I'm not seeing these popups and I'm actively TRYING to after reading this thread. I see all the normal banner ads and whatnot that I routinely see but I'm not getting anything obnoxious like popups and/or ads with sound. The only thing I can think of is that Chrome might have some form of protection that you can't turn off. Where are you fellas getting these ads? Do they popup when you click on a thread in the forums or on videos or articles or what? I'm kind of curious because I have The Escapist on my list o' domains that AdBlock is disabled for and I'm not a premium member.

I haven't seen them. And I'm not in the Pub Club. And said club should not be nudging us in threads like these. It's flipping irritating.

There's a paid alternative... I appreciate you have to pay, but for such a quality site, I'd expect no less.

and I don't use any kind of plugins whatsoever (last time I did, my browser went full batshit, so never again)

Yep, I gotta say I really hate them. The first few I saw, I was like "oh, that looks cool", but frankly when it opens up every few minutes, it's really tiresome to keep turning them off.

They're incredibly intrusive and I honestly don't see the point, you've got two vertical lines on the side for adds and plenty of space below and above. And what do you use those for? Advertising your own shows. /facepalm is all I can say to that >.>

What popups? I don't see any popups. Are you sure you aren't imagining them?
You haven't gotten any Mass Effect/Dragon Age/Dead Space adds popping up on your screen? If so, guessing your browser's blocking them or something.

And this is why marketing and advertisement is a flawed concept to justify things on.

Its like how when people bring up topics on pirating tv shows and the retort is "The producers are loosing out on revenue because your not viewing the advertisements"

Well spending that kind of money and effort doesnt work if the people your marketing to are invariably going to ignore and disregard your advertisement.

So I am confused how so many people can promote advertisement and correspondingly so many people can condemn it (I am not implying its the same people for both, but statistically there would have to be at least 1)

If it were left up to me, I would make all forms of advertisement illegal because its based on deception, it typically doesnt work, Its only there to dupe the gullible and really nothing good ever comes out of it.. But thats just me.

I joined the pub club to support this site. I never really had any problems with ads before that though. I do think that ads that appear before you watch a video especially if you cant mute it are annoying, but other than that I never got any pop-ups even before pub club. Maybe it is a computer setting or something.

I am beyond sick of them, and I refuse to join the Pub Club. And they even slow down my almost brand new computer they're so large and pointless.

I don't see why the old adverts didn't work, and also, why are you advertising Mass Effect 2 constantly? That game is long released.

Adverts like this make me really annoyed because as someone who wants to work in the field of marketing I hate it when they're so obvious. Repetition like this only makes real idiots want to buy the product, because anyone with a brain will see the same image several dozen times, and it will make them so annoyed that they don't want to buy the product. Constant repetition of adverts like this achieves the exact opposite of what advertising should do.

Pro-tip, when the consumer associates the product image with being annoyed and frustrated, you're doing it wrong.
Unfortunately one of the main issues we have with advertising is finding a variety of (or at times, any) advertisers to buy ad space on our site. :( "Filler" type ads like what Google ads offer tend to pay so little (only a few hundred or low thousands a month) as to not be worth the annoyance, which is why we didn't run them for more then a few test months. I don't think people realize that we have turned off ads in the past like those because they did cause more annoyance then they were worth.

The Gaikai game streaming stuff actually pays us fairly decently for time spent playing any of the game demos, or so I've been told. We're also the first site of any size that they are trying it on, and they're tweaking it to various degrees still. I'm sorry it chugs your computer though, I'll bring it up and see if there's an opt out option somewhere tomorrow.

I quite enjoy the demos.
Sure, they can get irritating, but it's only a click for them to go.
In fact, I bought Dragon Age: Origins because I heard it was nothing like Dragon Age II.

The marketing is just incredible.

thats what adblocker plugins are for.
Or, you know, discussing it like a reasonable person instead of shitting on the rug in one of the few ways we explicitly ask you not to.

Only times I get it is when I mouse over one of the ads by accident. Other times I will occasionally get an ad blocking my profile so I can't get to messages which is annoying though.

I don't exactly feel the need to scream and pull my hair about it though. Chill dude
