The quality and intelligence brought to the forums are what we, the users, bring to them. I haven't been on here particularly long, so I'm hardly qualified to address the subject of how much the community has changed, but I personally have found this site to be a remarkably sane and intelligent one for the duration of my time here. True, you get some threads or posters who don't do a great deal to further any deep intellectual debate, or even the sense of fun and enjoyment, but there are a lot of intelligent and open-minded people on these forums, and I love reading many of the discussions that go on. It's not perfect (nothing is, or ever should be), but it's still pretty damn good, in my most humble opinion.

On another note, perhaps one reason that a lot of intelligent discussion is slowing down may relate to the fact that people are always called out for threads that have been made before. I understand this practice, and it is certainly justified, but at the same time, you have to wonder how many times the average person is likely to come up with a completely original discussion point that nobody has yet addressed. I mean, realistically speaking, it's likely that the average person doesn't have as much as a single thought that hasn't already occurred to somebody else in the sands of history (or that the few original ones are either ill-informed or not very discussion-worthy). A repost of a thread that has already happened before does have the benefit of revitalizing a conversation that had wound down simply by virtue of the fact that newer discussions had smothered it, and pushed them out of the view of other users. I'm not really advocating a 'don't check the search bar policy,' since that would be chaos, and indeed cause the site to become little more than repetitive nonsense, rather I'm pointing out one reason why well reasoned and intelligent debates are becoming a rarer beast - simply because there are fewer to have.

No, I'm just saying that older users will have been around back in 2009, when there were search bar pirates around every corner.
I sure remember that. God forbid you post a news item someone posted twelve minutes before you on the forums.

Still, it did help curb the repeat thread madness so I didn't entirely disapprove. If the thread was done within the last ten days... I don't see why we need to swarm the forums :/

Oh yeah, it's changed.

It's changed from a fun loving community to a serious, "no fun allowed" one.
Has it? Hmmm, I suggest we start a two man war for the cause of fun!

Maritime Dubstep! Sounds f'ing AWESOME!

Still. You WILL take that sea bass, and you WILL love it. After I have finished I will go get the Herring!

(Also on the topic of the sea, anyone seen the trailer for the new Aardman pirates movie? It looks awesome!)

I call for an anchovy takeover! Not of this thread, but of the WORLD!

New users arrive. Old users leave or get banned. So apart from some old users who stay the course, your can't expect a team to be the same with a different set of players.

Also this tread pops up once or twice every year because it's basically a minority of people every year sitting on their front porches shouting "GET OFF MY LAWN!" and cocking their shotguns.

Case in point; Escapist Redesign. When every third person was saying "Change it back!" or "Give me the option to change it back!"

You can't stay in your comfort zone forever so just roll with the new kids like it's 1999

It has changed! The forum topic trends of this year confirm it! People weren't this open before. Almost... un-natural. >.>

I'm too tired to actually add anything to his discussion so I'll just say that I find it ironic that the OP is complaining about people who complain.

Yes, they have changed even in the time that i've been here. I've basically stopped posting because i'm tired of being 'warned' for low volume posts (which were not 'low volume' at all) or calling someone out for being a fucktard... /sigh

While I certainly miss many of the old posters(some of whom seem to have come out of their shells for this thread), I don't think it has changed all that much.

Any problem see now, you can point to the same/similar problem at any point in time.

And hey, as long as Redlin and Frappe are here, The Escapist will still be great.

Good god, I have not heard somebody say that in ages. I miss that. :(

OT: Eh, maybe. The Escapist does not seem to be as interesting to me anymore, but I could just be looking at the past with those wonderful, rose-tinted beer nostalgia goggles, so it is hard to tell. I do miss many of the older users who got banned/left (Damnit SwollenGoat! Why did you have to leave me!).

I haven't been doing my new member speech thing for awhile. I need to find it, copy it and make it common again.

Yeah, it's changed. A lot since I first signed up.. hell, I used to post more than once a week and was a really active user. But over the past year, I feel the community has gone so far down hill, I just don't like posting here any more. I think some of the stricter guidelines have dictated the nature of the change. There aren't many people I'd like to get to know as much as I did back in 08/09.. I made good friends then, and we're still in touch, through Twitter, Facebook and meet ups. But now.. not many people stand out to me.
Maybe it hasn't changed and I've become bored of this place, either way, I know I don't feel as enthusiastic about The Escpaist as I did a year or two ago.
