I literally just posted this in another thread.

I would say its actually pretty accurate. I mean, a douchebag is a douchebag, but a hater is a hater. in fact alot of the times they're one in the same.

I'm more annoyed by the variation, "Haters make me famous."

It's basically the most **** thing someone can say when they've convinced themselves any attention is good attention. All criticism, no matter how valid, is suddenly drowned out by an infantile defense employed seriously only by people who lack any desire for introspection. At that moment, it's not even worth talking to the person. Let alone continuing anything resembling a real relationship on any level.

I've never heard "haters gonna hate" used in a 100% serious context so I have no idea what you are getting upset about.

Well, I guess when it's used in the context of a reasoned argument, it's a stupid thing to say. But "haters gonna hate" is actually a really great attitude to have towards life in general. No matter how fun, or innocent, or pure something is, there will always be people who hate it for no other reason than because they can. These people are commonly known as assholes.

"Haters gonna hate" demonstrates an acceptance of that fact, and a willingness to get over it.

I often find that the people that use it in a serious way are also the same people that you can't hold an intelligent conversation with because of how stupid they are.

When it's used in a funny way though, who cares.

It's apt sometimes. Like when people hate something because of some self-indulgent religious faux-ideologies. Like fanboys and such.

But I hate when someone uses it as a copout to disregard a perfectly good argument.

Here are resons it does not work [http://thebusystreet.com/2011/01/12/dont-like-it-dont-watch-it/]

But, yes, "Haters gonna hate" is a close second
Or, you know, don't seek out things you don't like.

I dislike a section of Christianity that hates homosexuals and condemns them to eternal suffering. Know how to solve that problem? I don't talk to them.

Amazing!

Pretty much this. I didn't even know people were silly enough to really use it in an argument. I just use it when, say, a friend of mine is laughing at me for watching My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Hater's gonna hate man. Funniest thing about is that through his hate I've converted a ton of his friends into bronies.

I reckon it's infuriating to hear when someone uses it to defend themselves though. Doesn't make a stupid comment or something any less stupid.

given that 99% of the time it's really obviously a joke I think you're getting a bit too upset about this

And yes, that and U mad bro, make me want to punch someone.
Indeed, though I must say it'd take a particularly broken-minded individual to hate a panda riding a horsey like so.

I kind of agree and kind of disagree at the same time, I definitely try to avoid people like that but it isn't always so easy to simply ignore them.

That works, to an extent. But the main point is that saying "Don't like, don't watch" can just as easily be applied to anything and everything. Including what I say. If I watch a youtube video that is stupid, I am justified in saying "This is awful for reasons x, y, and z". However, if I keep going back there, for the sole purpose of complaining, then there is something wrong.

In theory, there is nothing wrong with it. However, it is used ad nauseum as a deffense to anything negative said. It is abbused to stifle any critique

But this is all besides the point.

Except that didn't actually solve anything but your own personal problem.

BUT I DIGRESS!

I must confess I'm not terribly up on what the hell's going on with LeBron James.

But with that said, "haters gonna hate" seems to me to be perfectly valid at times. A LOT of people love to hate on things if only because of the popularity or success of that thing or person. Sometimes you just have to brush it off, not worry about it, and remind yourself (and everyone) that it's all a bunch of envy or resentment or sour grapes for no good reason. Sometimes it's valid to fall back on this, sometimes it's not. Obviously it's not in any way a proper argument.

AGAIN no idea what James has done or said this time.

I use that argument against the arrogant, self-absorbed tools.

"Halo 4 suks caus halo has no stry and is lam and ful of kids lawl"

Oh, well, you're a tool. Haters gonna hate.

But against someone that makes a well formed argument and tries to be civil, I'll actually give them my time.

I basically use it as a way of dismissing trolls. "This dude is a hater. He won't see reason and won't pay attention and will do nothing but spout the same shit over and over. Haters gonna hate. This is pointless." But never otherwise.

Actually I've come up with an amazing defense for trolls. I've used it in WoW when I played (stopped almost 2 months ago).
Basically I tell them to eat coal. Because eating alot of coal will kill you, but trolls need to feed. So going against don't throw fuel on the fire I actually did. "Here troll eat this coal", "Eat coal troll" ect. I've actually been able to annoy about 2 dozen trolls off trade chat by annoying them, to go eat coal. Sounds stupid but it seemed to work.

And this is anti-trolling. Not regular trolling. Lets get that straight.

Agreed. So long as it's fairly apparent that the person doing the "hating" has little good reason to but continues anyway in a troll-like manner then it's quite legitimate to refer to the haters gona hate meme.

"Haters gonna hate" isn't meant to be a defence, it's just shorthand for "There will inevitably be someone who dislikes you and/or the things you like, so don't waste time to deal with all of them on an individual basis". Or at least, that's what I mean when I use it.

I think there are times when the phrase is okay.
Like when people run onto a Halo thread just to lash out about how much they hate it, this can of course extend to any game, movie, book, band, character or TV show of course.
What I mean is, the mindset of 'haters gonna hate' as a way to dismiss people trying to troll and to not get angry yourself at their attempts at trolling is something that I think is very fair.

That said, when people use 'haters gonna hate' as their only response when people are criticizing something THEY are doing... especially if said something is directly OFFENSIVE to people, then they can't just use it as a way to dismiss all arguments.
It, along with 'take a joke' are piss weak justfications given by obnoxious jerks, who rather then actually defend their position, instead choose to just ignore or dimiss any notion of an argument. Hence digging their grave even deeper.

If it's used AGAINST egotistical jerks, I approve. If it's done as a way to defend egotistical jerks, then I have issues with it.
