George Lucas territory by raping their own canon. The story of HAWX, simply put, conflicts with other Tom Clancy games. These mercenaries are NEVER mentioned in any other game that takes place around the same time. It is like everyone just wakes up one morning and notices that a bunch of very powerful PMCs just spontaneously appeared overnight...And seeing as how there is no mention of them in the games that take place after HAWX is set, they spontaneously combusted before dusk the same day.

As they are doing with Star Wars, Ubisoft is starting to make absurd shit up to come up with new Tom Clancy games, even if it conflicts with past ones. True, this is a minor issue, I don't think anyone truly cares an enormous deal for the story of the typical Tom Clancy game because they are all really simplistic compared to the novels, it is just a bit sloppy. Although, I applaud them for at least TRYING new ideas. They could just spam Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell into retardation, but they are trying new IPs. The downside is that the Tom Clancy brand of games is moving further and further away from what the novels are like. The newer games are already a far cry from what the Tom Clancy novels are like; that rift only widens now that they are exploring stories like "Huge PMC invades the US; Lone fighter pilot must SAVE AMERICA in H.A.W.X.!"

Oh, and the name is fucking retarded, considering it is a Tom Clancy game. It makes it sound like some spin-off of Power Rangers or something.

Tom Clancy has nothing to do with these games. They just put his name on the box.

Of course Rogue Squadron counts. The big issue I have with HAWX is the fact that the game ships with what can only be described as "easy mode."
The game features an Enhanced Reality System (ERS), which can include radars, incoming missile detection, an anti-crash system, damage control system, tactical map, information relay, weapons trajectory control and the ability to give commands to an AI squadron.
Watching them "play" this game made it look more like Pilot Wings than anything else. All you've got to do is fly through the bounding boxes that get displayed and push the fire button when it tells you to. Granted, it can be turned off, but jesus, that feature goes straight into overkill territory.

Then again, considering that I've got a full flight simulator setup + game collection, I'm probably just being an elitist prick.

No, being an elitist prick would be going to the boards for HAWX on a website and trolling your distaste for the game. There is this one troll on Gamespot who was trolling the boards for HAWX when they released the first gameplay footage, acting like an elitist prick...I come back about five months later and he is STILL THERE. It is like someone wants to win 2008's "Most Persistent Troll" Award.

Frankly though I want to give HAWX a shot out of curiosity. It is a new IP in the Tom Clancy brand, and I generally hate bashing something before I at least try it, no matter how dumbed down HAWX is. But, we should keep in mind that HAWX is from the same guys who brought us the completely mediocre and extremely simplistic Blazing Angels series. That probably explains it right there. But, on a positive note...HAWX looks pretty.

By the way...I think we can say that the topic has officially been derailed. So, while we are at it...Who likes pie?

[In a vain attempt to put the discussion on topic]

I'm sure Sergeant Forge likes pie.

Well halo sucks, i thought everyone agreed
on that so, any other game can destroy it.
This is known as flamming, use it as an example of what not to do.

To address your phrases: that's subjective, you thought wrong, even ET for the 2600?

Now let's have no more of the unjustified comments on poor-quality (justify them and they're fine, or state it as opinion and not fact).

Yeah, although I don't see buggy in Halo 2 aside from texture pop-ins. Unless you played the PC version.

I also don't see any plot-holes in Halo 3, and if you point out any I could probably fill them.

The story is hard to follow I'm told.
