After reading the article on the profitability of Free-to-Play MMOs, I started to wonder: how many of you have spent money on these things?

Personally, I have spent some money, but not much ($10 so far on Dungeon Fighter Online).

So, have you spent money on Free-to-Play MMOs, and what's your opinion on such purchases?

I guess you could say that. LOTRO is technically a F2P MMO these days, but I've bought a few months of play time for my sisters account to help her getting started. Also bought the upcoming expansion for the both of us.

Think in total I've spent around 100 euros on it since it went F2P.

Yep I've spent some money on LOTRO to buy Turbine Points for some quest packs and Mines of Moria as well as a couple of other things such as shared storage.

I payed for one month of runescape before finding wow, about the time TBC came out. My greatest shame.

No, but I have spent money on the now free-to-play Team Fortress 2. So I'd be a hypocrit if I said anything bad about it. My opinion, if you enjoy the game, feel free to support it as much as you like (and can afford.)

I think NEStalgia is the only Free To Play MMO that I've decided to throw money at to support. It helps to genuinely like a game and I feel a lot better giving cash to an indie developer who is still trying to find its way in the world than someone like Blizzard who will enjoy my dollar but the sale won't have any impact what with being a very small drop in a very large bucket.

Mind you, I have nothing against Blizzard. I've been playing MMOs of all sorts since 1999 and have no issue with the subscription model or the "Free To Play" model. But a lot of companies seem to do the "Free To Play" model really badly. And I think NEStalgia did a good job having their paid accounts offer cool things but still have a really solid experience that doesn't restrict content to free account holders.

It's a lot nicer than the "You can't access that area because you don't give us money." bits in Age of Conan.

I had a runescape subscription years ago. Microtransactions like buying mounts and stuff seems pointless to me.

I used to play a game called Tibia a LONG time ago, I paid for premium content a for a couple months a couple of times (probably around the $50-$60 area) the game was addicting because there was no level cap and if you died you could loose weeks worth of level and skill training.

This in itself was what made me fall in love with the game, you quickly discover who the big players on each server are (hint: they are usually the highest level characters) and how they relate to each other, a guild war was something that carried a huge impact on the server. The politics and relationships between players were important if you didn't want to lose days if not weeks of training over a silly feud.

I also liked how the game wouldn't have level specific monsters for each zone. you could be bashing your way through skeletons in a cave, but make one wrong turn and you'll be roasted by a dragon you are no where near prepared to fight. I have never felt terror in a video game like the terror I felt when my chips were down and I was running from my life to save weeks of skill training.

No, never.

If a F2P MMO of sufficient quality and more features then just levelling, raiding and grouping comes out I probably will.

I paid for a month of Champions Online to open up the character creation. The game didn't hold my interest long enough for me to pay more.

Not an MMO no, I paid the one time fee for Dragon Fable and Adventure Quest respectively, but I wouldn't call those MMOs.

Depends on the game. Currently in the middle of World of Tanks, haven't paid for it but may do just to give myself a boost.

When I used to play Runescape I spent money to become a member a whatnot. Don't know how much exactly, probably somewhere between 11 and 25 dollars.

I've sadly payed about £60 on clothing for Maple Story, I feel so ashamed thinking about it now.
