My one friend went on a tangent for 5 minutes last time I talked with him about people saying "Good morning" to him and how it makes him angry. Got himself all wound up just talking about it. Man takes peoples opinions to seriously lol.

In my case, when i walk around smiling people seem more likely to avoid me. Which is perfect, no-one trying to ruin my day.

Thank God no.
"Smile more", how fucking stupid is that? I'll smile when I'm happy. I'm not a robot that displays emotion on command.
My neutral face is slightly smiley so it might have something to do with this though.

Not often, but it happens. I'm a scowly looking dude. Can't help it. Doesn't mean I'm angry or sad, more likely concentrating or thinking about something. Funnily enough, the responses in this thread are making me smile. All you introverted (possibly slightly misanthropic) types, you remind me of me!

I've had people tell that to me more than I'd care to admit, and it gets really annoying after awhile.

I suppose it's because I look either grumpy or mad about something when I'm just doing nothing. It's even worse when I have my arms crossed. I've even had ask me why I'm grumpy about something when I'm not, and that's when I'm told I should, "stop doing that".

Whatever that means.

I've had "cheer up", smile, it might never happen" and "pretty girls shouldn't frown" or some variation of that.
Maybe my resting face just makes me look like a miserable fuck, I don't know.

I think it's rude and it really annoys me when it happens so I tend to just completely ignore the person.
I think pretty girls look prettier when they frown.

OT: Male here and yes I get told to "cheer up" or "smile" sometimes. My natural facial expression is a frown and most people say I look angry or depressed and angry naturally.

I love tripping those people up when I say "I am smiling" or "This is me happy".
Their reaction to that makes me genuinely smile every time :D

Though, i never get this thing said to me.
Probably because I look like i will bite the person's throat if he even DARES to ask me this. Seriously.

Never by strangers but family/coworkers/acquaintances have told me to "cheer up", "Why are you sad?", "Is something wrong?". They mean well I suppose but it's annoying to know that apparently my normal just doing nothing face looks depressed. Also, when I'm concentrating I look really angry and unapproachable apparently. /shrug

Yes, along with various other comments about my appearance, usually to do with my hair and getting it cut(I have long, well kept blonde hair) by chavs and other undesirables who in comparison look like street urchins or hobos, which really is the kicker. Either that or it's about my various piercings, from people who don't like piercings, those are fun ones "Why have you got -insert area- pierced? It looks so -insert unintentional insult-." Maybe it's a British thing?

I do live down the road from a pub though, so I have to walk past drunken idiots who stumble out of it from time to time, and they tend to be the ones making comments, though not always, but at least that can be forgiven.

As for people telling me to "cheer up", yeah I get that from time to time too. I'm one of those people that always tend to look 110% pissed off, even when I'm having the best day ever, mostly when I'm out and about, because I hate the general public, so having to deal with them even in passing makes me annoyed.
