I watched a Let's Play once. I laughed. I said the game couldn't possibly be as frustrating as the guy made it sound.
It's cool, I told myself. I'm laid-back. I won't be reduced to unintelligible squawking like the LPer.

The game was I Wanna Be The Guy.

I'll let you fill in the blanks.

Yep, many times. Mostly with Jim Sterling. Last one was Undertale. I just needed to hear the music and it was enough.
Weirdly enough, he convinced me not to buy the game.

But he's sold me on games before. Not always for good games, mind....
Aww, you're cruel.

He didn't do anything really exciting, but I'm glad he didn't because there were some surprises at the start that I found very effective.

Yeah I always look up some LP footage when a game is released I'm interested in. One of those games is Mad Max that got some pretty mediocre reviews but the LP I've seen of the game looked pretty cool. Kind of forgot about it(was released around the same time as MGS5) but when I saw it on sale recently I decided to try it. Haven't regretted it as this is a really fun and well-polished game(looks really nice as well). Massively underrated if you ask me. The game takes a lot of elements from the Ubisoft school of design philosophy but most of this stuff is optional and with the car combat having such a central focus in the game this is also where the similarities end. The on-foot 'Arkham' style combat is also really good and probably the best implementation of this type of combat besides the Arkham games themselves. It feels slower and weightier but definitely well suited to the type of game this is(they made a lot of subtle changes that gives the combat a different flow that is more appropriate to Mad Max). I think the developers did a fantastic job with the license. Look up some LPs and don't let the mediocre reviews fool you. :p

I'm glad someone else mentioned this. People easily dismiss this game due to the reviews, but professional critics aren't the average gamer, they are always looking for some new innovation to write about, it is of course their job. But turning an enjoyable hobby into a full time job is not going to happen without side effects. So there are virtues they miss when they seek only original story and innovative game mechanics. That freerunning zombie dead island non-sequel that i currently forget the name of suffers the same fate. I still enjoy Mad Max now, they did a great job of making a seemingly boring environment (a desert, or dried out sea bed) into a surprisingly interesting land to explore. Plus the vehicle combat is probably the most visceral and satisfying of any game i've played so far. Now i only hope they keep that engine (lol) for a proper vigilante 8 remake. Fingers crossed! Even talking about this now has driven me (lolol) to start the game up today! Good stuffz, jolly sir! One...tiny slightly niggly complaint though; why is there no bloody handbrake?? It is utter madness not to have one! Even rocket league has a fckin handbrake!! Annyway...

Let's play? No, never I do not watch lets play videos.
Gameplay videos in general, yes.

What's the significant difference in those two terms for you?

I've bought quite a few games from Let's Plays, to be honest.

Off the top of my head, games I bought because of Let's Plays were...

X-COM: UFO Defense
X-COM: Terror from the Deep
Pathologic
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
FTL: Faster than Light
Lisa: The Painful RPG
Galak-Z

I know there's a substantial amount of games I can't think of. But LPs have been the deciding factor to me buying games more than a few times. They're a great resource for selling games, imo.

I only use lets plays for cheating puzzles and watching alternative endings/scenarios. I don't watch beginning to end.

I have bought games because of totalbiscuit or extra creditz before but that was the commentary.

I got Sunless Sea after TotalBiscuit's Best of 2015 . It seemed interesting so I watched a Lets Play and it seemed like my type of game, so I got it during the Winter Sale.

No, I don't generally watch Let's Plays, though I have found them useful on occasions when the game's own instructions were woefully inadequate or I was being thick (specifically Kerbal and Elite).
Let me guess, Scott Manly? Yeah, his videos were very informative for both of those titles.

Yeah I think so. Thanks to Game Grumps I know that when I have someone to play it with I'm going to get Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime. Vinesauce's Vinny is making me strongly consider Darkest Dungeon as well. Markeplier made me get The Escapists. I'm probably missing a couple.

For this I don't count one-time-showcase shows like what TotalBiscuit and Jim Sterling do. I got a ton of games when I saw them play it.

It's mostly the commentary over it. When I watch GameGrumps I barely even watch it, I listen to their antics. It's mostly an in-the-background thing.

Not speaking for him but it's obvious isn't it?
Let's Plays have people wittering on about pointless shit over them, gameplay videos are just videos of the game with no talking.

Yeah, same here. I mostly watch Many A True Nerd, because he's just really damn funny, with his dry British wit. And his new dialogue for what the characters are doing and why is very humorous. I used to watch Geek Remix when they were doing Life is Strange, after seeing Mari's reaction to the end of Episode 2, but I don't watch those anymore. I recently found the joy that is Jesse Cox, and find great amusement and watching him flail his way through games, freaking out as he does so. Him playing Farcry: Blood Dragon was beyond hilarious.

Occasionally I have. I owe it to Alchestbreach for showing me my two favorite indie games on steam, FTL and Unturned.

LPs are how I found about about Persona. I was super bored, flipping though Twitch, and stopped on a streamer I kind of knew playing a game with an amazing art style and awesome music. I found out it was Persona 4, its Japaneese AF, the writing is on point, and its almost as good as Suikoden II.

Nope. I have zero interest in Let's Play. I've never understood the appeal of watching people play video games but if people like to do that, who am I to judge? I ran my own little XCOM Let's Play here so I suppose I'm talking out of both sides here but watching people play just bores me.
How to explain the appeal of LPs...

The good ones come in three varieties in my experience. They're like a cross between sitting down to game with your funny friend and watching a comedy show (ex: Two Best Friends),your watching someone with top tier skills do things you could only dream of pulling off (EX: Marbozir), or a combination of both (ex: Maximillion_dood, Shofu).

They, like sports (or pretty much anything else in the world) aren't for everyone but that's the appeal of it for those who like it.

The first game that came to mind was: Hyper Princess Pitch
The second game that came to mind was: Peggle
Then, I thought about all of the games I've bought because of X-Play's "Top 10 Video Games on *insert Console System here*"... :p
Finally, another game that came to mind was Rogue Legacy, but somehow forgot about it until the 2015 Winter Steam Sale...

Other than that, it's usually word-of-mouth/text that would sometimes do the deed for me, per se... unless you're Pony Island...
*flips table due to lack of leisure-based funds to buy said game already*
