yeah, and in hardcore mode fast travel is turned off. sure, this might make it appeal to less people, but it would make the game that much more immersive to me.
You can just not use fast travel you know. The game never forces you to use it.
i'm aware of this yes, and of course in TOS its not nearly as much a problem as in fallout, where walking is your only option. i really don't have a problem with fast travel as a mechanic, but something in universe would break me out of the game a lot less.

like a teleportation spell, or do wow style and have flying animals cart your ass everywhere. i would like that a lot better.
Sure, but you realize what needs to be made for these systems to work?

Teleportation spell: Either need various versions of the spell for each location or have a pop-up asking where the player wants to go. Using a Mark and Recall system requires variables. Requires play testing.

Flying animals: You need animations, the animals in question to be models and textured. Then you need possible sound effects, price checking, and play testing.

Current Skyrim Fast Travel: Click and go. Player set to designated area, no sound effects, no animations, minor play testing compared to the other two options.
yeah cuz there's certainly a shortage of people who would have had a heart attack if they were asked to beta test for skyrim.

It's about resources. Do you want them making 120 hand crafted dungeons (skyrim has 150+) just so they can make either one of your suggestions? Battlefield's and Call of Duty's single player doesn't suck because of beta testing, it sucks because of a lack of resources to make a proper campaign.
you mentioned beta testing, so there you go.
in any case, i realize resources are an issue as well. but simply replacing walking with a loading screen is just a lazy workaround for me, although i know many people hardly notice fast travel mode anymore.

so maybe this is where hardcore mode bridges the gap, i get to get more sucked into the world and everyone else get's to have convenience. you couldn't just remove fast travel from skyrim though, the game is built around it. the world is far to big to simply walk everywhere. a horse helps a bit, but a flying mount would probably be the best way to go.

or not, i guess. fast travel didn't bug me TOO much in fallout 3, so if bethesda really doesn't want to do that it wouldn't stop me from buying if i was going to anyway.
Flying mount makes no sense given the storyline.

Unless the flying mount isn't a dragon. Then I guess it might make sense....although never in the series to my knowledge has anyone in Tamriel ever ridden a creature to fly. Levitation, yes, rides, no.
yes yes, fine fine. i haven't played a TOS game, so my knowledge is let us say limited.

so flying mount mechanic; quick travel that provides very little break in gameplay, and is accessible to any build with the cash. that description could easily be retrofitted to something that fits in universe.

No thanks, and the only reason, it'd be too damn easy, and just be an annoyance rather than a challenge.

The reason, Fallout could get away with you needing to eat and drink because food and drink was usually scarce. In Skyrim, which you could look as a growing nation, food is everywhere. Even in the bajillion year old crypts, there are random foods lying around all over the place.

Food is not a scarce resource in that game, therefore instead of becomming a challenge it'd just be annoying. Like being a vampire. Cool to ave, annoying in the long run.

Water too, it's a land made mostly of ice. Water isn't going to run out anytime soon.

Althogh making Arrows weight would possibly make a difference. An interesting challenge. However, I've used just a dagger up until now. So you don't even have to play with arrows if you don't want to.

I don't know, in my opinion it'd be out of place, but if people want it, go ahead. I think I'd just prefer it much more as it is now.

Just a quick thought. What if the food had to be varied. You could only eat so much of a kind of food before getting sick of it for a while. If you keep a varied diet then your body would work more normally? Dinner of Venison, Eldar Cheese, and Wine one day then Rabbit Haunch, Cabbage Stew, and Honningbrew Mead the next day.

Again, my main point stands that that still sounds like an annoyance, but that would work in theory.

And it would give me something to spend my tens of thousands of septims on. :D

I agree absolutly that Skyrim needs a Hardcore mod/mode.

Personally I don't understand why they didn't include one with the games release as did Obsidian had done with FO:NV.

I understand that there are gamers that aren't keen to have to deal with ammo weight, personal requirements like eating and drinking but ignoring these in games like Skyrim breaks the immersion/4th wall for me and I suspect a lot of serious gamers out there.

As someone mentioned earlier, having the Hardcore mode on makes the game far more challenging and by extension, more enjoyable and satisfying.

I want to see in future CRPG's features like these:
You simply can't run all the time, everywhere and carry you're maximum weight allowance. It's just stupid and needs to be fixed.
Trying to swim while wearing heavy armour should be a quick way to a watery grave.
A stamina feature which runs down with the characters exertion, meaning you can't just swing away for ever. Endurance would become a more important feature.
More diseases/ailments and pathogens in games that effect the player. Wounds get infected if left untreated etc.
A scaled carrying system, ie; the more you have on you, the slower you move and the faster you tire. Try running with 50 kilos of gear for a mile and see what happens. Unless you're a super athlete, you'll be almost dead by the end of the run.
Gold/money should weigh something as well, it's ludicrous to have a player running around with thousands of gold coins as if they weight nothing. Even paper money eventually starts to gather a load in weight.

These are just a few of the ideas that should be included into a Hardcore mod that people can choose to play. I think it makes for a far better game.

Yes, as right now food seems pretty redundant. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but it's not...MEGA challenging. Yes there have been times when I've died, obviously, but nothing ever made me go "ooohh god WHY!?"

No it wasn't. You could still fast travel just not if the distance/time it would take to get there would cause your hunger, hydration, or sleep would kill you.
umm, no what wasn't? anyways, i'd rather discover how much i can walk before dying myself rather than have the loading screen express tell me. maybe its just me, but you know.
I don't really know what you're contesting there. You totally could quick travel in Hardcore Mode
i'm not contesting anything, i just said i'd like it better if you couldn't fast travel in hardcore mode, you silly silly person.
It certainly SOUNDED like you were trying to stir up an argument to me

maybe you should actually read someone's post before you jump down their throats then.
You're the one acting like a peteulant child

I really think this sort of thing could do a world of good for the game, and would really enhance the experience. As soon as the Construction Set gets released, I want to put together some kind of Hardcore/Survival mod for the game.

So far, I have a lot of general ideas; drinking and eating would be necessary, as would sleep, and taking shelter from serious weather. I might model food rot, depending on how complicated that would be. I'd like to disable fast-travel, since in-game wagons already allow fast travel for a fee. I might do some expanded wound, and fatigue modelling as well. Low stamina would cause you to occasionally stumble when running (with a greater chance when running backward or over rough terrain), and severe damage, exhaustion, or over-encumbrance could cause you to collapse. I think diseases would be a bit more serious if it could progress, and potentially kill you, too. Placeable bedrolls/tents, campfires that consume firewood (and ward off the cold), and portable cookpots would help players who would rather avoid towns. I might have to slow down the game clock a bit too, to make days stretch out a bit more... as it is, the days seem to go by too quickly.

I've seen a lot of suggestions in this thread, but what sort of things would you like to see in a Hardcore/Survival mod, and what don't you want to see? I'm definitely going to throw this mod together, and the more ideas and opinions I have, the better I'm able to plan and design it.
