Let me explain, I got Slender the arrival not because of what it had but because I had fun with the free game. I was fine with the eight pages but after playing it for 20 hours I decided to show my appreciation by getting the second game. And after seeing all the half life 2 free mod turn into full games is anyone else just getting a game because the free one was really good?

"Bulletstorm"

I thought the game looked kind of neat from the screenshots but looked far more arcadey than my liking.

It is very arcadey...but it was also hella fun! Whipping people around, shooting them in their fun zone, explosions and gunfire!, it's like Michael Bay created a video game with John Woo producing!

Now that I think of it, the same thing happened with "Just Cause 2"

If you're a Triple A title, you do not really need a demo for me to consider you (since I will generally know if I'm interested or not). However, if you're a double A title, a demo can be what separates you from the plays and the play-nots.

Kerbal Space Academy. I excepted lots of dead kerbals, I got an actual launch/orbital sim.

Unreal Tournament

The demo was two levels, and one of them... I think the name was Morpheus? Anyway a trio of skyscrapers in a low gravity environment, allowing you to jump between them so long as you were careful. Must have played that demo a hundred times over and even after I bought the full game I still wasn't sick of that map.

Good times.

Recettear. Demo was very funny, big and representative of a game.

Another example would be XCOM:Enemy unknown.

Yeah, I always prefer a game to have a demo than not have one, a demo will really encourage me to a buy a game I am not sure about. For example, I'm curious about Dragons Crown (dubious art style aside) but I'm not willing to spend £30 on a game I know nothing about. On the other side of the coin, I love the game Puppeteer, a game I knew nothing about and had no interest in before I played the demo.

Demo's can also be misleading though, I brought Brutal Legend based on the demo of it being a crazy hack 'n' slash/car driving game. The rest of the game however was very disappointing. But again, I hated the Batman: Arkham Asylum demo, that really put me off the game. The only reason I picked it up is because it got fantastic reviews from everyone, so I took a chance and ended up loving it.

Oh yeah. A lot. I can't even remember them all.

Reccetear, Dragon's Dogma, Torchlight II, Orcs Must Die! 2, Civilization V, Titan Quest Kingdoms of Amalur.

I'm a huge proponent of demo's and quite honestly, simply can't find any downsides to them. Every developer should strive for one of they can, genre permitting. (A demo of Skyrim/The Witcher would be...difficult.)

Erm...Am i the only one (no you're never) old enough to remember the demo discs of PC gamer and the like?

I remember getting Dark colony, Baldurs gate, Dungeon keeper 2, Heroes of might and magic II&III

And a bunch of jazzy likes who had swingin' demos.

But lately? I guess Mass effect and Dragon Age the first.

Burnout (or whichever Burnout demo was on the PS2 demo CD at the time)

Remember those PS2 demo CDs that sometimes came with the PlayStation magazine?[footnote]Note that I never had those kind of magazines, myself, but I do remember my cousins getting them for a "few" years to the point that they have about 20 to 30+ of those PS2 demo CDs that they still keep to this day... So... Yeah...[/footnote] They got me hooked onto the Burnout series in general and I've never looked backed on it or regretted my decision... to get Burnout 3: Takedown and Burnout: Dominator... (Not Burnout 2, though... I think that was the demo in question...)

Now... I rarely play demos... I believe the last actual demo I've played was for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time... since I missed out on the God of War: Ascension miltiplayer beta at the time...

Heaps, and I don't buy into that 'demos aren't worth making' bullshit for a second.

Interstate '76 was probably the biggest example. I played that demo to death , and even though I only ever played one of the two levels, it was enough for me to grab the game, and I don't regret it at all.

Just about every game I own.

Heck, first rule I have for when I'm considering buying a game is "No Demo/Free Weekend/Trial = No Purchase" (sequels are exempt from this for the most part), and it's a rule I only rarely stray from.

Yeah, that's DM-Morpheus you're thinking of

I will nearly always get a demo if I can before I buy. its the best way to tell if I am going to be wasting money and time sinking hours in, or whether the gameplay is slick enough and the graphics pretty enough that I will enjoy every second of it!

I'll be honest not much, most of the time I just get demos for 15 minutes to 1 hour of fun, but recently I've been replaying Wrecked revenge revisited over and over and over. I'm probably going to buy it now.

Recettear has a demo where you can play the first week, if I remember correctly.
I played it, loved it, and even got to keep my save from the demo.
By now, it's one of my most played games on steam.

A few times, yes. I remember trying out the Jedi Outcast demo that was included with my copy of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. I soon realized that I was playing the free demo more than the full game I bought, so I decided to get my hands on the full version. I'm sure glad I did. So many good memories. I still fire up Jedi Outcast from time to time and mess around with custom single player maps.

In more recent years, I tried out the demo for Space Marine. I was pretty optimistic about the game to begin with, but I wanted to check it out just in case.

Holy balls. As a Warhammer 40k fan, it was like a dream come true. Relic absolutely nailed what a Space Marine is capable of. I was sold after slaughtering my first wave of Orks.

It used to be the norm, PSUnderground put out magazines with demo discs in them. I used to get them all the time, then if I liked a game I would get it when it came out.
