Well final fantasy reinvents itself a bit with each new game (except if they make sequels etc) - so we can never know what the next games will be like.

Who knows, in 30 years people might not care about FFVII anymore, there could be people raving about Final Fantasy XVI or something!

Then again I always do find the name funny. I wonder when they will make their FINAL final fantasy...
In 30 years they only release 3 more games? They will be some huge, deep, very interactive games.

They will release the FINAL fantasy when Japan doesn't exist 'cos I am fairly certain thats were most of the games are sold.

I really do think it's nostalgia. This game is not really desperately different than it's predecessors, and is probably better than at least half it's predecessors in battle system and visual styles.
I prefer FFX battle system actually, I haven't played 13 but from what I've heard it's like a hack and slash with less hacking and slashing.

The thing I like about 10's version is you can take your time and have a bit more of a strategy, 99% of games are just spam the attack button till theres nobody left, it's just a nice change of pace to slow it down.

No, Final Fantasy XIII is awesome. Also, if you're going to call your thread a poll at least add in some voting options...

While I haven't played even a fraction of the game yet. Thirteen is the only game in the series (With the exception of eleven) not to grab me in the first few minutes. I've heard it gets better around the 4 hour mark but my initial impressions were not good. I wouldn't say I'm blinded my nostalgia either. I'm one of the upopular few that lists ten as their favourite (although I've just realised that final fantasy 10 is now a fucking decade old. Jesus) and thirteen plays a lot like ten apparently. But something about it seems... off.
Actually, FFX won the Famitsu for greatest roleplaying game of all time and many claim it is one of the best games on the PS2. Myself? I rank it second on my favorite games of all time, losing only to Lunar Silver Star Story Complete. Just about to conclude my ninth file and may begin my tenth within the month.

Anyhow while people are entitling to their own opinion, a large majority of those who dislike FFXIII or claim the series is doomed found FFXII the pinnacle of the franchise and evidently FFXIII would be an immense disappointment. Much akin to its predecessor, FFXIII went too an extreme which would inevitably split the fanbase. Those who fancy the open ended exploration and focus upon gameplay will loathe this game undoubtedly while who coveted storyline and character development are likely to be pleased by the dedication. My personal opinion is Square may have pressed the preverbal line in regards to linearity. I am not particularly bothered nor do I find linearity a flawed mechanic however the inability to change your party or level at your leisure is off putting.

I understand the lack of NPC interaction given Lightning and co are essentially criminals to be killed on sight. It would be illogical to initiate a casual chat with the locales under those circumstances. A solid mini-game and a few non story-esque missions, akin to say the Mass Effect 2 loyalty missions (using an example here), would have gone a long way to delude gamers away from complete linearity.

Clearly my pessimistic view of FFXIII is ill-founded as sources close to home suggest otherwise.

Bingo! Couldn't have said it better. Can't we all just like this one? I mean it has been in development since the stone age and the results of that are very well present. Put down your haterade and just have fun with it

Bah, people make threads like this about every new FF game that comes out.

"Too many... They're not "Final" if they keep making them! Blah blah blah"

No, FFXIII wasn't a let down. No they won't stop with this one.

As for the question of linearity that is on everyone's lips: Go play FFX and tell me it's not just as linear...
I would concur with your analysis, it was just as linear. But this should have served as a learning point for to avoid such problems in the future, not as a element for repetition in future titles .

Except FFX is lauded quite widely as one of the best FF games ever - not to mention one of the highest selling. It is a learning point, but not quite in the way you mean.

FFXIII is probably going to go down in FF history as the most divisive game in the franchise (possibly dethroning VIII for that particular honor), but I don't think it's a sign that the series is past its prime.

It's the plight of the modern game developer. Deviate too much from what's established, and you're strung up for "forgetting the roots of the series". Stick to the old ways, and you're crucified for "refusing to innovate". There's simply no way to please everyone, especially in an age when news travels fast and the loud and stupid are given soapboxes to stand on.

For what it's worth, I think FFXIII is a great addition to the series. There's a lot of talk about linearity, but come the fuck on, people. Be honest. If you've really played the old Final Fantasy games, you know what towns were really for: Inns and shops. Oh, sure, you might chat with the inhabitants once or twice the first time you arrive, but after that, it's strictly business. The games essentially boil down to a simple cycle: Grind, Inn/Shop, Grind, Inn/Shop, Grind, Dungeon, Boss, repeat. All FFXIII has done is boil that down into one smooth, streamlined process. They've done us a favor.
I've got to say, that's, in essence, what I was going to say, just put more eloquently.

Also, I love your avatar.

Heh...snow Rayne.

At this point calling "Final Fantasy" a series is really kind of a joke. The games are mostly unrelated save for a common sense of aesthetics and a few carry-overs, like chocobos and tonberries. The game mechanics are different from game to game, as are the stories. Sure, okay, there is a little overlap, esp. with the Ivalace chronicles but, generally speaking, the only thing they have in common is the name. And the name is mostly for marketing.

Finally someone speaks the truth. FFXIII wasn't bad, it just wasn't like the older games. People need to quit whining and start trying to enjoy it, at least. The story was good, a bit confusing though, and the characters were good enough, except for ***** kid. Then there's all the massive hate for Vanille. She's annoying as hell, but come on! She's sure as hell isn't the most annoying character I've seen... No Wakka still has that spot... Bah, I just can't understand all those stupid complaints.

Final Fantasy VII saw its day around the time that X came out. That was the only FF title that I ever gave up on and the only contemporary title I've played since.

You mad?

As for the topic:
Yes I freaking hope. Obviously I know that it will never happen because any FF game released might as well be titled "Donation to the Square Enix Retirement Fund" but I really want to see the series die simply for the disturbing trend it has had in the JRPG market. This is not intended as a troll post and if the mods ban me for this it proves they don't enjoy the concept of free speech however, FF is one of the main reasons that many JRPGs nowadays feel the need for ridiculous angsty characters and inconsistent overstuffed settings based on the sales of the FF genre following FFVII. I mean if you look back at old SNES JRPGs like Chrono Trigger and Lufia follow a more traditional approach with normal looking characters along with a sensible setting where a lot of modern JRPGs feel the need for spiky hair, rediculous weapons and settings that generally clash with themselves.

FF13 is pretty awesome and Im currently still playing through it. The only fault I have with the game is the eidolons being transformers.
