I'm playing it over again, on 00 Agent -- am stuck at the Statue right now, though I should advance beyond it as soon as I'm able to take down Trevalyn's automatic shotgun'd guards and get the flight recorder. In any case: what did you find to be the hardest level in GoldenEye? -- for those who played it -- and why? I recall debates taking place about this when I was a kid, so I've tailored the poll to include the levels I freqently hear cited as 'hard.'

I never tried it.. however I'd probably say Control since it took me quite a few attempts to do when I was a wee noob. However replaying it recently, it didn't seem like such a hard level.. if the guards spawn at the same rate then it's probably alright on 00 Agent.

The very last level of the ones you had to unlock, never beat it when I had my 64, be damned if I can remember the name

Control. Fuck that level.
Took me over a month to try and beat it. Of course I was 6 at the time, so take that with a grain of salt.

the control level. Natasha just could not stay alive, I remember I beat the level once but I forgot to destroy all the mainframes so I still failed the mission. I think that was the first time I ever swore.

Probably Aztec, in terms of sheer difficulty.
However I put bunker 2 down, because it's a fucking endurance fest, no matter what way you take it. Slow and stealthy took me and hour to get through.
Fighting your way through amounts to backing into a room and killing every mook that funnels into the room. They send about half the Russian army though, I'm not sure if they ever stop spawning. Rushing is viable until double 0 agent, whereupon they turn your coward ass to swiss cheese, and kill Natalya if you start doing too well.
That level can fuck right off!

Played this game a lot when I was a kid, and Control probably sticks to me as the hardest level.
Also, I remember allmost any level was hard like shit on 00 Agent. :b

Control, god I hate that level, although the last level is bearable until you get to drop down the ladder and that fucker will shoot you off providing you don't miss the platform.

Never liked Control. The OO difficulty on that level was like pure liquid evil that was soaked into the cart.

Many others have said it, but I'll say it too:

Control...

[sub]With Bunker II coming in a close second....[/sub]

Although, I've always loved both Dam, and Cradle.

I voted Aztec. Why?
Why is Aztec That One Level [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ThatOneLevel/FirstPersonShooter]? Set to 00 Agent, and let me count the ways:

* The very start is a deathtrap with three guards with grenades and assault rifles against you with a pistol. If one throws a grenade, it's a question of whether you decide to hit restart or just die. Your survival is entirely based on what they decide to do.
* The level is a hive of respawn points for enemies with either high-damage assault rifles or even higher damage hitscan lasers with crippling knockback. You will succeed or fail based on where they are spawned, not on the basis of anything you might do.
* The vent screens, which you cannot see through but your enemies can, making it very hard to next to impossible to get through the level with the health that you need to survive the final part of the level mentioned below.
* The centrepiece of the level is a gargantuan fuck you trap, with the shuttle bay doors closing and forcing you to open them in order to complete the mission. Climbing the ladder up to them borders on impossible, and beating the mission can only be done by closing the doors yourself because the final script switches state without checking if they're open or closed. Yes, you basically can only win by exploiting a programming oversight.
* There's more. Part of the mission involves reprogramming the shuttle. To do this, you must do battle with Jaws, who totes double assault rifles (but who you can kill by getting really up close so that he can't use them on you). This is while the infinite guards come to kill you. You must then retreat to the control room, and then fight your way back to where Jaws was, so that you can fire off said shuttle, where the above ladder comes into play.
* Even the official Player's Guide says this is a Luck Based Mission. Fortunately, it also says that the guards are finite until you kill Jaws.

Like others have already said, Control. It was simply rage inducing.

Cradle on higher difficulties was also hard. Mainly because the guards had body armor and can take a lot of bullets.
