Also, not to worry: as a dutchman I'm quite confident that the negative stereotype will be mediated soon.
Regardless: fuck that guy. Too many words spent on someone not worthy of your attention.
Ontopic:
No, they didn't. Even if it was in response to the most recent media panic, Blizzard has every right to make light of anything, even if it offends some. If there's one credo (is that dutch? English? I don't even know anymore) I've always embraced it's that everyone has the right to express themselves in any way they see fit, and everyone else has the right to ignore them.
Yeah, I read about that in the Independent(newspaper). There was a briliant sentence about the pointless measures some countries have taken:Mimsofthedawg said:eh... just as long as you don't go around killing all the livestock like the egyptians... lol.iain62a said:Well, yeah, but I just meant this particular strain of the virus. An epidemiologist I shant make.Mimsofthedawg said:Actually, it did "come" from pigs. This virus has four types. Although virus' aren't living, you can think of those types as the same "family", just different "species". Originally all four used to infect only pigs, with the fourth one occasionally infecting humans. Then the fourth one mutated and now only infects humans. Because of this, there's five. It did come from pigs, but this particular strain has nothing to do with them.iain62a said:Another fun fact: There hasn't been a single pig that's tested positive for this strain of flu. There's hardly any evidence to suggest that it came from pigs.
Also: That's what I meant when I said that this flu didn't come from pigs; that it wasn't caught off pigs in its current incarnation. In the face of these moves, every so often a WHO official, UN food safety expert, or some other weary specialist would patiently explain to the media that the flu could not be caught from eating pork, Parma or any other kind of ham, and the precise virus in question had yet to be detected in any swine anywhere on the planet.
Why would that be sarcasm? Do you guys not hear about how hard this is hitting Mexicans? Or do you just not care because 'maybe it will keep those damned foreigners outta your sacred red white and blue country?'ZeroMachine said:Please tell me that's sarcasm...CoziestPigeon said:They didnt go too far, but with hundreds of people dying from it, they should really think of removing it.
First of all, in case you haven't noticed, this thread has had enough anti-American sentiment. So quit while you're ahead.CoziestPigeon said:Why would that be sarcasm? Right, suspected means not real, how naive of me.ZeroMachine said:First of all, in case you haven't noticed, this thread has had enough anti-American sentiment. Second of all, there have only been about twenty deaths confirmed to be from Swine Flu, and about 200 other suspected.
There haven't been hundreds of deaths. Do the research.
Did I say that? No. I'm simply saying that you can't say there have been hundreds of deaths when there's no proof that there has been, and even then on a grander scale there haven't been a LOT of deaths. More lives are taken by the normal flu every year. You're blowing it way out of porportion.CoziestPigeon said:Right, suspected means not real, how naive of me.ZeroMachine said:First of all, in case you haven't noticed, this thread has had enough anti-American sentiment. You say I was blowing it out of proportion? All I said to begin with was 'they should think about removing it' then you started thisZeroMachine said:-snip-

Not that this lessens the impact of the deaths... I feel bad for everyone who has lost someone to this. It just isn't some enourmous tragedy.
... Eh... true... I don't know, I guess I'm aggrivated. I've dealt with two people this weekend sayingCoziestPigeon said:You say I was blowing it out of proportion? All I said to begin with was 'they should think about removing it' then you started thisZeroMachine said:-snip-

Good thing we have antibiotics and aren't waist deep in a world war. Plus, I love your etiquetteZeroMachine said:You are correct, sir. Swine Flu is just a new Spanish Flu, slightly mutated.Vanguard_Ex said:Correct me if Im wrong, but isn't this a mutation of that flu?iain62a said:It's funny, because 5000 people are killed every week worldwide by seasonal flu. So far there have been 15 confirmed deaths caused by swine flu, and 101 suspected deaths by swine flu. AIDS kills 38500 people every week. Spanish Flu killed 50 million people in 1919. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion.
Not really relevant to this particular discussion, but an interesting fact.
Enough of that particular tangent though, I don't see why this would cause any offence.
EDIT:
I think that's a different strain of flu you're thinking of there - The Spanish Flu. I could be wrong though.Clashero said:Actually, one of the first swine flu outbreaks was in 1918, I think.

I remember that appereantly it got actual scientific info for real life diseasesVoltySquirrel said:It wasn't just added. There was a article in the News Room stating that it had been there since the WOTLK beta. Besides, this "epidemic" is really just the best news since the election. Seriously, I don't care about what Michelle Obama is wearing! On a side note, WoW once had a quarentine worthy epidemic a long while back. Good stuff.
That was the Spanish Flu. There was a case of Swine Flu back in the 1970's.Clashero said:Actually, one of the first swine flu outbreaks was in 1918, I think.
Also, it's not insensitive. OH MY GOD, 787 people could possibly, maybe be offended by something they most likely won't hear about!
