As a gamer, I was pretty much raised by Half-Life. The original Half-Life was one of the first shooters I ever played, and also one of the first I played from start to finish. I loved the hell out of it, and I was overjoyed when Half-Life 2 came out. I enjoyed every second of it, and I wasn't alone: it received nothing but praise from the press and earned many Game of the Year awards. Everyone loved it, and it was in many people's opinions, one of the greatest games ever made.
So why does everyone who plays it nowadays hates it?
Maybe it's just me, but over the past few months I've noticed a trend on the Escapist. I've seen thread...

...saying pretty much the same thing. Someone new to Half-Life plays it, doesn't see anything special about it, asks people what they see in it, and flame wars follow. Normally I'd dismiss it as people hating on it just because it's popular, like Halo, but I noticed that everyone who says this is a newcomer to Half-Life. Coincidence?
Half-Life is pretty much the quintessential old school FPS. There are health and shield bars, a plethora of weapons you can carry all at once, boss monsters that take a ton of punishment, linear corridors, and no ironsights or cover systems to speak of. Despite everything the Half-Life games did to revitalize the shooter genre, few modern games resemble it.
Do newer gamers, raised on games like Call of Duty and Gears of War, have different expectations than older gamers? I can see how someone used to the huge battles of Call of Duty or the nonlinearity of Crysis could get bored by Half-Life's linear corridors. Plus, so many of the things the Half-Life games revolutionized, like story telling through the environment and realistic physics, are commonplace now. And what?s the last game you remember that actually broke up the action with puzzles and exploration instead of nonstop combat? I've always loved the Half-Life games, and I enjoy playing them even today. But I'm not blind to what people might dislike about it.
Is Half-Life's award winning gameplay becoming dated? Have modern gamers become spoiled by today's games? Or do people just hate it because it's popular?
Note: I?m not saying Half-Life is smarter or better than CoD, Gears, or whatever. I'm just suggesting people have different expectations.
TL;DR: People who played Half-Life when it came out loved it. People who play it now hate it. WTF?
