Why the hell are so many people putting Final Fantasy games as something they cried over?

Even if the story is nice (which it isn't go watch review on http://spoonyexperiment.com/) I find it a little hard to invest in the story when the gameplay is so dull and repetitive. I can maybe see someone being sad, but actually breaking down and crying is just unfathomable.
Well, it's not really crying, just being teary eyed. I never bawled because of a game myself.

And I actually really like turn based combat. So yeah D:
I guess that makes sense then. If you like the gameplay it is much easier to get involved in the story.

little big adventure 2 when I was about 9,

the first game I completed and it was brilliant!! other than that I don't think many games carry such an emotional attachment with them, though maybe I'm just stuck in the rut of third person, cover based shooters at the moment

If you don't know, you haven't played the game. Get on it immediately.
"Mommy loves you very much!"
Dom's wife. The first two or three times I played through, I didn't care at all, but it eventually caught me on a bad day and hit me like a punch in the gut.
Now, hang on. There's some qualifiers I have to put in here. The game didn't overwhelm me by itself, but I was playing multiplayer and listening to a particularly melancholic Pink Floyd album. Also, I was VERY stoned. It went from an awesome gunfight to a plea for humanity to end its brutal, uncaring ways. Suddenly, every person I'd shot on screen had a family and friends and left them all behind to ensure safety and financial security for everyone back home... and I was taking their lives so I could paint red stripes on my gun. It was mostly the music, though.

While I didn't play this ending myself (watched on YouTube), the Dragon Age ending where
Alistair sacrifices himself for the woman he loves. Because (a) I love Alistair, and (b) that kind of sappy romantic thing is my kryptonite, I teared up real quick.

2 I can think of off the top of my head (major spoilers!)

Heavy Rain (seriously don't read unless you've played it. If you haven't then go f*cking play it already!)
THIS GAME had so many sad/disturbing parts, but the main moment that really made me cry like no other game or movie I've seen was when Ethan got to his son and managed to get him out of his 'cell', but couldn't revive him. Trying to get him to breathe again was the most intense gameplay I've ever done, even more than the desperate fight against the Origami Killer right after. After about a minute, Ethan gave up in despair and the camera zoomed out slowly... I honestly thought I had failed because Ethan hadn't found the warehouse on his own. Then I almost felt better when the boy came to, but then I realized that my Ethan only had about 10 seconds left to tell his son how much he loved him before the poison killed him. If you played the game like me then you know what happens, but that scene was one of the most emotional things I've experienced so far in my life. Hell I'm choking up a bit just remembering it.
Oooh, yeah. Forgot about that. That game had me crying. I have two kids myself, so in the beginning
when he's looking for Jason in the crowded mall, and Jason dies, I burst into tears and went and hugged my kids.

Yes.

Drakengard 2. Scene was particularly bitter for me because I had been rooting for these two since the first game and for my trouble I get to kill them. Bitter, bitter tears I shed.
Here for your enjoyment:

(and yes that is the actual music from the game)

Also not sure if this counts, but many visual novels from japan. Some of them are basically designed to be tearjerkers.

Final Fantasy VII was one of my very first games I have bought all by myself and it was the first game that made me cry. It is of course obvious at which part ;)
Well, I was young and I didn't know that a game would really let a maincharacter die like that, eventough there were other games doing the same but that was -for me- after my sadsad FFVII-experience.

I have never cried over a videogame, but there have been couple that have been really close:
The ending of bioshock 2, got the good one.
The ending of brutal legend, WHAT?! IT WAS TOUCHING! Shut up!

Nothing else come to my mind right now..

Came close towards the end of RDR, and closer at the end of Twilight Princess. Loved that game, despite all the hate it got.

Almost all Final Fantasy games have made me bawl my eyes out. FFVII obviously when Aeris died, Crisis Core when Zack died *sobs* and Lost Odyssey had me in tears several times! I'm a complete girl when it comes to soppy RPG stories.

No, but I was quite upset (and unnerved) by the ending cinematic for Red Asphalt in Saints Row 2

If you've played it, you'll know the one...

I cried when Persona 4 was over.

Such a great experience.

Captcha: FRASER; urtai
That game! How dare it play with my emotions, it's just that good T_T
Even P3 made me cry, I couldn't stop.
When you decided to let Ryoji live and fight Nyx the music in the background would just make my eyes water every time I played it, I felt like a moron crying while I played the game but it was that intense to me, also the fact Shinjiro dies, Junpei almost dies, and MC dies in the end.

There are far too many to count because I tend to easily attach myself to members of my team in video games, so their joys and pains become mine (yeah, it's odd... but it makes the games much more enjoyable) Here's the main ones I remember:

FFVII - twice. The first was from the pain of losing Aeris, of course. I was actually quite young at the time (9 years old), and had to stop playing because I depended on her healing so much and couldn't alter my strategies. Second was when I finally beat it and was just ecstatic!

FFIX - Pretty much the entire ending... from joy (and the music).

NIER - Yeah, if you've played you know that this can't really be narrowed down to any particular moment. Although, this was the first game to actually make me feel rage at the opposing team (from the sacrifice of that one character)

Kingdom Hearts series - This series tends to do this to me, though I fully understand the cheesiness of quite a few of the scenes.

Mother 3 as well - esp. the first three acts and the final act.

For some reason, I didn't tear up that much during either of the ME's. Ah well, they're both still great games!

I've never actually cried at a video game, but there were several moments that were especially moving/made me just want to just be alone for the rest of the day.

The ending where I decided not to do the Dark Ritual or whatever, and I was all set for my character to sacrifice themselves, and when we killed the archdemon I was like, okay, okay, I'm ready, this'll be sad, but I'm going to do this -- then Alistair starts fucking talking to me. Not the best time, dude. I made him king in the Landsmeet, so when he starts talking about how he was never actually cut out for the job, sacrificing himself to end the Blight would be the best thing he could do, etc, I start freaking out a little. Then he starts saying all that sappy stuff about how he couldn't stand to let my character die (because they're so in wuv). I remember choosing the dialogue option, "Wait, this is crazy!" And then Alistair says, "Sanest thing I've ever done." They kiss, and then Alistair runs off to kill the archdemon and dies in the process.
What. the. fuck.

God. I knew it was going to happen. I thought, no way is Ross just going to leave him be, but all the ranching missions lulled me into false security. What nearly got me was when Marston opened up the barn door and there were all those soldiers. Throughout RDR you kill like, hordes of people, but this would be impossible. My chest literally hurt when he went into dead eye.
YOU CAN'T KILL THEM ALL, MARSTON, YOU JUST CAN'T

And the mission called Nature or Nurture was a neat touch, too.

Seeing the Normandy blown up just made my jaw drop and all I could do was stare at the screen. I knew it would happen, but my heart still broke. Also, seeing Kaidan on Horizon was emotional, but then he started douching it up so all my nostalgia turned to anger.

Then in Lair of the Shadow Broker, when the Ilos or Vigil theme started playing -- the one that plays in Mass Effect's main menu -- I just sighed.

EDIT: Hopefully I'm not the only one who gets teary-eyed when they hear Deadman's Gun.

The Darkness made me almost cry, then it made me actually cry.

The first time was when you see Jenny get killed by Pauly, I was welling up at that point, then at the end when Jackie and Jenny get to see each other again I just couldn't stop a tear...

Other than that I can't really think of any.
