Most of the time I carry a knife, wear a heavy belt buckle and have on hand some sort of aerosol.

When I can't have that, I make sure to have something like a drink in a glass bottle, a blunt object, hot cup of coffee or a backpack to make space between myself and a potential attacker. Sometimes I'll even light a cigarette even though I don't smoke.

I live in and frequent dangerous parts, and have been hassled and almost assaulted on a few occasions.

You're more likely to have it turned on you than you'll ever need it
This is a movie myth, don't believe it.

Just opening a butterfly knife fast will scare the shit out of most people. It shows that you know how to handle the weapon. In a direct confrontation a display of confidence and capability can go a long way towards talking your would be attacker down.

As for actually stabbing someone? From behind with a stiletto, you'd never even know I was there.
Must be nice living in your world. Your goal isn't to get into fights, it's to get out of them WITHOUT having to draw your weapon. If you pull your weapon, you've just changed everything, both legally and mentally. Just flipping a butterfly knife around isn't going to scare someone who's really after your life. Not to mention that when you're in a stressful situation that could lead to a fight, do you reaaaaally think your nerves are going to be the same as when you're just chilling at home and flipping your butterfly about? Five bucks says you flub your fancy little display and potentially drop your knife. Now what?

Butterfly knives are good for one thing, just dicking around with at home so you can impress your friends for laughs. If you really want to carry a folder, get a switch blade or if it's illegal in your area, a non-assisted opening folder built for tactical carry.

Secondly, coming up from behind with a stilletto? What the shit? Turn in your sharp point objects mate, cause you don't have the right mindset to be carrying anything for self defense. This isn't a game, this is real life. You aren't shanking anybody because that's fucking murder. You go to jail for that you know.

I'd dread the consequences if I'd actually seriously injured somebody.
As you should.

Intelligent citizens that carry weapons for self-defense (and I mean just intelligent weapon carriers, not that the only intelligent people are the ones that carry a weapon. In fact, some people should just stay far, far way from them. ANYWAY) are never hoping to get into a fight. I don't want to EVER be put in that situation. No one does..well...not sane people at least. Hell, here in Alaska, I don't even want to be put in a situation where I'm just using my gun to scare off or potentially kill a pissed off animal (see: bear/wolf/etc.). People who carry don't have a disrespect for life and don't want to use violence to solve any problem. We're just interested in protecting the safety of ourselves and those we care about.

I stand at six feet tall, have arms like pythons filled with rocks and look like I could stop a moving truck. I only need my fists to fight people off.

That said I have a US army issue Bayonet and a Katana in my house for good measure.

This can not be! You must be in possession of at least one firearm!
If you wish I will send you my spare Saiga.
It's okay. I'm still saving up for a pimped out panzer tank

if nobody carries a weapon then the worst your going to get is a fist fight, if everyone has a gun...you're pretty much fucked. At least thats how everyone in my area sees it, (yes even the little wannabe thugs that smoke crack at the bus stop).

To me, feeling safe isn't whether or not i have a bigger gun than the other guy but in the fact that if i do get mobbed the worst im going to get is a kick or a punch; not that its likely to get mobbed around my home/school its a pretty good neighborhood.

EDIT: Also the risk of getting caught would put my career in jeopardy.

Most of the posts on this thread disturb me.

Well, thats America for you I guess.

As for me, no I don't. I merrily bare my fangs and hiss.

I carry my bowie knife with me if I plan on walking home at night. It's saved my ass 4 times already, and never had to kill with it. Today's 'gangsters' suddenly turn into complete pansies when you pull even a knife on them.

My motto: if you're in a fair fight, you didn't prepare well enough.

Criminals don't follow laws, so I can't expect some legislature or police force to be able to keep me safe. I'd rather be judged by 12 than be carried by 6.
So, American? yes?

I like you... friend request.

I always have at least two firearms, a machete and three knives with me at all times.
So, American? Yes?

You wonder why you guys have the highest gun crime ratio eh?

Anyway, for me, I used to carry a blade when I thought it made me cool. Here in Canada it's, cept maybe in Toronto or is organized crime related, always fisticuffs. Thank god.

Haha. Sounds like a few guys are BSing. It's funny but this topic sounds more serious.

I have taken Chinese Kenpo for 7 years, I've never really carried a weapon nor had a need to.

Haha, that's hilarious, no one carries around that much weaponry in America XD

I assumed he was talking about the middle east or gun-fight-topia, where all people that post on the internet about being "from the hood" are.

I never go out enough to need any heh.

Anyway, crime round here in Lincoln (England) is pretty low. If I moved to the states I probably would.

I feel sorry for everyone who feels the need to carry weapons around. Either having such a dangerous life would suck, being paranoid would suck, or being a (concealed) psychopath would suck. If you think its cool or whatever, you are a psychopath in my humble opinion. I have never carried around a weapon. I may have consciously put a cigarette lighter in my fist once in a while, but I carry those around anyway and not for that reason.

Violence solves nothing. Except in games.
It't not that our lives are dangerous or we are paranoid but that we looked at the options and decided the option to defend ourselves(though lethal force) is a good thing. Is having a fire extinguisher or first aid kit in your car/boat/motorcycle due to paranoia? After all chances are very slim you will ever need them. Likewise with firearms yeah there is only a one in 1000 chance I'd ever have to use it this year but I want that option. Rather than being at the mercies of a theif/mugger/etc.

That line"violence solves nothing" is fine and dandy sounding but tell that to the couple that was carjacked raped and killed in my town.

Yeah the capacity for violence sure wouldn't of helped them. Thank God he(chris) didn't have a gun otherwise who knows what the criminals might have done.

The USA is not as dangerous as you guys seem to think it is. Totally serious, the USA is one of the safest places on Earth, I dunno what you guys are talking about.

There haven't been many situations in which I've felt ill-at-ease enough to warrant weapons, but I've done so, because you never know for sure. You don't want to know what I will carry or what I'll do with it.

When I get home I'll post a link of a study I did on US gun crime. Basics are:

You can't treat the US as a homogenous nation.
Gun murder is dominated by Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis and D.C., all have effective bans on all weapons
The most dangerous places have low gun ownership rates
Gun murder nearly exclusively in narcotics crime

If America legalized drugs, our muder rate would be lower than Western Europe.
