Aye, I've met a friend from Birmingham which I knew through WoW. Was a great holiday, the week he spent here.

I've met a few MySpace friends in real life, but they were friends of a friends so I don't know if that counts. I've also done book and gift exchanges with online friends.

About 4 years ago, I met a guy at a track meet and after a little bit of talking I found out we had met before online. Completely coincidence, but still cool.

You being 17 and him being 20 doesn't sound that bad. Thing is though, did you know that before hand, or find out when you met up? (I'm actually asking, not being condesending)
Yeah i knew how old he was (his exact birthday even), what school he went to, even his myspace and msn (hence picture). We'd been friends for about a year on Xbox Live so I kinda knew a bit about him and figured it would be safe.
That sounds all right then.

Hmm, I wonder if friend is the correct term?
Camerahead totally doesn't count. She's just a figment of your imagination. HA!

For myself, I've met one [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.80224] or two [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.108007] off of Escapist and several from another site I'm a part of. Wish I could meet some more to be honest. Awesome people.
She's got you there, Purps.

As for meeting people, is anyone up for ESCAPISM SOUTH-WESTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA '09!? Yeah! Woo! No? Okay... I'm just lonely is all... I've kind of come to trust people from the internet, so the idea of meeting nearly anyone intrigues me. It probably helps that I just love meeting new people, and them being nerds is a large plus.

I've met up with plenty of people from livejournal, and always had it turn out really well. I've met a lot of friends that way. And actually, I've got a friend from America flying out on the 9th of May to come and stay with me! I'm really excited about that.

And I know she's a real person and not a creeper, because one of my friends stayed with her when she went over to America a year ago. So that's good too.

Don't listen to her Larry! It's a lie! She's trying to divide us!

I've met a few people, one of whom is now one of my best friends. The others ended up being somewhat creepy, unfortunately. I don't think there's anything wrong with meeting people as long as the person is careful about it.

I went to Escapism Sydney and had a great time with the people present there. Meeting up with people you've met on the internet is a double edged sword, it can be great or terrible, its really a hit or miss sort of thing to be perfectly honest.

Well, really you've got to use common sense.

If a "17 year old girl" asks you to send "pics" across your Xbox Live, chances are there a 60 year old Pedo.

If someone who now and again talks to you, doesn't bug you and never asks to meet up in the first place... chances are they're cool. But you gotta' read between the lines.
Really I don't think thats a fair assumption and an over used stereotype for the internet in general. Like take xbox live for example, not the easiest thing to say you're a 17 year old girl when you a 40 year old man, because nobody takes seriously the guy without a mic. So many people (parents usually) are paranoid about the internet and Myspace and Facebook and how there are pedophiles and evil people on there. Ok this is true to an extent, but most people are actually who they say they are and these days sorry but 90% of the people who succumb to a pedophile online or cyber bullying are either clinically depressed or retarded.

Sorry but it's true, hell I am clinically depressed and I've never tried to kill myself over something some fuckwit on facebook or xbl said to me...
Btw. I don't believe cyber bullying is actually anything real to be concerned about, has nobody ever heard of Delete? Block? or the age old, reply with your own abusive message?

I had been talking to a girl for 7 years on another community website. In the fall of 2007 we decided to meet up, and she travelled to me and stayed for a week in December. Sometime in the middle/end of that week, we became a couple, and have now been together for almost 1½ years. In July we're moving in together.

People on the internet are not scary monsters. Chances are they're just like you - since you also probably met them somewhere that's a nexus of sorts for people with your interests. There might be a few creepers on dating sites, sure, but on forums, in games and such there's no real risk. No more of a risk than meeting someone in a bar or club in real life, anyway. There are always a few maniacs that go out of their way to snag victims, but it's like that in real life as well, it's nothing that happens exclusively on the internet. Skip the paranoid safety precautions, it's only going to make things awkward between you and the person you meet. If you know and trust someone enough to meet up with them, then there should be no suspicion that they might be killer/rapists anyway. Letting people know where you're going and bringing a cellphone is enough, really, but that's something you should always do regardless of where you're going.

Also, I kinda crush on a girl I know online, whom I haven't gotten to meet in person yet, but hopefully I'll get to in not too long : D
Awesome. Good luck with that, and I hope things turn out as well for you as they did for me!

I have a couple of online friends who I've met in real life. I joined a clan on Unreal Tournament 2004, which consisted only out of French people by then. I went to Dijon for a lan-party, and since then some them have enjoyed a lan-party at my place. I consider them very good friends now, and I was glad my parents let me go to some complete strangers in the middle of France when I was only seventeen.
