I've never been depressed ... emotionally destroyed on the other hand? once or twice. But the biggest thing to remember, and having a logical mind helps, is that you know life has no purpose other than the one you give it (unless you are religious, in which case God loves you, yahweh is happy with your moral system and allah ... ok allah and yahweh I'm pulling out of my arse I have no knowledge of either religion) ... back to the point, you have to simply change the purpose of your life, whatever is making you depressed just look at it in a negative light (therefore making it less important) and give yourself a new goal which is independant of whatever you lost/whatever is bringing you down.

Alternatively, find somewhere private, bring a speaker system, and play your favourite songs at full volume while singing as loudly as you can in whichever way feels best. The key point to both, is that you must throw all of yourself into the task.

EDIT:
Alternative 2; and this is my favourite; consider something you consider more important than what is depressing, for me this is high level physics theory and just seeing if I can think of alternatives, OR, if there is something I try to undersand I try and re-word it in my head 'til it makes more sense (BTW, I realise I will not find alternative physics theorem but it is interesting to try). Another thing to think about is meditation, go somewhere quiet, play calming music (or anythign which helps clear your head), then just do some thinking about either yourself or anything ethical or philosophical, after all, nothing is better for taking your mind off something than something which demands all your attention.

Alternative 3: If you are a creative person, either choreograph a dance to go with your favourite songs, paint something which either matches your current vibe, or is in complete opposition to it, or write a novel, or practice an instrument.

Nope, I've had fits of self-pity and a smattering of times that I was full of self-loathing, but I can't say I was depressed. I was more of being a spoiled little brat who thought he didn't have it good enough, saw what everyone else had and wanted that, all while throwing pout-faced temper tantrums.

No, I'm not saying that's what anyone who'se depressed is doing, it's just what I was doing and I realized it and fixed it by changing my attitude. I looked at my life, did a chart of the good and the bad, and upon finding out that the good outweighed the bad by a huge margin I decided I was going to enjoy my life.

Then again I've always been really consequence driven so I haven't had much major stuff go wrong in my life as I try to think things through before I make a decision one way or the other. Hell, the one major time that I didn't think things through and went off someone else's decision for myself, it turned into a royal trainwreck, even then, I wasn't depressed. Irritated, sad, hurt and jaded, but not depressed.

You will never get un-depressed. Believe me. Everything is too non-intuitive and terrible, and the world's all fucked up and you can change nothing.

I get un-depressed by kickin' ass. (quake, etc)

Uhhhh... hope you have a different view on life now! You have us right? =)

Anyway, if ur depressed i think one of the best things to do would be saying to yourself : "life is great" and go create something... Like paint a picture, create some music or simply buy a guitar and strum a little :). I heard exercise works too.

Just look up to the sky and say "I am fine". Yell it if you like.

clinically depressed here. what helps is playing games like animal crossing and harvest moon, where you can have a successful life without dealing with the real world.

it also helps to lack the motivation to kill yourself. too much effort.

Yes I have been, my solution was to go a tad bit nutters until my own behavior amused me enough that I eventually was entertained long enough to get over it I guess. My hair has been every color and god awful style I've ever seen and thought that it was either cool, funny, or probably impossible to pull off so I had to try; lots of piercings, a few tats (which are thankfully tasteful and pretty) and a teeny (or not so teeny) bit of time missing once or twice a week from various parties and things or times I just flat out embarrassed myself into amnesia hehe. Waking up in the mornings (or afternoons, or nights...), looking in the mirror and laughing at the results was just the thing to cheer me up. Of course you can't take yourself too seriously or this will have the opposite effect.

Yes, been so for as long as I can remember. Alternates between an overall feeling of cannot be arsed, and feeling rather suicidal. I seem to be able to forget all that if I find something to occupy myself, but most things don't interest me that much anymore, video games especially.

What the fuck? 136 people?!

I'm sorry but people must be misunderstanding what depressed actually means.

Just as people mistaken infatuation for love. Look at the post above yours. Depressed because a video game is taking too long to come out. Huh? Depressed because there's no new video games for x amount of time. ... ... ... I'm getting depressed (HA!) reading why most of these people are depressed. Drama and feeling bored/sad =/= depression.

Easiest way is to keep yourself occupied.

Know that an internet guy whose opinion likely means nothing to you approves of your final decision, no reason to throw your life away.

Or it may be that the majority of gamers who would post on this thread are likely to be slightly less socially active meaning they have more time to think about things. The fact that they're posting on a forum alone means they've got time to spare and think. After all, depression doesn't have to be a 'mental sickness' for it to hit hard. This isn't a reflection on everyone, obviously. (for example the guy you mentioned seemed just bored rather than depressed)

Once more I wave my solitary manic depression flag.

Only advice? Do stuff, preferably that involves other people, to keep your mind away from thinking. Thinking makes it worse.
